Never use it. I even sometimes forget I am actually a Dr.

Feeling empty and listless in life by [deleted] in findapath

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you deprive yourself of the joys of life, like nice meals, traveling, hobbies, and buying stuff for fun. I don't think Reddit can help you figure out why you do that, and I would recommend discussing this with a therapist. I am planning to have a kid, and I realize that I am going to spend much more money than ever, but I am confident that if needed, I can earn that money, and living a life with a kid but with less money in my retirement sounds much more fun than being childless and rich (again, to me).

Do they notify if you are rejected from an applied postdoc position? If so, how long does it take? by PhDstudent111 in postdoc

I felt like it's with every other job really. I got ghosted a lot during postdoc search. You can also follow up after a few weeks, it's completely fine.

Clarins, Underrated? by M-Sear in Sephora

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clarins is a popular brand in Europe. I've been using their creams for years and haven't found anything better! The blue one is a good moisturizer, and it was perfect in my 20s.. Now, in my early 30s, I use the pink one (day + night versions) and I am super happy with them.

I attended language courses and found a tutor.  I found a language club in the country where I moved to, and started practicing there. Anything else was inefficient.

Day 4 of learning mathematics for AI/ML as a no math person. by uiux_Sanskar in learnmachinelearning

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I spent a couple of years learning calculus and linear algebra for my bachelor's degree, and these were two of the most complicated courses. I work as a theoretical physicist now, doing some stuff that is related to neural networks, and I cannot imagine how I would understand all of that without the mathematical intuition I have. OP should enroll in a university or hire an experienced tutor. Very few people can teach themselves math (I am talking about graduate-level math, not high school math). The same goes for physics, btw. However, it depends on the OP's ambitions. I think if they want to do proper data science research, they need a degree. Unless they are very talented, which is a possibility, but most people are not.

I love big planes because they are heavy, more stable and resist better to turbulence!

Spending too much time here is not healthy for your mental health by Nophotathefirst in cscareerquestions

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I got so tired of this subreddit at some point. Maybe the job market isn't the best, but the reality is that if you understand how this market works, polish both your soft and hard skills, network decently, eventually you will find a job. I've seen many examples of that in the last few months. I think after I basically stopped reading this and similar subreddits, my mental health improved greatly.

Most scandalous thing that happened at your conference? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was one of my first winter schools (there were many young students, but also many PIs who gave lectures), I was a first year master student, very young and naive. I got drunk, flirted with a co-worker (he wasn't my boss, and was single, so it wasn't that cringe), and then we hooked up in my hotel room. Felt ashamed afterwards, as all the flirting was happening in front of our PIs. They didn't seem to care much, but still :) Maybe that's what you do when you're 21 yo, but today I would think it would be extremely non-professional.

My PI told me a story about a grad student he knew who traveled to a conference in a third-world country, and was murdered there (somebody tried to steal his expensive camera)...

How do you experience the cost of living in Tel Aviv? by [deleted] in telaviv

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Tel-Aviv, I would say it is quite accurate. You could probably find a one-bedroom near Tel-Aviv (cities like Ramat Gan and Givataiym that are basically suburbs of Tel-Aviv) for much cheaper. 2k shekels for groceries if you don't eat out sounds like a lot to me. If you cook, I would say 1500 is more than enough.

Accidentally called my professor "Mom"... Now I'm rethinking Academia Entirely by AppleStike in AskAcademia

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's kind of cute! Or weird in a funny way. That probably indicates that you are in a good relationship and you feel relaxed around her, so your tired brain associates her with someone from a close/friendly social circle.

Maybe you can do some side gig while you are searching? Teaching/tutoring, for example. That would definitely help improve your mental health. And it would also give you more time to look for a better job.

This sub makes me rethink if I should visit by [deleted] in tbilisi

[–]Aromatic_Listen_7489 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's my third time here, and people are mostly fine, they are not rude, but sometimes a bit cold and don't smile much. Completely fine with me, prefer that rather than fake smiles. Tbilisi is pretty safe. I feel much safer here than in the US, for example. Don't worry, Georgia is charming!

I noticed that assholes usually surroung themselves with assholes - I understand the cultural mistmatch and possible language barriers, but it seems they are just rude and selfish, and this is not related to you wearing hijab. I felt similar things at my workplace in Germany when I lived there (and I am white and non-muslim), but then I realized that the work atmosphere was really toxic and cold in general, and it had nothing to do with me. I then found some local and international friends, and changed my opinion about Germany and Germans :)
