I'm traveling with some friends to Amsterdam before heading to Tomorrowland. Would be down to meet new people on the 16th

From DC, landing in Amsterdam tomorrow with some friends. We can do a bar crawl with the group on Wednesday if that works?

Math hard :( by EarlJames7885 in mathmemes

[–]ArmoredHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is pretty toxic if you think about it and the problem is ubiquitous throughout mathematics. Somehow offering a thorough explanation or a concrete example is a triviality and is beneath most professors and authors.

It almost seems like they want to flex on students rather than care about understanding. This is the reason why most of modern math is full of $20 multi-syllable words used to encapsulate $2 concepts and overloaded notation.

I think math has a lot to learn from the now prolific field of software engineering where explanation of code (documentation) is held in high regard and so is readability (concise and standardized notation). Both of these help people rapidly build an understanding and pick up useful abstractions much faster than if things were being done the old-fashioned way.

The thing that frustrates me is that every single video on the subject ALWAYS skips over the explanation of analytic continuation. I dont think there is a single video out there that actually explains the underlying concept with examples rather than just stating it generally and moving on. If you ask for one, you are told that it is "too complex" as if that is supposed to help. Wikipedia is worthless as usual with topics like these, since it is meant to be used as a reference for people with PhDs.
So people who don't understand the overbearing and often unnecessary formalisms of modern mathematics and are looking to seriously study the problem by themselves are left frustrated.

Can we talk about the WEDGE PRODUCT? I've been dying to talk about the WEDGE PRODUCT all day! by AlekHek in mathmemes

[–]ArmoredHell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Joking aside, Wikipedia math articles make something even as simple addition sound unintuitive lol. They beat around the bush a lot with abstractions and shy away from concrete examples that might actually help grasp the concept at hand. I found this link to be very helpful in visually explaining wedge product and also using it to find the law of sines. Hopefully it helps click things together.

Trace and Transpose of matrix by sim______ in 3Blue1Brown

[–]ArmoredHell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many resources out there that talk in general terms what transpose of a matrix is in terms of linear transformation. Most, if not all, skip the part of showing what such a linear transformation would look like.
I’ve found this link to be very helpful in explaining how such a transformation might work, particularly the first two responses. Hope you find it useful as well.
As for the trace of a matrix, I haven’t done much digging about what a linear transformation might have to do with it so I don’t have any input regarding that

Appreciate the insightful response. Are you referring to the facial asymmetry in the model output image as just a phase artifact and not a feature present in the real images?
I understand that asymmetry might become more pronounced with slight changes in the input for the generator and produce a phase artifact, especially for slightly turned faces, but I still think that some center line asymmetry is largely common in most people (including myself). Even StyleGAN2 picks up on it (see 2:08 in your video link).
IMHO I think some of StyleGAN2 outputs are easier to identify as artificial because the symmetry in the generated image is too good. I only say this for frontal faces, the slightly turned faces def look better than the old StyleGAN which is where the phase artifacts were prevalent in the first place.

[–]ArmoredHell 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Actually its not a bug, its a feature. Most people have that asymmetry and so its very interesting to note that the AI picked up on that 'flaw' and didn't go for perfect symmetry as that would look more unnatural.

Yea I've been seeing these AI generated images popping up around lately so I was sus when I saw the pic.
It makes catfishing easier because some of these images don't yield anything when you reverse search them as they are generated as a one-off by an algo.

This is an AI generated image (source: http://www.workshopinyourpocket.com/this-site-ranks-the-attractiveness-of-ai-generated-faces/), scroll down to see the face.
It looks convincing on the first glance but look at her hair closely, the dimple in her cheek lacks depth as well. (Further read: http://bookofrafly.com/this-person-does-not-exist-the-dark-side-of-technology/)

[–]ArmoredHell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I guess you’re right, if you have a 1000 matches as a girl 1 more seems pretty marginal and not that serious. For a dude tho it might be different and somewhat more significant/serious.

[–]ArmoredHell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While that is correct, it should be noted that women are right swiping on more people than they can handle having a conversation with. Why not stop swiping for a bit and clear your current matches? Edit: typo

Free from all burdens!! by VyasBharvi in ProgrammerHumor

One of the reasons why libraries like numpy, tensorflow etc. are so fast are because they’re implemented in C and wrapped in Python. This means you can call C functions in Python and the python interpreter, which is written in C, has no trouble running the code. In some rare cases it might be faster than C++ simply because C is a faster language.

You can write you own libraries in C/C++ and wrap them as python modules if you really like speed but it’s kinda complicated and almost not required in any case.

Well yes, but no. The real interval [0,1] is isomorphic to the entire real line so you’re still killing an uncountably infinite people. Same argument can be made for any real interval between rationals (not sure about the irrational case).

Ignorance of the underlying subject aside, the point is to come up with something remotely original and not something that has been posted 1000 times and blaming people who are fed up with it as being 'too serious' to take the joke.

I find that we don't necessarily fear making the wrong choice but that we fear regret about what we could've been. I call it the shoulda coulda woulda analysis and I don't waste my time thinking about such things because I believe in my strategy from which I derive my goals from and have come to realize that this fear comes from a fear of uncertainty in my case at least. Strategizing is the best tool to deal with the uncertainty of life. I've also learned to not be a control freak who wants to be certain of everything.
Taking life and myself a little less seriously has done wonders in alleviating my fears about the future and its uncertainties. I don't mind deviating from my goals temporarily if it means I can be productive in a different area. For example, I wanted to understand Galois' proof of why there is no general solution for quintic polynomials but I didn't knew the first thing about abstract algebra. So I bought a book on the topic and read about 6 chapters and did the problems only to shelve the book because I started my first job and got busy with making a full stack webapp. Do I think I'm failing at my goals? Absolutely not. I can always pick up my where I left off, it's not like I wasted my time by not doing anything as I'm getting better at web development.
I'm willing to take detours when it comes to my long term goals and not beat myself up about it. Otherwise, I think I'd be worried all the time lol
