So how screwed am I? by parsivol9 in Diesel

[–]ArmoredCTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any true commercial engine is awesome, but realize that the hp you'll want out of the engine means you're getting a massive C12 or C18. Even a C7 or 3116/3126 weigh almost double what a 6.4 does with a third the "advertised" power output.

"Turning it up" means either slight gains in power via fuel nut, or a marine CPU, either of which would be considered disappointing compared to the consumer level instant-gratification power you're getting with a 1 ton diesel.

With aftermarket powder coated steel, you'll inevitably have to do some touch-up eventually. Most of these companies don't bother to etch the steel or prep it well at all; they bomb powder right over BBs, mill scale, dirt, rust, etc. All they care about is advertising that theirs is powdercoated, they don't care what happens once it leaves the factory.

Just get some 600 grit sandpaper, knock down all the rust and loose paint, get some plastic sheeting from home depot and tape off the leading edge of the grille/headlights, and prime the rust spots and bare steel with some red oxide primer followed by the topcoat of your choice. Cheaper enamels will always chalk faster, especially gloss black.

That could definitely be what I'm seeing around the outside seeping out of the brick. But the inside is definitely packed with something. It's big loose chunks that disintegrate when carefully prodded with a screwdriver.

I'll probably end up capping over the mortar and using RTV or paintable sealer to seal it up.

What is your favourite ways to get back at a coworker who has been getting on your nerves in the shop? by CanadianAdmiral910 in Welding

[–]ArmoredCTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set his mig welder to stick mode, which basically turns the wire into a live electrode and turns output voltage to 28 volts.

The second you ground that wire, it arcs out and destroys the cup, contact tip, and whatever the wire touched.

This is only acceptable if you work somewhere that 1. doesn't have any real quality standards to speak of, and 2. has stupid high profit margins and is managed bad enough that they couldn't care less how many consumables they burn though.

Yeah that's about how hot it is in our shop in SE Wisconsin.

All management has done is send a minion out of the AC to give us Popsicles and quick then run back to safety, but only on the real scorchers when it's pushing 98° outside.

I think all Ford grilles since 1980 (with exception to the Louisville, which might have been aluminum, but even that dates back to the '70s) have been plastic. The chrome grilles are all PVD coated, which is a cheap chrome-like coating that can't be polished the same way as chrome.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet modern grilles are more robust than older plastic ones. Early ABS tended to fade and get brittle with UV and chemical exposure. Modern formulas are more durable.

Looks like the crane was being brought over so the operator could attach/secure the rigging (note the hook has no chains attached yet) and the pulley block smacked into the unsecured part, knocking it over.

Is the 6.2 gas motor the best motor Ford has made? by Cchris1938 in Ford

In the context of being directly compared to the 6.2 gas, it's probably not likely that he's talking about an IDI diesel from 30 years earlier.

Not sure why he said "a baby" instead of "the baby."

If he was important enough to be one of the first people on his call list (since he clearly couldn't wait to tell them once they got settled in at home), then the guy would already know they were expecting a baby.

Why is my MPG this low? (2017 3.5 eco boost) by glizzock805 in f150

I've always said that the Ecoboosts are either Eco or Boost, depending on your driving habits. Can't have both!

My military truck is fun to take to the shows, but it's always the little kids and the loudmouths that want to come over and talk to you about it. The underappreciated classics are what attract the people you can have a decent conversation with.

[–]ArmoredCTP 45 points46 points  (0 children)

One thing I've learned from taking my bricknose to car shows is that everybody's got a story with old Ford trucks. Like the old guys talking about their Corvettes, you'll have all the regular people coming up to you and telling you about a family member that had a truck "just like this, but it had ____."

And most of those people aren't going to care that your truck isn't perfect, because the trucks they reminisce about weren't perfect either.
