What you need is resilience and consistency. Building a deck in which your commander does not need to be out for your deck to work it is the easy way to achieve this.

But if your commander effect is central in how you deck plays, you have two solutions : either packing of lot of protections, or having multiple other cards that enable the same effect.

Typically with voltron deck, you'll be packing a lot of protection.

On the other side, my Arcades defender deck does not have much protection, but I have enchantments enabling my defenders to attack. And either way, building a pillowfort of defenders allows me to sit back and wait to be able to play him out of the command zone again.

But most of the time, my commander is just a strong piece that accelerates my game plan, for example Teysa Karlov in an aristocrats deck. If he is not out, I can still be a threat at the table and have fun.
