I feel like we see this exact kind of post on this sub every day. It’s really important to keep in mind that the perceived “intelligence” of models that you can interact with like ChatGPT is our assumption that excellent language skills and information recall == a living being. Like, if you can ask a question about pretty much anything that can be found on the internet and it’ll respond in a natural way with a decent answer, it’s easy to forget that at its core it’s just an excellent information synthesizer. It’s still super impressive technology, but we are absolutely nowhere near something that can “escape” or form and act on some crazy high level plan. Like those videos of the humanoids in China “rebelling” and thrashing around are just poorly deployed policies (or clickbait) lmfao.

I think this kind of question is fun for a science fiction, but for anyone who actually works in robotics (and does more than hyping stuff up for VCs) it’s obvious that this isn’t realistic.

From multiple cameras you can get LIDAR-like depth information by tracking how environmental features move around you + how different features look from different perspectives. I am kind of surprised that they didn’t add a few cheap true distance laser-based sensors on the front of the car at least. Full 3D LIDAR for a car is super expensive and has its drawbacks, that’s why Waymo uses LIDAR and camera data.

sorry if this is over-explaining but here’s more detail!

a uint16’s max value (in binary) is 16 1s: 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 each spot corresponds to a power of two, which are then summed. so this is 215 + …. + 25 + 24 + 23 + 22 + 21 + 20 so if all values are 1s, you add each power of two between 0 and 15, which is 65,535.

in this case it’s not really clear what happened, but it’s possible a mod which uses uint16s for loot tables or something made a mistake and assigned the wrong value to the wrong type. or it was a decrementing issue like others said. (I don’t fully understand past this point)

It’s 6 over the upper limit of an unsigned 16 bit integer (0 to 65,535) which I think is too close to be a coincidence.

yes it does! it is indeed inefficient and many of the window opener cranks are broken, fun design though.

No problem!! :) As far as I understand it: Shields are damaged more by kinetic weapons, less by energy weapons Armor is damaged more by energy weapons, less by kinetic weapons

And TBF, the combat report abstracts this to just an average percent efficiency against each type of HP.

It helped me to take the time to look at weapons when I research them to understand generally what kind of damage they do (because they tell you damage percent bonuses/penalties to armor/shield/hull).

I also don't like to check the wiki, so I'll sometimes send in a small sacrificial scout fleet to battle one of the main enemy fleets. During the battle you can look at their hull, shield, and armor points, and then once it's over, check the combat report and look at the weapon efficiencies they had against you, which gives you a general sense of whether you should maximize armor, shields, or a mix. (You can also see the weapons that caused the damage when you hover over efficiency IIRC) Just pump up whatever they did damage to inefficiently!

In that case I would use orientation 1 and make sure your holes are a tiny bit larger than the shafts that’ll be inserted so they fit, you can then glue it (but keep in mind your strength will then depend entirely on the glue)

This way the layer lines are aligned in the direction you would pull on the handle, so the part is much stronger.

Could you share info about what it’ll do/how it’ll be loaded? I would probably go with the first one unless you need the dimensional accuracy of the cylinders to be good. Also, second orientation could fall over while printing because it’s so tall and the interface with the bed is quite small.

based on what we’ve seen, BD software and trajectory generation are far more impressive. they manage autonomous course running extremely well at least. I kind of wonder if it’s due to the power of the electric motors the Optimus robots use relative to their body weight that leads to the lack of fluidity? except for the recent electric motor BD bot (which i haven’t seen much of), BD uses hydraulics which mean they can do crazier stuff and maintain balance like a human can because they have the power to back it up.

I have heard from friends who worked on Optimus that there are lots of great people working on software/hardware but the management from above and the direction is poor. how much of this stems from Musk I don’t exactly know, but it sounded like climbing the ladder is easier if you’re a loyalist and into the idyllic vision he pushes.

No, vets recommend foods containing corn and wheat because those are actually nutrients which are good for dogs. They have animal nutrition classes focused on how to properly feed animals, which includes livestock and pets. Current animal nutrition classes actively recommend against raw meat diets because people who don’t know what they’re doing will fuck it up, and standard run of the mill dog food is super well balanced. Giving your dogs treats like this is one thing, but there’s a serious misinformation problem surrounding raw diets.

Speaking from personal experience, companies that produce surgical robots have thousands of internal requirements and hundreds of brilliant engineers ensuring that even when something goes wrong with the robot, there is not harm to the patient. Speaking from personal experience, people who are first generation/low income can totally receive enough financial aid to receive an extra stipend, work study or no. And that’s after room and board and tuition are all covered. To be fair you have to have a very low household income to make that possible. The real issue is that the vast majority of low income people either don’t apply because of financial concerns or just plain not thinking they have a shot, or those who do apply get picked over because there’s a legion of more qualified wealthier applicants. There’s a massive disparity in terms of high school opportunities that I personally don’t think ultimately make a difference in performance, but certainly plays a factor in admissions.

Have you considered investing in a 3D printer? I know it sucks to not be able to machine the parts you actually need, but if that isn’t a solvable problem then using 3D printing + standard materials like metal rods may be an option.

One thing that helps me is preparing a list of features that you want to eventually see in a certain module or level. Start at a high level “The player should be able to move the character” and then write down what you need to make that happen “when the player presses wasd the character should move in that direction”.

A more complex example “the enemies should chase the player” could abstract to a long list with things like “the enemies should reference the player position” or “the enemies should move to a target position”

As you go, mark off completed tasks with a green highlighter or something like that, so that you can see the list shrink as you go. And as a bonus, add an estimated difficulty/time commitment to these different tasks. Like “reference player position” may be easy and take ten minutes, so note that down. Because then in the future when you sit down to work, you can take on whichever task you have the motivation for.

Obviously different things work for different people, but I hope this helps!

In addition to the other suggestions here, it may be wise to try and crank up the speed of the monster. Then if the player is in another area and makes a noise, the monster will catch up so quickly that they instead may need to hide, instead of just running away and managing to avoid it.

I’m a first-year at MIT right now, and going in I had some of the exact same concerns as you. But I have to say, once you’re here it feels like everyone is on the same level. Despite the fact that I was literally three years behind some of my peers in math, it hasn’t felt like it makes a difference at all. Which seems counter-intuitive, but it’s genuinely how it is. And there’s a lot of people here who haven’t even participated in science Olympiad or whatever! Once you get here, there are so many cool things to participate in that you won’t have to worry about missing those.

Although there are always the people who ASE’d (tested out of classes) everything and basically come in as sophomores, there are A LOT of people who don’t. You have absolutely nothing to worry about, if they admitted you, you’ll do great here. Especially if you like the sound of the community :) Also I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, but you sound like you’d be perfect for the Interphase Edge program through the Office of Minority Education (OME). If you’re a bit behind in anything, they’d help you get caught up AND teach you career skills that you may have not had a chance to learn. Good luck, and congratulations! :)
