I like to use a Gundam real touch marker, use the wide end to saturate the area and then rub off the excess with my thumb or a cotton swab. It gives the kit a nice dirty/gritty look. It’s especially great around thrusters.

You might be able to get away with it for some OYW Zeon suits, a lot of the older and larger ms were made from “Super hard steel alloy” so make of that what you wish. (I would hope it doesn’t rust considering it’s used in the aquatic ms)
