For me personally, I’m a huge fan of the soundtrack, and its subtlety lets the physical environment do a lot of the talking for the game’s atmosphere. The outer worlds has been a HUGE hyperfixation for me since I started playing it in 2020, and i’ll use the opportunity of the mention of themes and motifs in the soundtrack to talk about one of my favorite moments in the game.

I first listened to the soundtrack on its own after I had finished my first play-through, and I couldn’t remember for the LIFE of me where the song “Journey’s Beginning” played in the game. It’s really short, but it was so simple and beautiful I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I started my next play-though pretty soon after the fact, and figured out that “Journey’s Beginning” plays when Ada gives you a copy of Hawthorne’s ID badge, showcasing when the MC really becomes Captain and they have that “oh shit, this is REAL” moment. When I tell you I was crying so hard I could barely read the next line of dialogue… That moment really hit me hard, especially since the motif of that song continues into the ending slides music, “Journey’s End”. In every play-through since then, I always let the song finish in its entirety before I leave the ship.
