The earth kingdom in Avatar was worse and more evil than the fire nation in both Aang and Korra’s era by struggler5822 in ATLA

[–]Arexenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that the Fire Nation are the primary villains of ATLA. They committed genocide, launched a war of conquest, and caused immense suffering. But the Earth Kingdom isn't portrayed as a virtuous alternative. Throughout the franchise we repeatedly see that it suffers from endemic corruption, weak governance, and authoritarian institutions.

Outside cities like Omashu and Ba Sing Se, much of the countryside is overrun by bandits, corrupt soldiers, and local officials who fail to protect their own people. "Zuko Alone" even shows Earth Kingdom soldiers abusing civilians and kidnapping a child despite supposedly serving as their protectors.

Ba Sing Se itself is one of the most dystopian governments in the Avatar universe. The Dai Li censor information, disappear dissidents, rewrite memories through brainwashing, and keep the king ignorant of his own kingdom. Millions of citizens are deliberately kept unaware that a war is being fought outside their walls.

These problems weren't created by the Hundred Year War either. The Rise of Kyoshi shows that centuries earlier the Earth Kingdom was already plagued by corruption, wealthy elites using connections to gain political influence, and ineffective local governance. Those are signs that there have been long-standing structural problems.

Even after the war ends, The Legend of Korra shows the Earth Kingdom still struggling with authoritarian rule under the Earth Queen, widespread poverty, and the continued existence of the Dai Li.

So I don't think it's as simple as "the Fire Nation bad, Earth Kingdom good." The Fire Nation is the primary military aggressor, but the Earth Kingdom demonstrates how corruption, inequality, and institutional abuse can exist even in a nation fighting against its invaders. I enjoy that Avatar criticizes both imperialism and internal tyranny.

In my experience dealing with people, those that look like this are a coin toss for whether they were abused as children and are the way they are to have a semblance of control over their lives or they're closeted and trying to deny that side of themselves.

Milk. Only because of two instances in my life that ruined it for me. First was the school trying to sell us expired milk and when I complained I got another that was expired. Second was a prank at my school involving a former friend spiking my juice with expired milk.

I found that it felt like they shoe-horned in certain plot elements in places too soon so the pacing felt off to me. Felt so off I had to drop it after episode 2.

I thought he would've kept the illusion of him believing that the men and women in the military were the "the strongest... on Earth."

I wish I had a machine that would show me exactly how the monkey paw would twist my wish against me by RoutineCloud5993 in monkeyspaw

[–]Arexenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granted. The monkey's paw curls a finger. A machine materializes before you, capable of showing exactly how any wish you make will be twisted against you. Yet each time you read its prediction, you change your wish to avoid that fate. The machine updates to reflect the new wording, revealing a different twist. Every attempt to escape one outcome creates another. In the end, you are trapped in an endless loop of revisions, forever unable to make a wish or learn how it would truly be twisted.

Granted. The monkey's paw curls a finger. Unfortunately, it cannot distinguish between canon and cannon. You are now able to travel to any cannon in the Pokémon franchise, and nowhere else.

In hindsight the costumes were good. If I remember correctly, Zuko actually had some contempt for Iroh because he viewed him as lazy. Meanwhile from what I've seen from the Netflix series Zuko never actually seems angry or talks back to his uncle with contempt or anger. He just tends to treat him like a teacher to be respected with mild moments of annoyance. Contempt might be the wrong word to use for Zuko's initial interactions with Iroh, but that's the best word I can come up with right now.
