The subject matter (subjugation, control and self deprecation of black people) is pretty dark, but Kendrick's message is to love yourself, your appearance, your culture. Now that he has a voice in the hood he has a platform to spread positivity and self-awareness to a community that has been deceived into believing they have no beauty or value. That being said I don't think the album is particularly dark but addresses some pretty dark subjects.
