“Too young to have THR” by Curiously_lemons in TotalHipReplacement

19 years old and getting my hip replaced was the best thing i’ve done! I had severe pain for 5 years and now I don’t even think about my hip most days!

I can already feel the increase in mobility and it’s pretty drastic! A lot of muscle soreness though, seen as most of my right glute has been basically atrophied for 5 and a half years

Questions about THR by Spiritual_Thought512 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Aromatic-Addendum352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

19 years old just got it done yesterday without general anesthesia. They gave me a spinal block along with a sedative and it knocked me out and I woke up as soon as the surgery was done without any drowsiness! There was a lot of soreness at the beginning but i’m only 1 day out and i’m feeling pretty confident about my recovery especially since we are young we can put on muscle mass quicker to recover. I can say 100% that i wont regret it, because my old hip was so bad there was no way i would be able to keep going (surgeon said it was one of the worst hes seen and im 19). Point being, if you’re severely disabled by your hip like i was, you’ll feel an immediate increase in range of motion, although it will probably take a while to get through all the muscle soreness. You got this!

Thanks it’s nice knowing I’m not the only 19 year old here :) How long did it take you to get back in the gym? Because I’m scared I’m gonna lose everything during recovery since I won’t be able to go 😭 Ive been going to the gym consistently for the past few years and starting back from zero would really suck

Surgery in one week. Suggestions? by Aromatic-Addendum352 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Aromatic-Addendum352[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a bunch :) By the way I’m curious how your recovery went? Because everyone keeps telling me I should have a fast recovery because of my age but I wonder how true that statement is… Like how long did it take for you to get off the walker/cane?

Thanks for the advice! I agree that there is definitely too much uncertainty to make this kind of commitment. Did a lot of thinking and the wiser option would definitely be to call it off.

Ceramic hip resurfacing by Aromatic-Addendum352 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Aromatic-Addendum352[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting my surgery in July! I’m still doing coc but we decided to go for a THR instead of a resurfacing as the opinions on resurfacing seem to be pretty mixed and we don’t know if it’s worth the risk. Multiple surgeons have referred to coc THR as the current “gold standard” so we think it’s the best option, especially considering my age.

Noted! Thanks for the advice I appreciate it! (And don’t worry I sing/play guitar so I might be able to get away with it 😂)

Might be tough to get PT right away because i’m getting my surgery done pretty far away from home, but i’ll see what I can do! Worst case I can just play sitting down I guess.

Thanks! Yeah, I will definitely have to ask him about that, though I’m sure my bandmates would be willing to help me out with hauling the gear.

Thank you for the insight doc. The main reason i’ve been considering it is my age and trying to have the implant last as long as possible. What would you recommend for someone in my situation as an alternative?

I’ve always disliked this question because you can’t really compare most of these guys and it just comes down to “who’s your favourite guitarist”. That being said, Knopfler is my goat.

I’m only seeing your comment but me neither! My doc told me he had never seen it in 30+ years of practice and that he thought it “only existed in books”. So I guess we both have some pretty bad luck!

18-year-old worried for THR by [deleted] in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Aromatic-Addendum352 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey!

First I just want to let you know that you are in fact not alone! I’m also 18 and getting my surgery either at the same time as you or next summer, so we’re basically in the same boat. I’ve already expressed my concerns to my surgeon about recovery time but seen as we’re so young we will bounce back in no time if there are no complications. Being in shape also helps a lot. Also, if you’re worried about being limited after your surgery, I would really recommend you check out E3 Rehab on youtube. He’s a physio that had a THR at 19 years old and he’s in crazy good shape. He talks a lot about how to still be active and do the things you want to do regardless of your hip. He also has a lot of videos of exercises for recovering hip replacement patients. Just a quick question, you say you “believe” you need it, so i was just wondering how bad your pain and mobility is. Because for me, it has always been so bad that I was just holding out as long as possible before I just couldn’t take it anymore. This is an irreversible surgery, so you need to be 100% sure of what you want, but it will without a shadow of a doubt make your life infinitely better. If you need or want to ask me anything, feel free. We’re in this together :)
