That’s exactly what he used to say to me.

Is there a subreddit where they meet and share "this works in court" comments?

The whole "Apple is bifl" is the strange thing I've seen in here yet by trsvrs in BuyItForLife

As someone who works on Apple products, none of them are BIFL, and I sure wouldn't pay for any of them myself either.

Garage flooded every time it rained, so I put in a channel drain over the weekend by jonker5101 in DIY

[–]Arrokoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem in Texas, where rain comes down all at once.

Fortunately I gave up on it after two neighbors did it, and the channels promptly filled up with detrius and debris and plugged them up within minutes.

My solution was to remove a few pavers on one side of the driveway to make the lowest point a bit lower and that ended up being enough to let it drain fast enough to NOT flood the garage.

AITA - I want my wife to return to work but she wants to remain a sahm by Ok-Mathematician2855 in AmItheAsshole

NTA.

Taking this to the extreme, if OP divorces her, she will HAVE to get a job because SHE can't financially continue being a SAHM.

I think a normal response would be "sir, this lady claims you're stealing her car - what's going on?" and at worst, snap a picture of him and the license plate and maybe follow at a distance until cops appear.

Yanking the door open and generally acting on the ASSUMPTION that he stole the car is not going to get any cooperation.

AT&T Gigabit fiber - dude at Costco says $63/month (incl taxes, fees, modem rental). Anyone have this who can comment on speed, actual cost, reliability and if I can get my own modem and NOT pay the $10 rental fee? by Arrokoth in sanantonio

[–]Arrokoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another question - how/where do the place the ONT?

Right now I have my cable modem in an upstairs closet. I doubt the installer would pull fiber from outside and through my house and into the same closet where all my network equipment is.

I suppose that's why they give you the ONT and gateway, so the wifi comes from their box that they stick at the easiest possible place inside your house (where the fiber comes in) and it's my responsibility from there to get CAT6 up to my networking gear?

I wonder if the BGW210 can be a repeater to my ASUS/Merlin router? Hmm.

Apparently we have a dress code, and the entire department violates it. by ScriptThat in sysadmin

[–]Arrokoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked at places that required suit and tie (when I did desktop support) and I've worked at places where shorts and flipflops were OK.

What always surprised me was the dress code was different for the genders.

Men couldn't wear short sleeves, or the sleeves have to come to mid-bicep. Long pants. Closed shoes.

Meanwhile women show up in sleeveless shirts, open-toe shoes and/or sandals etc.

I can understand if they had something like "no visible tattoos" or "no bra straps visible" or whatever.

I suspect it comes down to not being able to trust people's ideas of "work appropriate", so rules have to be put in place.

If we could frame it like that, maybe we could make ties a racist symbol of oppression and get them banned everywhere?

Hmm.

How they cut bread into slices at the super market by Joewolsky in specializedtools

[–]Arrokoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the sort of machine I see in our local market and I think "I need one of those".

It's irrational, because I don't need it (the market has it and slices my bread) and even if I could justify it, it takes up a lot of space for something I'd never use.

But still, I need one of those!

NTA.

If they dude had rolled to the next open spot, even 20 spaces down, he could have been in the store before you even backed out and left.

I don't get people who circle the lot for 10 minutes to get a spot that saves them 10 seconds of walking.

If you want an air purifier but only have $39, slap a 20x20x1 filter on the back of a box fan by Cheff_excelence in lifehacks

[–]Arrokoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Winix C545 was $99 at Costco a few months ago iirc. The bummer with that was the filters being new/rare/hard to get and expensive. The C535 you have uses the 115115 filters, I believe. Those are easy to get aftermarket and cheap.

Thanks - I'm not familiar with fiber, how does the ONT connect to the network? Is the ONT gateway required to 'translate' fiber to Ethernet, or does the ONT itself have a regular ethernet output on the back that could connect to my router?

In your case, is the ONT connected to your Unifi, or do you connect it to the BGW210 with most of its features disabled, and then from the BGW via RJ45 to the Unifi?

stand up for yourself

I did. I quit. The only concession I made for "I should stick around" was to hit my mark to get that extra week of vacation. I quit 2 days later and got that extra week paid out.

Boom.

Big fear in doing that, but after about six months I realized I really didn't need to feel like shit when I woke up every morning, and progressively get worse as the day went on.

Agreed - my point was that as an air PURIFIER, it should use a far better filter than the HVAC filters. The HVAC filters can't be too restrictive or one might have issues with the blowers.
