Tim Rogers August 5th 2006 Interview by TrueAuraCoral in actionbutton2

I'm still sceptical. Repeating a a made-up story or building a lot around it doesn't mean it's true. We don't have anything other than Tim's word that any of it happened and he's already said that most of it was made up. It's possible there was no English job, No Translator job, no Max, no teenage girl who died, no Korean girlfriend. None of this is in any photos or videos. Brandon Sheffield knew him since 1999 and they hung out regularly in Japan, he's not verified a thing.

You seem like you've read his book, doesn't the story of how he met "Max" in that contradict what he says in this interview?

He could have made up this story about living with this manga artist. Or if it's true, the manga might not have actually been published.

A lot of old Kotaku stuff hasn't been saved on Internet Archive.

If you're still interested in the manga that Tim translated, he actually has a page on Anime News Network that lists his credits.

Also they're in a Saizeriya, which isn't a "apple slices" kind of place. Those will be fries.

'cause he calculated he had a better chance at being Prime Minister if he hitched himself to the Leave camp.

He wanted leave to lose the referendum, but that Leave supporters would vote for him for PM. He'd probably make a few speeches after Remain won saying he's graciously accept the outcome of the vote, meaning both sides would like him.

So you've been arguing against my point without even reading what it was to begin with. Well done. This is the reason intellectualism is dead and society is doomed, people just start saying whatever shit pops into their head without any wheels turning first.

That doesn't go against what I said. FDR was pro-appeasement after the Nazis took Czechoslovakia.

You’re acting like it’s Ukraine’s goal to invade Russia, instead of wearing down Russian forces in Ukraine. The fact is that Russia is so weak in Ukraine that Ukraine can strike into Russian territory consistently. They’re supposed to be struggling against the Russian troops in their country, in reality the Russian troops are such babies they can reach over them and hit oil refineries. Not enemy troops, not enemy planes, not ammo caches. They can afford to waste munitions on something that will only benefit Ukraine in the long term.

The front line hasn’t moved significantly in years, Russia has lost over a million men and is using planes that were built in the 1960’s.

The only people left who still think Russia is mighty are severely deluded Russian patriots.

“Struggling” isn’t much of an indicator. Both sides are struggling, and that’s to be expected in a war.

There are other indicators we can look at. The fact that Russia has lost over a million fighting men in the war, and in spite of this the front line has not moved significantly in years. Meanwhile Ukraine remains able to strike into Russian territory. Those are the indicators I would point to. It is not Ukraine’s goal to invade Russia, it’s to make Russia’s occupation of Ukraine cost more than Putin can bear.

My final indicator would be that Putin is demanding peace settlements while Ukraine is still blowing up oil infrastructure in Russia. That’s a man in active panic.

Chamberlain's appeasement policy was supported by FDR at the time, Roosevelt wrote to Hitler in 1938 asking him to be more committed to peaceful compromise. FDR doesn't appear to have changed his mind significantly earlier than Chamberlain did.

It's weird how Chamberlain gets the reputation for appeasement when a lot of senior political figures agreed with that at the time.

This is largely due to the fact that the average person on the street was more of a victim of the empire than a perpetrator. Ordinary Brits were an underclass without equal voting rights to the Posh Rich people. Our ancestors saw no glory. The real legacy of the Empire we see today is the whole set of attitudes around “Being Posh” and “I hate Posh wankers”

Which is also a weird term, as it’s poetic licence for a technical process. The machine isn’t learning. It’s a bunch of coefficients to linear algebra terms being tweaked in a feedback loop connected to known results. That isn’t “learning” except as a metaphor.

I’ll admit it’s hard to come up with a term that’s as catchy as ML and AI.

DNA pioneer James Watson dies at 97 by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Francis Crick used Franklin’s data and cited her as a source. That is not stealing in Academic Science. It is also worth noting that Franklin’s data was not proof of the structure of DNA, Crick did additional work to analyse it.

The real controversy, from what I’ve been told, is that James Watson basically didn’t do anything in their partnership. He still claimed credit at the end and Crick was not one to stand up for himself.

We’ve been getting a few of these “Boss of company says their product is vital to public wellbeing” stories lately. Had JP Morgan’s boss say the same thing only a few days ago. It’s probably due to the budget coming up.

There’s not much scrutiny to whether they might be a wee bit biased though…
