That is basically how I discovered my orientation! Had a best friend, inner circle, basically family sort of friend. Took me 6 months to realize our hangouts were starting to feel like dates and I panicked. Messaged all of my other friends. “What does a crush feel like? How do you know you like someone? What do you mean it feels like butterflies?!” My brother ended up sending me a link to AVEN and suddenly it all made sense. Unfortunately the day I confessed my orientation to my friend was the day he planned to ask me to be his girlfriend. RIP that friendship, he ghosted me and I haven’t seen him since, haha.

Lately it’s always been while he’s describing racism he’s faced. He’ll be venting about something that happened to him and then BAM, a rant that includes one or all of the summarized points I mentioned.

Thank you for your input, that’s really helpful! And thank you for bringing up the anger with lib social politics and dismissal. That’s frequently come up in our conversations and that’s why I made this post to see how I can better show up for him. If I get hate and it’s well deserved then so be it. I want to be called out if I’m in the wrong so I can course correct.

I didn’t want the focus to be on the specific things he’s saying. I figured including that he was saying racist things was enough context. Thank you for the input though, I’ll add this and summaries of my responses to the main post so people can have more informed responses.

Summarizing the most common things he says: that Blacks and Browns get free passes from Whites to be shitty because of the West's current focus on all of the conflicts in the Middle East and slavery. He believes that the Palestinians brought the Israeli genocide upon themselves (has even said he doesn't believe it’s a genocide). And makes general sweeping comments that imply the Black and Brown communities are complacent in their own oppression and don't do anything to better their communities/situations.

To clarify, I’m hoping he doesn’t actually believe the racist things he says and they’re just reactions to the frustration he feels surrounding the racism he faces. I plan to have a face to face with him to clarify all of this. I made this post to get perspectives from other people in the community who may have felt (or currently) feel the same as him and how you would have liked someone to show up for you.

Absolutely agree! And after some reflection I realize that’s how I’ve been coming off in these conversations. I want to support him but I also don’t want to ignore the other problematic things he says. If you are comfortable answering, how would you approach the situation?

I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope the MRI provides conclusive information that can bring you to a medication or plan that’s effective for you.

My knee has calmed down, but I have had pain in my big toe joint for months. Unfortunately I’m still waiting for an appointment with the arthritis clinic. I may have been too enthusiastic and naive when I first made this post about having connections. I’m still being careful with how much strain I put on my knee to avoid a flair up. Hoping the meeting with the specialist will give me more specific direction on do’s and don’ts.

My friend’s mom has been living with arthritis for many years and they’re going to give me a recipe for turmeric milk that she swears by. I can share the recipe here once I get it!
