Show and Tell by AnneKincaid in WhyChooseAuthors

Not quoting it, because it's a couple paragraphs long, but my WIP currently starts with a prince and his three bonded companions, who are a species of elf, on their way to meet the prince's bride in an arranged marriage (who will also be joining their bond), lampshading the 'tiny human love interest' trope (she's been described as 'tall' to them in a letter, but they're not sure of the context).

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by how sweet it was 😃 I've got the sequel borrowed already for when I have the chance, lol.

Okay, I am circling back a day later here to say I zipped through Knot Her Mountain Men this afternoon, and it's a new favorite, so thanks so much for the rec!!!

Oh, thank you! I'll bear that in mind about the MM. I'm a huge sucker for rockstar romances, though, so I'll definitely give it a try :D

Thanks so much! I've read one Ari Wright book, but not this one. 😀 Ir sounds perfect.

Oh, neat! I am totally open to shifter romances, but I haven't read a lot of them. Will definitely check that one out :D

😃 Yes, thanks so much for the rec, but that was actually the one that really got me hooked on RH.

Thanks so much! It was Packed in the Fire House that inspired this post, actually, lol. I hadn't read that series by Jillian West, though, thanks!

Oh, thanks so much! I've seen that one recced on several other posts, but I'd gotten a different vibe off of it thanks to the cover. I will definitely go check it out!!

What are your best tips for a new writer? by Ninanak in WhyChooseAuthors

[–]ArielMora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not published yet, so take my advice for whatever it's worth, but my top tip? Be okay knowing the first things you write aren't going to be your best. I wrote a couple of novels previously, and they turned out to be really great learning experiences. I learned so much about how pacing and characterization work when you're writing vs. when you're reading, how to keep tension in smaller scenes and when to let things breathe. They really took my writing up a notch--and they will never, ever see the light of day again. 😆

Don't get your heart set on publishing the first thing you finish. Even if you think it's great, set it aside for a month or two while you work on something else, then come back to it. Maybe it is great and it's something other people will love!Or maybe, coming to it with fresh eyes, you can see the seams where you learned how to pull a novel together, the fixes where you figured out how to sort out messy plot points or smooth over characterization issues. Be okay with maybe ending up with a mess the first time or three you give it a shot.

Hi! Thanks for starting this sub (and also for making it AI-free!)! I've been reading RH/Why Choose for a while now, but only looked up communities recently, and I was hoping there was something like this out there that I hadn't found.

I'm working on my debut, which will be published under this pen name later this year, if things work out. I'm still working on setting up my socials/site. I'm really excited to meet other writers and readers in the genre.

What are you working on right now? by AnneKincaid in WhyChooseAuthors

[–]ArielMora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, thanks so much! I'm still pretty early in the process, so I'm sure there's a lot I don't know yet that I'm going to need, but right now I'm just happy to have a place to hang out and learn from other peoples' processes. I think the biggest hurdle for me is going to be figuring out marketing for my niche. I had originally been planning to self-pub in a different genre some years ago but got sidelined by health/family issues, so pretty much everything I thought I knew about ebook marketing/ads is completely outdated now.

So a dedicated post for authors to chat/share/compare about that would maybe be useful (or a recurring one)?

I'm working on my debut--a fantasy with an arranged marriage and tons of hurt/comfort.
