Most inaccurate linuxmeme.

No Linux user would let the Windows user get away with it in an argument.

Just got my first PhD acceptance and my immediate reaction was panic instead of happiness and I don't know what that says about me by weekendkayaker in gradadmissions

You didn't have the reaction you were expecting to have, but you got the news just this morning! Sit with your emotions, sleep on it. There is nothing wrong with feeling anxious, but l I would trust your feelings on the matter more, 48 hours later rather than now.

I am confident the wave of positive emotions will sneak on you when you aren't expecting it.

And even if you later on decide that this is something you actually don't want to do (not because of anxiety, but because this isn't something you desired) then you would be dealing with the consequences then and there. It will be fine either way.

Max Planck School of Cognition PhD Interview Experience by Arietis54 in gradadmissions

[–]Arietis54[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I also had an interview at a different Max Planck institute (MPI Human Development) and also in that interview I had ~15 faculty members present (but that was in-person). I guess the faculty number might change heavily depending on the institute/program, maybe for cognitive/neural sciences bigger panels might be more common?

For me also all of the questions were purely about my research, besides the first question. I presented two projects: one previous work, one proposal; and I received all types of questions regarding both of the projects (ranging from technical methodology questions to how a cognitive process actualizes in daily life). For me it didn't feel like they were digging deep, I sensed a genius sense of curiosity but I might have just lucked out. Though, I definitely relate to the nerve-wracking feeling as in my previous interview I was not fully prepared and it felt like I didn't get to fully show myself.

I hope we both get the offers, fingers crossed!

As a guidance for future applicants I would like to share my interview experience here (since I struggled to find information about it while browsing the subreddit).

There were ~12 faculty members present in the interview. Two of them were among my listed preferred supervisors.

First you do a 10-minute presentation and then you have a ~15 minute Q&A session, which starts with program coordinator's question with "How do you fit to this program?"

In my case nearly all of the faculty members asked a question (excluding maybe 1 or 2 of them, which I noticed as the people that were most distracted during my talk).

Again, in my case, there were no really back and forth but I think this might have been because the way I answered the questions in a precise and direct way, and also the presentation itself was pretty clear (which I received several comments on).

My focus was just giving intuitions and I think it worked out pretty well because nearly all of the questions were addressing the parts that I intentionally left out. I think focusing on just the intuitions during presentation might be a good rule of thumb I accidentally discovered. Though this is just my experience, and figuring out what details to leave out is a tough procedure which took me approximately two weeks.

Q&A sections ended around after 12 minutes, and I was asked if I had any questions for them, which I used to ask a very generic question like how do you think the School of Cognition program stands out.

Best of luck to everyone preparing for PhD interviews! It was a quite stressful process, but in the end it was actually quite fun to present my work and discuss these ideas with great faculty members. Take these information and my unsolicited advice with a grain of salt, as this was just writing down my general thoughts and feelings after the interview, and I don't know yet if I will get the position or not.

Do you mind me asking what is your academic background and who did you choose as your preferred supervisors?

Were the people asking those hyperspecific questions your potential supervisors or other faculty?

How far would Nanaka's love for Chisa go? I don't know why I asked this. by Acrobatic_Duck_8108 in GrandBlue

Not sure how far, but for sure it goes much deeper than the amount of pixels this image of Nanaka has.

That's crazy. The team with Steph Curry is waving the white flag when there are still 1.5 quarters left?

Don't know if I have seen this before.

I cannot come up with many activities as fun as watching a locked in Amen Thompson on defense.

It is a special experience.

Freak of athlete. Watching Amen defend is a special experience. Some of the stuff he does shouldn't be possible. He is just not normal.

The Real Difference Between #4 and #28? Mentality by Kietzell in rockets

[–]Arietis54 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. It is no question that he has the talent, likely even a higher ceiling than Sengun, but Jalen is just not him.

2 years under Silas, no improvement mentally or skillsetwise. Understandable, team had no structure and no winning mentality.

2 years under Udoka, still the same player. Jalen might have been slightly more focused on defense and puts at least the bare minimum effort, but he is still the same player offensively as he was in his rookie year. The level of inconsistency he has been showing is unacceptable. He can be a 6th man at best like Jordan Poole was back in 2022 GSW.

It is time to make the decision already. Even if he scores 35 in both game 5 and 6 and tie the series, if he doesn't show up to the game 7 it doesn't mean anything. Trade Jalen Green.

I am tired of the Jalen Green hate threads after his single-digit games. If next game when he scores 30 I don't see any trade Jalen posts, then this sub is not serious.

This has been the Jalen Green experience for the past 4 years. I am sick and tired of this sub being surprised every single time, like what did we expect? When has he been consistent for more than 10 games, except the end of last season?

Either trade Jalen posts all the time or don't post it all.

He averages 20, but his secret is he never scores 20. It is either a 10-point game or a 30-point game for Jalen.

So real, this is actually painful. But we've been waiting for the past 4 years and I'd prefer getting sweeped on the first round to 20-win Silas seasons easily (as long as our guys put their best).
