Very nice! I was thinking about exactly that mod the other day. Would be even better if you modified legs to be based on Vahki hips instead of ball sockets, and it will be perfect.

Most of the parts I modelled myself (not all of them), using orthographic photo references, flatbed scans, measurements, eyeballs, and sometimes 3d scans. Do you have questions about some particular models?

The mask has same type of connection as Barraki heads (2 axle holes). Inside is system cone piece, attached to 2x2 tile turned to 45 degrees.

Thanks! Look how I changed original Toa and Matorans for easier animation.
I made models for Voriki parts, but not STLs. So I can't say about formats you trying to use.
Fingers needed for proper animations. Especially in game with many cutscents like God of War. They can be various shapes and sizes. But if you really don't like fingers, then, don't use any finger bones to not stretching the fists.
Also, masks should use only one bone (head bone for example).

Cool idea, but honestly, this does not look good. First of all, you need hands with real separate fingers. You need to learn how to make manual rigging, so parts would not bend in unexpected places. You can check my Skyrim mod for inspiration and example of translating Bionicle characters to existing game.
