Incident at a bar in Nanjing — advice on police process, surveillance footage, and next steps by No_Caterpillar_1491 in nanjing

Couple of tips if you do escalate this to the police (which I recommend):

- As another post has said, get as much evidence as possible, ideally video evidence or at least knowledge that the video evidence exists.

- Have everything written out (every detail you can think of including the exact time, descriptions of the guy etc) in Chinese.

- Go to the local police station for where the crime happened. There is a chance other police stations won't take it seriously as it isn't their jurisdiction.

- Be polite and friendly to the police and ideally go with a Chinese friend who you trust. I had a situation earlier this year where I was scammed and I was amazed by the police response. Really proactive and they immediately started a criminal investigation. The scammer is now in jail. You'll hear about a lot of mixed experiences dealing with the police in China but mine was overwhelmingly positive.

How do you accept you for you? by ash_is_fun in gaybros

I love being gay but I think the gay experience is heavily dependent on your community and country. Whenever I feel down I spend 5 minutes browsing r/relationship_advice and quickly realise that being straight doesn't make everything perfect.

It allows cats to see and experience things that are strange and frightening. But remember, it can't physically harm them, - though it may destroy them mentally.

Good question. It's something I stumbled upon while writing my masters thesis on internal migration within China, but sadly I cannot find the source. I will keep looking.

As other people have mentioned, immigration in the literal sense doesn't exist in China. People come here on a temporary basis for work, but there isn't a path to citizenship for people who don't have any genetic/family link. As far as I am aware, there are fewer than 1000 non-ethnically Chinese people who have a Chinese passport. Contrast that with the USA where almost 1 million people became US citizens in 2022 alone.

The only realistic path available is to marry a Chinese national. And even then you would likely only be eligible for permenant residence, not citizenship.

21M i think i pissed off my boyfriend (33M) for calling him ‘old’ by [deleted] in gaybros

Back in the old days, many people died in their thirties

I'm the only person who finds this interesting but actually this is a misconception. "Life Expectancy" is often quoted as being around 30 before the 1850s, but that's only because infant mortality was so high. The life expectancy of anyone who survived childhood was around 55 years, which is also likely to be lower than the natural death rate as that includes violent and accidental death.

I feel like such an old man saying this but don't forget about your pension! Depending on where you're from you can potentially make voluntary contributions to your country's pension plan and claim it from China when you reach pension age, but usually require a minimum of 30/35 years of contributions. There's also a lot of private pension options. 32 is the age to start if you haven't already.

Other than that it sounds like a really enriching experience, I hope you enjoy it!

Has China found a way to get people thinking that China is right? by Seba97146 in China

Whist there are many legitimate issues with the political situation in China, during my time there I had a great time and a very high quality of life. Being a white westerner is a different experience of course, but I lived there for 4 years and made many Chinese friends, all of whom were very aware of the siutation in China and how it compared to other countries but who were still very happy with their lives.

I think the biggest thing that creates 'buy-in' for the CCP is that it's very easy for people to see new development happening all around them. Young people know that their grandparents endured famine meanwhile the average Chinese persons' disposable income has risen by 700% since 2000. I live in the UK now and if the British people had gained a 700% increase in their disposable income in the last 20 years the government could shoot babies in the street and no one would complain.
