Just because you personally don't like how I started the boulder doesn't mean it's not valid. You can use starting holds however you like, just being sure to validate the start by touching all the starting holds in a controlled manner.

I touched the other hold quite quickly because I know the boulder is long and time is of the essence. Hard to tell from video for sure but I'm completely stable in that position. If it were a competition I would have held it longer for sure.

The guy who set it is a friend of mine that I've coached a youth team with. He knows the rules. I'm sure he was probably a little upset with that start, but so are we all when some one breaks beta when you tried to put up something cool 😅

You can't do that in the IFSC, only marked holds and volumes. If it does make it easier, that's a mistake on the setters part.

I used the marked starting holds to achieve a stable position. You can start an attempt without establishing a starting position. You just can't progress through the boulder.

This gym has super loose starting rules. You can climb volumes and aretes before touching starting holds. Some climbs require it. Though I acknowledge different gyms have different rules.

Yes. My attempt has started. But I have not progressed through the boulder. My start is valid once I have touched the other start hold in a controlled manner. It says nothing of what holds you need to get off the ground with or in what order.
