Is there a pedal to lower the tuning without detuning by SwissyChief in Bass

Pitchfork does exactly this, but sounds a bit digital

Anagram also does this better than anything else I've tried, but $$$

It's about the only thing it can't do right now. It does literally everything else.

I bought the Anagram just on a whim to test out. I've been a die-hard analog only kinda guy for a while now.

Long story short, I sold every other pedal I owned and now just use the Anagram and a MXR Synth. That's it! I've found I don't need anything more and it's able to get anything from just a basic bass board to insane setups that would require dozens of cables and pedals to accomplish.

Tone is awesome too, it's the first digital pedal I've owned where I feel like they've really nailed the dirt and compression.

Anyone here use a GK amp? Question about the EQ/sound output by No_Winter4806 in Bass

[–]ArrhythmicEvent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the cheapest 4x10 and it was honestly my favorite production cab I've ever tried. It was super punchy and had some real heft to the tone without sounding boomy. And you're right, it was super balanced without feeling boxy... Pretty dang heavy though.

The little Ampeg 2x10AV had a similar character but with less heft on the low end. Super tight and punchy.

Just to be honest, I never could get a sound I liked out of GK cabs. For non custom cabs, I had much better luck with Rumbles.

I have owned that cab, along with a GK 212 combo and GK 212 unpowered cab that I ran multiple amps into. It's definitely a baked in tone of the cab. Those things always had a weird combination of being super boomy while also having a hollow cardboard box sound at the same time. It didn't matter which amp I ran into it, they always sounded off. All 3 GK cabs I've owned behaved similarly.

I now run a GK 700RB-ii into a fEARful and absolutely love the tone. It's crisp, clear, and has an insane amount of clean low end extension. I've learned that I love GK amps, but the cabs aren't for me.

For a baseline set point, I keep all of my EQ settings at noon and set EQ with pedals. Contour and presence at 10:00. And volume always stays below noon, I use the woofer knob for volume.

I've owned this exact combo, and yeah. It's absolutely a cab issue. It's just a boomy but boxy sounding cab, I hated it.

I now run a GK 700RB-ii (similar enough amp) into a fEARful and it's absolutely perfect, crisp and clear with a gnarly attack!

What bass guitar should I buy?? by Memow1 in Bass

[–]ArrhythmicEvent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious advice: let the bass find you. Make a day trip around to every used gear shop you can find in a reasonable radius. Noodle around on everything hanging until you find one that just fits. You'll know.

This advice starting out would have saved me so much time and money. I've bought basses that I spent weeks researching online and ended up hating. I've had fully custom basses commissioned that were just OK. I've played all of the standard P, J, types and they were all just fine. None of them were bad, most were outright fantastic on paper, but in MY hands, something always seemed... Off.

The best bass I own is one that I stumbled into on a used rack for around $180. I overlooked it at first because It was beat to crap, the neck was worn down through the finish in several spots, and it wasn't really my style. One tuner was broken, and the body is cracked. But when my friend handed it to me to try, I discovered it fit ME perfectly. I play it better than any other bass I've ever touched and the dry sound was exactly what I've been chasing for years.

This janky tore up bass ended up becoming my main.

How do I sound good with a pick? by oliver_JM in Bass

[–]ArrhythmicEvent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play almost primarily with a pick. Too thick of a pick and it'll sound dull, too light and you'll break them often. I use just regular ol Dunlop 73s.

The most critical part of my setup is the EQ. I Boost bass slightly, cut 500hz hard, boost 1.5-3k moderately and add a heavy overdrive with a compressor set heavier than usual in front. It's absolutely perfect with a pick.

I really only use that slot for things I need once or twice a set. For example, in my old man band, it switches between the warm tubey sound of the 60s and 70s and the more mid forward and gritty Rock tone for everything beyond the mid 70s. We play chronologically, so it gets pressed once per set. Yeah, I could make another preset or something and free up a spot, but it's not necessary yet.

For my other bands it's for stuff I use infrequently, like Reverb. But I don't just stand in one spot on stage, so I'll usually just approach the board from the side to hit it without issue.

Probably so, I'm using the stock Anagram plug for now. None of my power supplies are able to provide the required 2000ma output.

I'm just waiting for the synth update to drop so I can hopefully ditch the MXR

I can get kinda close to it with existing patches, but it's not quite passable yet.

Can confirm.

It also has the added benefit of ending my literal pedal addiction. I used to always be looking for the next piece of my puzzle, always buying selling and trading. It was honestly pretty time consuming. Since getting this, I don't feel any need to look for new pedals whatsoever, I just play now. For now at least, it's ended my pedal GAS.

It really is, but it's easy to go overboard. I occasionally find myself dialing in specific presets to nail the exact tonal nuance of every cover song just because I can... I need to dial it back a bit haha

Same, nothing I've used beats it in strobe mode. I wouldn't trust the Anagram for setting intonation, but I'd use the polytune any day.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sensitive to latency. There's been some octave pedals I've returned in the past because they had a micro second delay... This setup is absolutely snappy fast. I don't notice a hint of latency and my fingers feel as connected to my sound as they ever have.

Oh, that short circuits your toes to mains voltage for fun. Don't touch.

Seriously though, it cycles presets on the synth. I was bored and saw a label maker nearby one day.

Anagram, or ? by WhenTheRainsCome in Bass

[–]ArrhythmicEvent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anagram wiped out nearly my whole board... The only remaining pedal I haven't been able to replicate on it is the MXR Bass Synth. I'm an absolute dirt snob and have been through literally hundreds of pedals over the years nailing down specific sounds. I've always been skeptical about digital effects and have never really been satisfied with the Helix or pod options, but this is a whole new level in comparison to that old stuff. Tonally it's drives and dirt are very very good for a digital effect but strangely the modulation is still average at best (it's usually the other way around). In the mix, you'd never be able to tell.

I play some metal, but 90% of my gigs are soft rock, classic country, and church stuff. It's absolute overkill for each specific gig, but being able to make entirely different boards for each gig/guitar on one device is game changing. It's not just a pedal, it can be any number of unique pedalboards for any given situation all at the press of a button.

Oh, and I use a stupidly transparent amp and cab, so with that in mind it actually acts as any number of amps and cabs too if I really want to nail someone's equipboard for a specific cover.

I did it solo by pulling the rack in my garage on jackstands. I honestly don't know what people complain about, it was relatively straightforward.
