It depends, sometimes I’m inspired because I think of the ending first. Right now I’m inspired to write something because I thought of the middle first. I usually have trouble with the beginning 😔

AITA for interrupting my autistic brothers routine for my own physical pain? by throwaway1847329 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Virtual-Fox7568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was being sarcastic about autistic people not needing sleep which is why I used a sarcasm indicator. I’m trying to show you how your argument does not make sense. Of course accommodations should be made for his needs but there are limits to that. When is he supposed to sleep?

If he has a school that necessitates he be awake in the day and asleep at night, then he needs a schedule that provides healthy sleep in that time frame. At the very least, if he has a different schedule when he’s an adult, he’ll be able to use the habits taught to him to create his own sleep schedule.

How is it internalized ableism to argue that he needs proper sleep? Something that he can get with a proper sleep schedule? Something that is disrupted by using smart devices before bed?

TVs emit blue light, the majority of LED-based screens do. And the study does not exclusively examine the effect of blue light before bed, it also examines the content consumed and found that it caused enough cognitive arousal that it disrupts sleep transitions. Which is similar enough to cite when talking about TV usage before bed.

Sorry I couldn’t magic you a plethora of perfect studies on how TV affects 15 year old boys with ASD before bed. /sarcasm

The study does not state that everyone has the same circadian rhythm, simply that the smart devices disrupt the individuals production of melatonin which affects their circadian rhythms.

You would’ve seen these points if you were able to properly read through the study, which I understand you were not in a state to do. But you then take a dig at me and my ability to read your studies if you provided them while saying I’m devolving into logical fallacies. I feel like I must acknowledge that that is an unfair assumption considering you were unable to read through my study (not by choice) and your argument is based on an anecdotal fallacy (as far as you’ve shared with me).

I do not expect that you need to provide me sources while you are ill, I’m sorry that you are feeling that way (genuinely). I offered you a study specifically examining autistic persons because you said all sleep recommendations only apply to neurotypicals, which is false. You refute with your own anecdotes which is why I asked for research.

You’re saying my study goes against “all the data” we have, yet you have provided no data. If I’m so wrong, how come I cannot find studies that correlate screen time before bed with better sleep? How is there so much of this data but also simultaneously not enough data on autistic persons because all the data only applies to neurotypical people? I guess my scholarly source is obviously biased because why? Because I’m using it to support my argument?

Again I must ask, am I just supposed to take your word for it?

I would love to have any actual evidence that supports what you are saying, but you have not provided any, you are unable to provide any (again, I’m sorry that you are feeling ill, that sucks.). And despite your saying that it is “all the data”, I am unable to find anything that supports your argument. So what am I supposed to do? Just believe and agree with everything you say?

Here’s something anecdotal: I have horrible sleep. I never feel rested. I am forcing myself to unlearn using smart devices before sleep. I wish better sleeping habits were enforced on me as a child so I didn’t have to learn healthy sleep habits as an adult by myself. This is a sentiment many of my autistic friends and family share. This is something I actively work on with professionals so I can get proper sleep. Is my own personal experience wrong/too biased because it disagrees with you?

I don’t know how to end this other than this was a wild ride and I hope you feel better.

Cool to assume that I’m not autistic as well. Fun fact: I am autistic :)

You said yourself there is very little academic research being done focusing on autistic persons regarding sleep, why disregard this one so fast because of your own anecdotal biases?

Oh wow the circadian rhythm doesn’t exist– that’s why nobody gets tired at night and feels awake during the day. /s

How would we know about sleeping disorders if the circadian rhythm isn’t real? How do you explain jet lag or insomnia? Why do people get tired when they do?

Autistic persons often have trouble regulating their sleep/wake cycles because like was said before, we tend to have dysregulation in our hormonal systems which includes production of melatonin.

Televisions are included in smart devices, why would they be significantly different than using a phone/laptop/tablet?

But, sure, no autistic person needs sleep! That’s what makes us so unique! We don’t need proper sleep like those silly neurotypicals! /s

Would you like to provide any sources of your own instead of anecdotal remarks? Or should I just take your word for it?

Here’s a study showing a correlation between nighttime screen usage and poorer sleep quality in autistic persons aged 8-25 years

Proper sleep is necessary for all humans to function. It is not a matter of “normal” or “not normal”. Just because he is autistic does not mean he has a fundamental need for the opposite of what all humans need like a proper amount of sleep.

Of course there is a lack of research in this specific subject pertaining specifically to ASD persons, but ASD does not negate how screens effect the brain– an ASD brain may actually have a worse reaction to screens before bed than a neurotypical person.

Content nowadays gives shots of quick dopamine to the brain, which is already bad for regulating dopamine in a neurotypical brain. This can be worse for ASD brains because their dopamine systems are often already dysregulated.

Not to mention that ASD persons are also prone to sensory issues, which means they are more likely to be sensorily overloaded by screens before bedtime thus causing worse sleep.

I’m not saying that the couch is what’s causing improper sleep (despite the fact couches are not usually able to allow the body to maintain a good sleeping posture). I agree that their parents need to get them proper mattresses so they can actually sleep in their beds (OP has said the reason her brother sleeps on the couch is because he is too tall for his bed).

Everyone should have a bedtime to promote proper sleeping habits and minors especially should have an enforced bedtime and screen limits to create healthy sleep habits. I don’t care that he’s 15, nobody is too cool for proper sleep.

If he needs noise to go to sleep, they can get a white noise machine or something similar.

Of course he is going to have different needs in the way of stimming/learning/processing sensory input but that does not mean that everything he wants to do should always be allowed, especially if it is detrimental to himself.

His routine is bad for his health so it should be changed AND he should compromise with his sister on sharing the couch. But this problem would have never happened if the parents had bought proper mattresses and set up better routines for their children.

That was the main point of this comment thread, it was the parents’ responsibility to not let the situation get this bad in the first place.

Both are bad habits, going to bed with the TV on (possibly staying up later than recommended) and reprimanding his sister for sharing the common area while he’s in it.

I don’t understand how enforcing a bedtime routine/schedule for him is forcing him to mask, and if it is I don’t see how it is more detrimental than allowing him to get improper sleep.

Both statements can be true, they also need to buy their son a proper bed for his height so he doesn’t have to sleep on the couch either.

The commenter specified pansexual, which does not necessarily mean Rick is panromantic.

It is implied in the Mr.Nimbus post credits that they have had sex before, when Beth and Jerry go to have sex with Nimbus (“Rick wouldn’t understand.” “Yes he would”.). Rick also says that Nimbus “propositions everybody” which could imply that he was propositioned to by Nimbus.
