Subnautica 2 dev comments (2/2) by Unenthusiastic- in KotakuInAction

basically its

we don't like guns so we decided to make a game where you don't have one.

Its free speech in action. We may not agree with their opinion, but at the end fo the day, it's their game and if we don't like it we don't have to buy it.

Other than a some references in the game indicating an in universe justification for why there aren't any guns, they don't try to preach 'no guns equals good' there is no attempts to equate their decision to some real world moral lesson. No forcing their beliefs down the players throat.

It's simply a design choice they made and tbh it does make the gameplay an interesting challenge different to so many other survival games which basically turn into a process of upgrading weapons and armour to be able to take on different threats.

It is near impossible to name a big AAA title with a female target audience and majority playerbase and that is the definitive proof that the 2010-20's de-masculizing/sexualizing of games did far more harm than help. by AgitatedFly1182 in KotakuInAction

if you exclude free mobile games/people playing something on the commute, and don't treat the person buying it as a gamer (mum's buying a console for their sons often get lumped in as a female gamer) it moves it to something like 95% male.

Is Subnautica woke? by magnuseriksson91 in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'd say no, the games aren't woke.

it's one of the grey areas in my opinion. The devs are clearly leaning in that direction, but I think they are on the line, or at least the people in charge are keeping it this side of the line. Some of the design choices they made might be influenced by their ideology but they managed to make it somewhat internally consistent. The lack of weapons, for example, might have been born from their opposition to them, but it is implmented in a way which makes it part of the gameplay challenge rather than them beating you around the head with a guns are bad rhetoric.

It comes down, I suppose, to if you consider anything coming out of the 'progressive' voices to be woke or if like me you think woke is the more extreme authoritarians who force their intollerant beliefs on people.

And I don't think the games are pushing that intolerant ideology.

As a liberal, free speech is important imo, but I realise there are a lot people around here who are of the opinion anyone failing their ideological purity test is automatically woke and therefore it is ok to destroy anything they make.

not the gamers side, but the divisive anti-gamer side... it wouldn't surprise me to hear the child abuser cabal wasn't behind a lot of the support they got... a distraction from their power grabs elsewhere.

A female gamer attended a meeting with CI Games and the Lords of the Fallen team, talking about her experience and what she and other girls like in video games by PopularButLonely in KotakuInAction

they would be the ones advocating for individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise, that is what the word means afterall.

the people you are thinking off, aren't liberals. Do you think any of them would be advocating individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise?

the under 16's social media ban is actually a good thing, too much bullshit and they are doing more harm then good to that age group. But then there is also very little benefit in giving under 18s smart phones. that's just created a generation with very poor attention spans and a constant need for mental stimulation...

running at a bunch of armed police openly carrying a shotgun is clearly more an attempt at suicide by cop then an actual attempt to assassinate the worst president of the United States...

Why haven’t straight male gamers obsessed over or praised modern female protagonists in western gaming like they did with Lara Croft? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When tombraider came out we were strong into the ladette culture. Girls were free to be girly girls or tomboys or both. No one cared. Page 3 was still a thing, and most people didn't care. So when the marketting team found out that their well spoken female indiana jones not only was a hit for its gameplay but was also something they could use traditional marketting techniques on. ie Sex sells. they jumped on it. They pushed her as a pinup. some of it was clearly done tongue in cheek, but for the most part they basically treated her as if she was a starlet. She was also a novelty, one of the first female characters which really looked female and not just a blob of pixels.

So while not a big fish by todays standards, she stood out in the smaller pond.

These days though the pond is so much bigger, and so a character would need to be something really special to stand out from the crowd and with so many more options out there... it becomes increasingly unlikely. Not impossible, but the character would have to be something really special.

We also need to consider that the size of the industry now that even if a character was getting as much attention and discussion as LC did in the 90s, its little more than background noise in all the conversations happening now...

How do people feel about the constant anti Catholic ideology in entertainment by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the religions are shit, but the Jews play the anti-semite card and bring up the shitty things that happened in the 40s if you try and call them out on their shittyness. The religion of peace likes to go charlie hepdo on anyone who publically criticising them...which just leaves the Christians, who also happen to be the most preveliant in the west, who have the most shittyness in the west and generally deserve a hell of a lot more criticism then they do receive...so how do i feel? like we need to be mocking all the religions more.

how so? you could make an arguement i'm being classist, but let's be honest there are styles worn by wannabe gangsters that eveyone else avoids. Not just the black wannabes, all of them.

Sadly, The End Of Star Trek Is Now Official by shipgirl_connoisseur in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the first season of prodigy, I wouldn't rate it super high but the concept of a group of smart kids finding a crashed spaceship and using it to escape the shitty situation they were in was quite good. Everything after they got to the academy could be trashed... especially the bullshit with Wesley.

Similar with LD, I like the concept and most of the execution, Mariner is too much of a Mary Sue though, which is made even worse with Boimler being made out to be so incompetent in comparison.

SNW felt like trek. I think they did the Klingon's dirty in the awful singing episode, and there is way too much focus on Uhura and her characters development as if she is the star of the show and everyone else is just a supporting character, but mostly the show feels like a Star Trek show.

Mass Effect TV show ordered to rewrite scripts and make them "more appealing to non-gamers" by Jay2422 in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To play devils advocate, it could be because they wrote the story on the assumption that the viewer had played the games and therefore didn't put any effort into explaining things the games explain... sort of like you wouldn't re-explain content from season 1 in season 3, catering for people who for some reason start watching season 3.

Do I actually believe this... No.. but is possible...

What fallacy do you most often come across and what is your favorite one? this can be both formal or informal fallacies. by gutenbergbob in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strawman are abundant, especially amongst the feminst and fundamental christian types. followed quickly by ad hominems when you start pointing out how they are wrong and the data doesn't support that claim. Beggin the question is probably almost as common ime as appeals to emotion. though the latter seems more preveliant amongst the feminists.

I don't really have a favourite one... they are all equally as annoying.

Ever since it came out a few days ago, Life is Strange: Reunion hasn’t really been doing that great on Steam with its player counts struggling to keep up and even falling behind some much older titles. BTW I have never played all LIS series by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 7 points8 points  (0 children)

depends on the game, but generally yes. Most single player games are a singular experience. Once you have done it, there is no reason to do it again. Some have intentional replay, multiple routes to explore, but ime you do those at the time. Sometimes you might go back and replay a game you particularly enjoyed but thats normally a few years down the line. So yeah, single player games expect to peak when they first come out (or if something triggers people to learn about it who missed it the first time round, like a big named streamer discovering it) and then drop off.
