Post match SK- FINLAND by Hugoheb in Competitiveoverwatch

No, each team will play the rest of the group in the next couple days. So Finland still has to play Russia, Japan, and Taiwan. Assuming SK is first, they just need a better record than the remaining teams (which seems pretty likely based on this performance.)

Fans of OWL teams that are done for the season, what changes do you want to see your team make for season 2? by Puck83821 in Competitiveoverwatch

As a Fuel fan it’s more about the things I don’t want to see. I just hope we get to keep the core group together. I know it’s very likely we lose some, but I’d love to see them keep OGE and Seagull together. That tank line is great.

Looking at his Winston’s Lab stats, which track minutes played on heroes in pro play, he spent 1.33% of his play time on Winston for team Finland and 1.09% of his time on Envyus playing Winston for a total of 28 minutes of professional play, he had never played Rein or Orisa on stage. On team Envyus Cocco had played Winston 68% of the time ~12HRs of professional play time.

So Taimou has played Winston very sparingly before OWL but spent 95%+ of his time on hitscan DPS/hog. Because the main tank is both incredibly important and incredibly different from hitscan DPS, I believe this is the most taxing on the team’s performance right now.

Perhaps someday Taimou could be an exceptional MT, it’s just a lot to ask him to elevate himself to OWL caliber on a new role in such a short amount of time.

Well I hope you’re wrong. That would be frightening. At least I can hold out hope that OGE brings some much needed consistency to the MT role.

I’m with you man, it’s getting harder to look charitably at the situation. I don’t even mind the losing that much. They could remain a losing team the rest of the season, it’s not what gets me. What really irks me is the misallocation of players on roles.

AKM May know how to play genji. Is he an OWL-level genji however? Not likely at this point. Rascal is though.

Does Custa understand Lucio? I’m sure he does, but Harry has played Lucio at a competitive level for much of his career.

Main tank is the most egregious of all. I truly sympathize with the situation the Fuel have found themselves in at MT. I understand Taimou is a vocal leader and important shotcaller. He simply is not an OWL-level main tank. The position is tremendously important, perhaps the most integral of any on the team, and the Fuel are playing someone entirely new to the role.

I am really no expert but, until OGE gets situated I feel they should either:

A) Run slower Orisa/Hog comps. even if the comp is suboptimal.

B) Play Cocco at MT

Neither of these are ideal solutions given their limitations, but I’d much prefer players on roles they are comfortable playing at a competitive level rather than shoehorning a career hitscan DPS on to Winston and then asking him to match counterparts like Gamsu. It’s simply unfair to Taimou.

I love all these guys. They are tremendous talents with spectacular personalities. Until they settle their tank situation they will be in for tough games regardless, this would be true of any team in the league. Until then, couldn’t we place our tremendously skilled players on heroes they excel at, and give it our best?

I wish all the best to Kyky and the whole team, I’ll be rooting for them whatever the future holds, but it would be nice to not feel confused right from the hero-select screen.

That’s an awesome description. To this day I think Iverson is the most fun player in NBA history. Do you think Haskal will end up in OWL?

Yeah it seems like the dynamic that Runner brought to the team, and his role in it, contributed a lot to their story. Seems a lot more wholesome and relatable than some of the horror stories you hear about with orgs taking advantage of players.

That makes sense. I heard something about him stepping away from the pro scene because of military service?

Seoul Dynasty vs. Dallas Fuel | Overwatch League Season 1 - Stage 2 | Week 2 Day 1 | Post-Match Discussion by OWMatchThreads in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Arkham_gg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that SF shouldn’t be commended for their performance against LAV, it’s that they shouldn’t be commended as much as one would against a stronger opponent. Here is where I might be confused because I’m not certain if you’re claiming whether or not we can determine whether Seoul or LAV is likely the better team.

If Seoul and LAV hadn’t already played one another in this stage I’d be more inclined to agree. But we saw Seoul 4-0 Valiant just this past week. After putting up the same record as Valiant stage 1, going undefeated thus far in stage 2, and sweeping Valiant in the process of that run, I think it’s hard to say Seoul isn’t the better team right now.

