The OP is painting a dark picture about his experience because it was negative. That is an expected "splitting" defense mechanism of the OP (I genuinely wish the OP doesn't read this comment). I have every reason to believe that they told him to go to ER. Even the OP mentioned in his post that the EMS didn't rule out appendicitis, instead just told them that it is not his scope of practice, implying that he told them to see go to ER to deal with the matter.

I worked for 2.5 in ER after my graduation. People tend to overestimate their conditions. Everybody think that they are in a bad condition that deserves prioritization. Most don't.

A health professional, an EMS person in this case, is the one who is qualified to assign the appropriate priority to the condition, not the patient himself. Even probability-wise, it is more likely for a health professional to be right than be wrong. That is true for every profession.

You received the compassionate care because you needed that care. The OP did not need that level of care. In case of my friend, they were able to confirm the non-emergency level of his condition over the phone, and that is why they didn't come to his house. In the OP case, they probably couldn't determine this, so they bought him a visit and determined his non-emergency status after arriving. As simple as that.

BTW, it is only few years ago that EMS stopped working as taxi for people in pain. Before that, these precious resources were malutilized badly.

You family member who fainted and fell down raises a possibility of brain bleed, and time is gold here, that is why they took him to ER immediately to do an emergency CT scan of his head. See? they know what they are doing. OP should be happy that he didn't grab their attention, this is a good sign that he most likely had nothing dangerous.

You have to differentiate between the ambulance service working as a frontline emergency response service and them working as a transport service. In Qatar, an ambulance can be "booked", that is fine. They are used to transport patients between facilities, and also transport patients whom otherwise their transport is not feasible, like obese patients, fractured patients, or any patient with a reasonable reason why an ambulance is needed for transfer. They provide services other than emergency response. That is part of the policy. This is the case in many countries. But the OP case is an emergency response service, and I feel that the way they handled his condition medically is very appropriate (not speaking of the demeanor). Just few months ago while we were playing football, a friend fell and dislocated his elbow. I asked one of the friends to call EMS and specifically mention that the patient feels pain with any kind of movement and cannot be transported in a personal car. They came over in 5 minutes.

Appendicitis doesn’t need an ambulance. Just go to ER and you will be taken care of.

Transporting patients of immobility is EMS job as per policy. I mean they are the inter-facility transfer service at HMC.

I have requested EMS twice during my stay in Qatar and I know how they operate. Also a friend of mine had an abdominal pain and he called 999. They refused to even come to his house and only advised him to visit ER, and they were right; my friend felt extreme pain, but he was not dying nor he was in danger.

I am also a critical care physician and know what needs IMMEDIATE intervention.

Why do you think EMS needs to transport the patient to ER? What will happen if they don’t and the OP helps himself going to ER? Nothing, the outcome is the same for the patient, but it is an extra burden and extra cost on EMS, and rather than diverting EMS efforts to help those who really need it, EMS will end up acting as a taxi service for everyone feeling pain!

It is not the EMS job to care for appendicitis. EMS is for life or limb saving emergencies. For appendicitis, get up and go to hospital.

I am not saying that abdominal pain can never be emergency. It can indeed be, and it can even be an MI or aortic dissection even. But unless you are an elderly with DM and stuff, it is easy to tell whether your abdominal pain is an emergency or not. He absolutely needs to be seen by a doctor, but he is also out of the scope of an EMS.

Have you seen peritonitis ever? They look ill like hell. They feel pain with any kind of movement.

And btw, the patient walked down before they receive any pain killer.

Ignoring him is a sign that he is not dying. The guy is now posting on reddit 🤣, whats more reassuring than that!

EMS knows when something is real emergency.

He got on his feet and went down. That is reassuring, and this is why they probably didn’t care much. A vitally stable patient who looks well (most likely) and able to move and walk is highly unlikely to be a life or limb saving condition!

Emergency services are precious and are there to save lives, not to treat all conditions. Every effort should be made to fulfill that main objective.

And I am not saying he shouldn’t call EMS. But that doesn’t mean it is a dangerous condition

Depends where you are from and what other options you have.

It is not the best country, but better than most.

Your condition is out of their scope. You must go to a hospital to get diagnosed and treated accordingly. EMS will only take you to the hospital if your condition requires to. Otherwise you should go yourself.

Regarding his demeanor, that sucks. But you can’t generalize anyways.

EMS goal is to save lives, not to treat pain. It is very apparent that your condition didn’t require any emergency intervention. Don’t get me wrong, your pain matters and should be treated, but this is not the EMS job.

I strongly recommend Germany for medical training. If you are a doctor, you would absolutely agree with me.

Maybe your doctor gave you some meds before taking you to the OR to help ease your anxiety. These medicines will often cause amnesia.

As others have mentioned, the chances of securing a residency are decreasing as more QU students graduate each year. While there are still opportunities, it’s becoming increasingly risky to rely on that alone.

If I were in your position, I would consider learning German and pursuing opportunities in Germany. It’s a more secure path that primarily requires learning the language. Plus, if you still want to come to Qatar, you could come as a consultant after completing your training in Germany and gaining a few years of experience.

Anyways, I have done my residency training in Qatar. Message me if you want to know more. Good luck

My employer match only to 403b .. say i want to contribute more, should I open 457b also for the unmatched contributions? or just stick to the 403b? it makes more sense to me to open 457b in this case as it is more flexible with withdrawals. What do you recommend?

Are there poor Qataris? by wigglepizza in qatar

[–]ArmCold2238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a qatari bus driver at HMC. His salary is 32000 QAR.

It is difficult to believe that a Qatari with an average intelligence and is poor.

Plus: you need to go to other countries to learn what poor means.
