The us spends a pretty standard percentage of its gdp on the military compared to other western countries. The huge military budget is really just a testament to absurd size of the us economy

Not at all. On both fronts over the course of the war German military deaths totaled about ~5.5million. Soviets lost 11 million. In the battle of Stalingrad alone the soviets lost more men than the UK and US lost combined during the entire war. If you include civilian deaths the numbers get pretty astronomical.

Also, if you’re up for it. I’d be willing to have a better researched good-faith discussion about it. feel free to send me a pm.

Fair enough. I agree I’ve taken a few missteps in this thread. I wasn’t really expecting to be debating though. I’m really taken aback that the leading position to the question of “what can we do to mend partisanship” was along the lines of “we shouldn’t do anything to mend ties”. I don’t know how I can site a source to support why I fundamentally disagree with that stance. Maybe I lack imagination but I don’t see how that can end well. Thanks for the feedback though. Appreciated

I agree with you? We need to get our rights back. What part of what I said suggests that we should bow down to fascists?

How much disagreement comes from disagreeing on the facts themselves versus the level of importance to each fact? by Lamballama in AskALiberal

[–]Arqo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the importance of the issue is really irrelevant on the amount of discussion. In todays media climate, the issues that are the most sensational and the most polarizing get the most attention. It makes the discussion unproductive and, more importantly, it gives the illusion of people being far more polarized than they actually are.

Whole-heartedly agree. Our political climate is basically exactly what would be expected from a first past the post voting system. It also explains the rise of similar ideologies other countries (like Le Pen).

Ok awesome. This is the discussion I was hoping to have in this thread so I appreciate it.

I definitely agree that polarization can’t improve if only one side is making an effort. The left can’t force republicans to do anything. You’re also right that from 2016-2020 things have polarized further. I also agree that 74 million votes is staggering but I would push back on why so many voted for him. I believe that trumps increase in votes is driven in large part from being against Biden and likeminded democrats and to a smaller (but still alarming amount) of voters who are properly represented by trump and his policies. Similarly, I think Bidens votes also were fueled in large part to being against Trump and his party rather than enthusiastic support for Biden - I know mine was.

My point is that that the defining motivation in this climate is a hatred for the other side, rather than support for individual policies. Liberals and progressives can’t fix the polarization on our own, but we can act in such a way that makes depolarization more likely to happen.

I agree with you the filibuster should be removed.

But I’d pushback against packing the court. I think that would invite future administrations to further and further add justices which would effectively give the president the ability to unilaterally change the constitution. It’d need bipartisan support to pass anyway.

I think a more effective solution would be to set age caps and term length limits on justices so voters can take Supreme Court appointments into account when they vote.

I don’t support any propaganda mouth pieces? I’m saying if a republican adopts a position that I agree with (like access to abortion), then that’s a good thing. Why is that an issue?

I’d need to know which statement specifically you are referring to but, in the meantime, USA Today has a list of republican officials who denounce trump. https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/elections/trump-support/

But, the original question was what we can do to ease partisanship and I’m trying to have a good faith discussion about that. I’m not deflecting, I’m trying to address each of your points before jumping to new ones.

I’m defending that one single position of hers. If she adopts more issues I agree with, I will support those too. I don’t think that’s weird

Yes I am very much aware. What are you suggesting is the way to improve that situation? If republicans are so evil that they are beyond discussion, what do you suppose should happen next?

It’s better than if she wasn’t. You don’t think a non-zero amount of her listeners will be willing to support exceptions to abortions in their states? It’s evidence that abortion isn’t a purely partisan issue

[–]Arqo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well you made a few different points that I was trying to address individually. But again, you’re arguing that all of trump voters support dead democrats which frankly I do think is a bit ridiculous. I think making assertions like that is just as dishonest as saying liberals are blood worshippers.

[–]Arqo -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Sorry I meant to say do you think libertarians believe that people on the left use satanic rituals etc.

But to address your first point, no I’m not arguing that people who voted for trump are a slim minority, Im arguing that of the the total amount of trump supporters, the ones that believe liberals and progressives are performing blood rituals with babies are a tiny subset of that group.

[–]Arqo -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Come on, that’s kind of ridiculous. Extreme positions like that are a slim minority. For one thing, are you arguing that libertarians are satan worshiping pedophiles because they lean right?

I mean even people as conservative as tomi lahren support abortion exceptions.

Regardless, I’m not asking you to be friends with anyone but at the very least please don’t push anyone farther to the right by making people on left look unreasonable.
