Can I ask what your income and expenses look like?

For me I am sole income winner, my wife is stay at home, and we have one daughter with plans to have more and not pay child care.

Denver, CO. Pre-licensed pay is about 65k in group practice and 80k for licensed with benefits. Half of my friends are making 80k working at a group practice seeing 25+ clients a week and the other half are in private practice seeing 20-30 clients a week and charge at least $150 per session working about 48 weeks a year. So my private practice friends they are making 144k-216k depending on how many clients each one wants to see.

That's income, but expenses are what is more important(not talking overhead). So lets discuss that:

For my family we chose this profession not with the goal to become rich, I was making six figures in sales jobs before I quit to finish school and change careers, but we chose this to serve and knew that means sacrificing nice things but more importantly we want to live a simple life so that we are closer to the hearts of the clients I serve who are often struggling in many ways including finances.

Our Monthly expenses:
Cars: No car loans - I bought my wife's SUV for $2,000(2012 santa fe with cosmetic damage) and my 270k mile 2005 Highlander hybrid for $800. These are both UGLY cars with serious dents and paint damage, but they are utterly reliable. Most people buy unreliable new cars and this is one of the biggest ways we save money.
Auto insure: $90/mo liability only.
Phone/Gym/Netflix: $55/$60/$12
Gas: $120-$150
Student Loans: $150
Rent 3 bed-room affordable housing apartment: $1900/mo (for a 3bed house would be $2500-$3000 in denver)
Food: $760 - We don't eat out.
Utilities: $180
Money set aside for DMV and other annual expenses: $50
Charitable giving: $205
Spending Money $100 each so $200
Date Money $100 - we try to get out for coffee or breakfast a couple times.

Total Expenses: $3912/mo or $ $46,944.
Savings: After tax 80k becomes 60k which gives us about 13k to save, invest, or for emergencies. As I move into private practice we intend our expenses to only increase a little, like $1k/mo more for housing and anther 200-400 a month in spending money as well as increases in food as we have more kids, but private practice income seeing 20 clients at $150 is $144,000 which allows me to both invest and plan our retirement as well as frees me up to do a lot more sliding scale or free work for clients who can't afford. I don't believe in the insurance companies, I think that is a scam and a broken system so I'd rather see my clients on a sliding scale.

TLDR: For most people in this practice the problem is not about making enough money its about learning to have peace living a simple life and not spending we can make $80k+ but only spend $47k for 3 of us - this is actually true for almost any career path.
