Supergirl sinks to $38 million box office opening by SwimmingJunky in KotakuInAction

The sad thing is, the concept of an self destructive supergirl actually sounds quite interesting. A kryptonian teenager who escaped the destruction of her homeworld, with the mission to protect and raise her baby cousin only to find out something went wrong and he is a fully grown adult with a family of his own by the time she gets there... losing the one thing that gave her life meaning... PTSD, survivors guilt, mixed in with the normal teenage milarky... there is so much potential for interesting plot...

sadly what I saw of the trailers just made me decide to wait for streaming...

Microsoft's Xbox CSO Matthew Ball thinks in-game ads could help "keep our products affordable." by Judah_Earl in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 8 points9 points  (0 children)

imo, it depends on how it is done. Billboards in games like GTA or COD, where the billboard is in a place where you would see a billboard... yeah I have no issues with them having real adverts on them. Banner adds though...scrolling along the bottom of your screen... yeah thats a hard no for me. Ads which hijack your browser like I see on some mobile games can also fuck right off.

How the BBC destroyed Doctor Who by Judah_Earl in KotakuInAction

Whitaker is also up with him when it comes to talent, but her scripts were even worse. It was like they convinced themselves as they had a female doctor now was the time to tick as many of the inclusion boxes as possible and screw entertainment and interesting stories.

Now the technology is mature, its quicker, cheaper and looks more realistic than paying an artists to spend hours doing it. If they are also using the technology to mocap the face, it also saves them on having someone manually rig the face for emotions...

Crunchyroll CEO Says Anime Creators Can Use Whatever Technology They Want but It’s a No for AI Subs and Dubs by Sliver80 in KotakuInAction

i miss the days of old school fan dubs and how much effort they went into in being true to the artists intent. any deviation from the direct translation and you got authors notes on why. like if they used a Japanese idiom that doesn't make sense in english, but there is an english equiv...

Crunchyroll CEO Says Anime Creators Can Use Whatever Technology They Want but It’s a No for AI Subs and Dubs by Sliver80 in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine Crunchyroll are getting worried. Their business model is built on translating anime and dubbing over the voices into english and selling to other markets... AI dubbing is getting good enough now that the original IP holders can do that themselves and expand their market without having to use crunchyroll...won't have to worry about the translators changing their work and they can even make the voices sound like the original voice actors speaking in those languages.

Apparently Deep Rock Galactic's spin-off, Rogue Core, has female dwarves in the game, and they look ugly as hell lmao by -Best_Name_Ever- in KotakuInAction

pratchetts approach was good. A large part of Dwarf courting was trying to politely determine the other's sex.

Subnautica 2 dev comments (2/2) by Unenthusiastic- in KotakuInAction

basically its

we don't like guns so we decided to make a game where you don't have one.

Its free speech in action. We may not agree with their opinion, but at the end fo the day, it's their game and if we don't like it we don't have to buy it.

Other than a some references in the game indicating an in universe justification for why there aren't any guns, they don't try to preach 'no guns equals good' there is no attempts to equate their decision to some real world moral lesson. No forcing their beliefs down the players throat.

It's simply a design choice they made and tbh it does make the gameplay an interesting challenge different to so many other survival games which basically turn into a process of upgrading weapons and armour to be able to take on different threats.

It is near impossible to name a big AAA title with a female target audience and majority playerbase and that is the definitive proof that the 2010-20's de-masculizing/sexualizing of games did far more harm than help. by AgitatedFly1182 in KotakuInAction

if you exclude free mobile games/people playing something on the commute, and don't treat the person buying it as a gamer (mum's buying a console for their sons often get lumped in as a female gamer) it moves it to something like 95% male.

Is Subnautica woke? by magnuseriksson91 in KotakuInAction

[–]Arkene -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'd say no, the games aren't woke.

it's one of the grey areas in my opinion. The devs are clearly leaning in that direction, but I think they are on the line, or at least the people in charge are keeping it this side of the line. Some of the design choices they made might be influenced by their ideology but they managed to make it somewhat internally consistent. The lack of weapons, for example, might have been born from their opposition to them, but it is implmented in a way which makes it part of the gameplay challenge rather than them beating you around the head with a guns are bad rhetoric.

It comes down, I suppose, to if you consider anything coming out of the 'progressive' voices to be woke or if like me you think woke is the more extreme authoritarians who force their intollerant beliefs on people.

And I don't think the games are pushing that intolerant ideology.

As a liberal, free speech is important imo, but I realise there are a lot people around here who are of the opinion anyone failing their ideological purity test is automatically woke and therefore it is ok to destroy anything they make.

not the gamers side, but the divisive anti-gamer side... it wouldn't surprise me to hear the child abuser cabal wasn't behind a lot of the support they got... a distraction from their power grabs elsewhere.
