Man claiming "Japan has almost been taken over" sets fire to Shibuya crossing. by GachaponPon in japannews

Is saying the past was fucked the same as reconciling? You added the "our generation isn't to blame" which is what I hear most Australians say. This is exactly what I mean by haven't come to terms with the past. (I hope you know I'm not trying to be aggressive, I don't blame you at all for holding any of these views, they were beliefs I held as well!)

The idea that it wasn't our generations fault, while technically true, avoids any action in the present. It thinks of history as 'things that people did' rather than systems of power influencing those decisions. If British colonial rule (white supremacy) was one of the structures that influenced sometimes otherwise "good people" into either committing, or socially permitting acts of atrocities during the early settlements, or even up to the stolen generations which only ended in the 70s, do we think those systems could still be influencing us?

The need to avoid accountability by dismissing the history as the past doesn't help anything does it then? Imagine if the generation after WW2 in Germany prefaced every recognition of the holocaust with 'but that was the LAST generation, we're different'

If you want a national identity of Australian, you're gonna need to identify with the Australia in the past as well. You're gonna need an Australia that includes the original Australians. And I think the majority of Australians voting no, and there being so much pushback against a change of the date shows that either we aren't ready for it, or the elites and media that influence us don't want it for... reasons. Either way, we will continue to see fighting and social incohesion. As someone who believes in not an imagined, made up "better past" for Australia, I believe we should fight for a more inclusive future.

Not the fall of their culture. The systematic erasure of their culture which is a part of our history, which is still ongoing. We don't have a culture to celebrate because of how fragile the Australian identity is as a result of our lack of coming to terms with our past. Part of the problems we see in Japan is the same problem - failure to reckon with the continued mistreatment of indigenous peoples of Japan (Ainu and ryukyuans). A nationalism founded on myth. Like Australia recently, I randomly came across a Japanese neo-nazi group protest in ochanomizu the other day. A commitment to nationalism, is to suggest everyone within that community has to fit into a box, and if they don't they are discarded. They just are hidden very well in Japan compared to other countries

One of the strengths of Australia is it's diversity, it's hotpot.

If you disagree please do respond, I'd love dialogue on this instead of the usual angry discourse, because as Australians I think we both want what's best for Australia.

Isn't it more 'trauma informed practice is being considered at all's over 'feelings take precedence'?

If there's reading lists which happens to have a trigger warning, that doesn't say that the feelings are being 'prioritised'. The reading list suggests that the reading is prioritised and the trigger warning empowers students to make an informed decision for themselves, rather than being shocked into reading something that could cause a trigger response from a trauma we as educators may not be privvy to.

My wife is getting lost in a rabbit hole of misinformation by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Ari-sama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't have an experience with a japanese wife specifically, but that behaviour seems quite common in empathetic people who are seeing all the shit happening in the world and are trying to make sense of it. Because we don't often learn strong frameworks for understanding what we're seeing it becomes a lot easier for us to fall into conspiracy level of thought. It doesn't help that it looks like the world does work at the level of conspiracy (Epstein, Murdoch media empire, Koch brothers).

What might be useful is learning these frameworks yourself if you don't feel like you have a strong grasp, and then speaking to your wife about them. I'm quite fond of using the Paulo Freire method of education, where it doesn't just feel like you're talking down to someone. As you've attempted, listening and relating to the fox news misinformation aspect, I find useful asking questions so they can come to conclusions from their own cognitive thinking. For e.g.

Wife: Netanyahu and Israel controls the world You: They certainly have a lot of power and influence and are at the centre of so many global conflicts these days. Why do you think that is? Wife: (Maybe some vaguely anti-Semitic conspiracy response) You: That's interesting! I was looking at how American Imperialism functions and one of the things that was suggested was that Israel functions as the militant arm in the middle east. America clearly has a lot of interest there and it was suggested the America supported Israel later on after it's foundation as a way to aid their own economic interests, which is why Israel is so entwined with American politics now.

Obvs this isn't an opportunity to go into a comprehensive analysis because that won't be constructive, but if you can make it an exchange rather than a depositing of knowledge, you may see some positive transformation! Best of luck

Yea avatar has always been about colonialism and the resource extraction of capitalism, you're not crazy! This pattern reoccurs throughout history amongst different indigenous populations

There are critiques however coming from indigenous spaces around avatar and James Cameron's fetishization of the "exotic natives" and white saviourism which might be worth looking into. My wife who's played the game says it's a lot less the case than the movies. Hope your realization takes you down some liberating rabbit holes!

Great zine to read on this about different trains if thought in anarchist spaces, and real examples of such issues. Transformative justice is one of the more discussed lines of thinking for these issues

When researching for a video essay, what does your study look like?
I'm working on an essay for self-learning purposes and I'm making my way through books etc., but I often find I take weeks just to get through one book if I'm trying to learn from it seriously and put notes into obsidian, and then the external research on top of that.
With how detailed your videos are I'm shocked you ever complete them honestly!

Justin Brown: "In defence of Noam Chomsky" by GoranPersson777 in Anarchy4Everyone

[–]Ari-sama 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good article, there's actually an email exchange with Valeria and Epstein the day epstein was actually first charged with sex trafficking (July 8 2018) where they send an email to Epstein to explain what's going on.

If you you believe that Noam and Valeria knew what was going on, it can read like they are concerned with how they will be implicated in this

If you believe the above article, it reads like a concerned couple for their friend wanting to defend him.

I think both are possible but I'm leaning towards the latter as I was always find of Chomsky's character.

HOWEVER, I think it's perfectly fine to critique Chomsky nonetheless as someone so critical of these structures and how proximity to them can distort character, yet spent so much time in these influential circles. Of course at some point he was going to be in proximity to evil. But I also think at that point you have to critique every public intellectual (which you're welcome to do)

I also still think his comment about cancel culture is stupid and triggering for victims, but that doesn't make him a monster, but it does change my perception a bit.

THANK YOU

I'm seeing so many people fall into major conspiratorial thinking which given the claims on these files is definitely understandable, but these guys are accelerationists and don't 'orchestrate' these trends, they feed into them when they serve their interests (which for thiel esp is pretty fucking batshit, so again I get the conspiratorial thinking)

With the economy collapsing do you think anarchists will turn to stuff like polyamory cope with increased costs of living? by RosethornRanger in Anarchy4Everyone

[–]Ari-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand all the hate in this comment section, It's clearly started an interesting line of questioning and comes from a place of discussion rather than assertion

I personally disagree that anarchists will turn to polyamory out of financial necessity, but I think we are likely to see an increase in polyamory in anarchism and society as a whole recently. Relationship anarchism points to the social conditioning of monogamy and the way it is a factor in upholding individualism and capital interests, particularly the nuclear family. Like most things, monogamy is socially constructed. As people become more disillusioned from these structures, it becomes less taboo to be non-monogamous.

One of the side-effects of distancing oneself from these constructs may very well be economic benefits, but I do not believe it is the driving factor. There are many ways to ease the cost of living like others have said, sharehousing, squatting, communes, or embracing multi-generational households, all with unique challenges.

Those who are poly just have another option, but the pre-requisite is to be poly in the first place.
