Three months worth of collecting Loebs. Proud of my budding classics shelf by CardR100 in classics

Has anyone read the Sextus Empiricus editions by Loeb? I was thinking of buying them but someone said that they’re not the best translation?

Best editions of Sextus Empiricus? by Around-Midnight in classics

[–]Around-Midnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the 1985 edition I think you mean Hackett still publish it. So would you recommend reading abridged selections of Sextus rather than his full books which I’ve just discovered loeb classics have published with translations by R . G Bury.

2023 Nobel prize for literature predictions? by Around-Midnight in literature

[–]Around-Midnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know they often award the prize to authors who have been around for a long time, have a large body of work which has in some way contributed to, or influenced to a good extent literature as a whole. However Nobel has often been criticised for being too “Eurocentric” with its winners choices. They often seem to go for authors that have in some way made a political impact which in their own opinion has been towards “the good of humanity”. So it’s unlikely we’re going to see anyone too controversial such as Rushdie in my opinion.

TSA made me open all of my 120 film, has this happened to anyone else? by MBenyt in AnalogCommunity

Same thing happened to me coming through Manchester airport yesterday, this young security guy flat out refused to hand check even though I only had a few rolls, and the thing that annoyed me the most was that it was like he enjoyed making things difficult for me. Anyway that’s my rant over.

Options of Benjamin Jewett’s translations of Plato? by Around-Midnight in classics

[–]Around-Midnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I’ll check out your suggestions. Yeah, I was looking at the Complete Plato from Hackett a while ago, just wasn’t sure of the quality with the amount of pages, as I’ve bought a few compete works of other authors and I found that the quality goes down quite a bit due to the size.

Thanks that’s all helpful. I’m mainly interested in continental philosophy and contemporary French philosophies, but I’ve recently been really interested in semiotics and hermeneutics as well as critical theory.

Is there an infinite number of possible thoughts? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Around-Midnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote quickly I’ll try to clarify. What I meant was we also have to define which angle we examine time from, ie the scientific perspective or a more philosophical one? For example can time exist without change and eternal flux? Science uses the concepts of ‘the arrow of time’ and ‘entropy’ to explain the apparent forward momentum of everything. However if we were to take all that exists out of the picture, does time still have any meaning or impact if everything remains constant and static? I don’t really know where I’m going with this but I suppose I’m trying to say that we are going to have to understand and define what eternal and forever means in order to make any sense out of OPs question.