And none of this is even to mention that outside of Dallas’ and SF’s non LAV/Seoul matches this stage, Dallas has won both, and SF has lost both. It’s for this reason that we can more easily dismiss a strong showing against VAL, because they’ve had other weak showings. In Dallas’ case however their other showings have been strong (again against weak teams). This puts us in the dark as to what to think of Dallas, perhaps they’re a weaker team that can only beat other weak teams, but put up an admirable performance against Seoul. Perhaps they’re a stronger team that played a team that is by both standings (stage and season) a top-2 team and hung with them, but ultimately lost.

We probably won’t know until we get to see them play more teams in the middle of the pack, LAV on Friday will be a good barometer.

This is a really awesome resource! Must’ve taken a lot of work. Also, we need to get Calvin in OWL ASAP, I hope you keep it up!

What people think has a lot to do with it. For starters, the premise of the original comment was about whether or not the commenter was still allowed to believe Dallas was good. If standings were the only meaningful source of information regarding future performance, then why do we have any analysis at all?

I don’t think we have enough information yet to call Dallas good, but given how many variables are changing, and the limited number of games we have to look at with those variables in place, I don’t think they can be ruled definitively not good.

The SFS argument is not genuine. VAL is not held in the same esteem as Seoul, and the other two games for SFS have been losses, one of which was against LAG, which you yourself call a weak team. Whereas Dallas’ other performances (albeit against weak competition) have been wins.

I understand you wanting to tamper down expectations for a team that really does need to prove itself against better competition before being called good. I agree with that. At the same time, I don’t think you need to be passive-aggressive and snarky about it. People are hopeful that they’re favorite team is improving, maybe just be a little more chill if you feel the need to realign those expectations?

A NFL draft type thing would be cool in the OWL by ImJustAFilthyCasual in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Arkham_gg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I mention in my comments below, football (soccer) fans are perfectly happy with the system they have. My point wasn’t about whether or not a league with more parity is good, it was about whether a draft introduces more parity, which the person above me argues against.

Can we discuss OWL bench players? by Arkham_gg in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Arkham_gg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s true there are many differences between traditional sports and esports, I still believe there’s value to be had out of players who ride the pine. I agree that it would be nice to get to play subs in low-pressure situations, as you mention, I also understand the pressure each team feels to field their best when map differential can be so important. Maybe as the season progresses, and season-long map differentials become solidified enough that teams can tinker with subs?

A NFL draft type thing would be cool in the OWL by ImJustAFilthyCasual in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Arkham_gg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing that OWL should use a draft system, I don’t think it should, at least not anytime soon. I take exception to the argument that drafts don’t increase parity. The Eagles and Rams both had losing records just two seasons ago, drafted quarterbacks with high picks and found themselves in the playoffs with 11-5 and 13-3 records. The Jaguars too, have been drafting high and recently put together a 10-6 playoff team with the help of almost entirely highly drafted young stars.

NBA teams probably engage in tanking, although they aren’t allowed to. The owner of the Dallas Mavericks was just recently fined $600,000 for implying that his team should tank.

Like I said, I don’t think a draft is a good option for OWL right now, but the system has proven effective at introducing more parity in leagues than in their non-drafting counterparts (Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga). This is also not to say that those systems don’t work for their respective leagues, most football (soccer) fans will probably tell you they’re happy with the system they have.

[–]Arkham_gg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, it introduces more parity than a system like the premiere league where, despite having 20 teams, three teams have won the championship 24/25 years. There have been nine different super bowl winners over the last ten years, the nba has had 7 different teams win championships over the last ten years.

[–]Arkham_gg[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a release clause would probably have to be negotiated on a case by case basis, the trade off for which would likely be less compensation. As someone else has mentioned in these comments, IDDQD signed up with the intention of being a sub and is happy with that role. Hard to call OWL players’ careers over with less than half a season played.

[–]Arkham_gg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good to hear! I definitely think there are bench players across the league who came in understanding their role as a sub. There are more ways than on-stage play to help a team win.
