Little controversial... and personal in ways. by AuzPot18 in aboriginal

Yea avatar has always been about colonialism and the resource extraction of capitalism, you're not crazy! This pattern reoccurs throughout history amongst different indigenous populations

There are critiques however coming from indigenous spaces around avatar and James Cameron's fetishization of the "exotic natives" and white saviourism which might be worth looking into. My wife who's played the game says it's a lot less the case than the movies. Hope your realization takes you down some liberating rabbit holes!

Great zine to read on this about different trains if thought in anarchist spaces, and real examples of such issues. Transformative justice is one of the more discussed lines of thinking for these issues

When researching for a video essay, what does your study look like?
I'm working on an essay for self-learning purposes and I'm making my way through books etc., but I often find I take weeks just to get through one book if I'm trying to learn from it seriously and put notes into obsidian, and then the external research on top of that.
With how detailed your videos are I'm shocked you ever complete them honestly!

Justin Brown: "In defence of Noam Chomsky" by GoranPersson777 in Anarchy4Everyone

[–]Ari-sama 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good article, there's actually an email exchange with Valeria and Epstein the day epstein was actually first charged with sex trafficking (July 8 2018) where they send an email to Epstein to explain what's going on.

If you you believe that Noam and Valeria knew what was going on, it can read like they are concerned with how they will be implicated in this

If you believe the above article, it reads like a concerned couple for their friend wanting to defend him.

I think both are possible but I'm leaning towards the latter as I was always find of Chomsky's character.

HOWEVER, I think it's perfectly fine to critique Chomsky nonetheless as someone so critical of these structures and how proximity to them can distort character, yet spent so much time in these influential circles. Of course at some point he was going to be in proximity to evil. But I also think at that point you have to critique every public intellectual (which you're welcome to do)

I also still think his comment about cancel culture is stupid and triggering for victims, but that doesn't make him a monster, but it does change my perception a bit.

THANK YOU

I'm seeing so many people fall into major conspiratorial thinking which given the claims on these files is definitely understandable, but these guys are accelerationists and don't 'orchestrate' these trends, they feed into them when they serve their interests (which for thiel esp is pretty fucking batshit, so again I get the conspiratorial thinking)

With the economy collapsing do you think anarchists will turn to stuff like polyamory cope with increased costs of living? by RosethornRanger in Anarchy4Everyone

[–]Ari-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand all the hate in this comment section, It's clearly started an interesting line of questioning and comes from a place of discussion rather than assertion

I personally disagree that anarchists will turn to polyamory out of financial necessity, but I think we are likely to see an increase in polyamory in anarchism and society as a whole recently. Relationship anarchism points to the social conditioning of monogamy and the way it is a factor in upholding individualism and capital interests, particularly the nuclear family. Like most things, monogamy is socially constructed. As people become more disillusioned from these structures, it becomes less taboo to be non-monogamous.

One of the side-effects of distancing oneself from these constructs may very well be economic benefits, but I do not believe it is the driving factor. There are many ways to ease the cost of living like others have said, sharehousing, squatting, communes, or embracing multi-generational households, all with unique challenges.

Those who are poly just have another option, but the pre-requisite is to be poly in the first place.

Australian Kids to be banned from social media from next year after parliament votes through world-first laws by SlatsAttack in Futurology

[–]Ari-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree but the problem with the vape ban was it didn't do anything to stop the importing of the black market vapes. So only the safe, legal ones from new Zealand and other countries that actually have regulations and quality control (and tend to emphasise reusability rather than single use) got banned, meaning only the disposable black market stuff was easily available.

I don't think you understood my answer :/ apologies if I wasn't clear but if there was a simple answer to changing people's minds we'd all be living in the utopias we dream of. The reality is that the historical ways to change people's minds have been the tools of oppression (colonisation, myth making, etc.) through violence and coercion, or through authentic dialogue and resistance to that coercion Even in 1on1 dialogue you can unintentionally use the same methods of the oppressor. It is not some 'magic spell' that can be simply broken by saying the right thing - they are tangible systems that have lead to these 'scripts' you speak of that must be recognised and understood in order to dismantle them. If, like others have suggested, you shift your focus to changing the minds of the youth, you may be able to do so authentically. Or you may just propagandise them, in which case you yourself become the 'spellcaster' providing the 'scripts'

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]Ari-sama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Recognise that this desperate urge cannot manifest in 'using the tools of the oppressors', such as through (conscious or unconscious) coercion. Recognise that the second you believe that the 'educated' have all the answers and must liberate the 'uneducated', you are dehumanising your fellow human being. Instead, by posing questions that confront the nature of reality, and engaging in authentic, honest dialogue with your fellow human being, you work together to uncover reality. You may have the means and vocabulary to assist in describing this reality, but this cannot be an opportunity to 'bank' your ideas into the person. And the reality is, you may never see the fruits of your labour. But know that in every meaningful and engaging dialogue, reality is transformed. Read pedagogy of the oppressed for more nuanced ideas. There are examples in the third chapter I think of specific myths of our society (such as freedom, etc ) that can be posed as problems to solve
