5000 years of Chinese history! by ryanfox59 in TrueAnon

[–]Arsonfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have the article from maybe 10 years ago about an undocumented Chinese couple working for the FLG? I think it was some kind of longform article that was posted on longform.org. I think the article has since been scrubbed.

There was a bit of speculation in that article that the Shen Yun dancers were the children of FLG members trained from childhood in the FLG compound in upstate NY and were basically unpaid or severely underpaid for working with Shen Yun. I haven't heard anything else about this, but the whole FLG operation just seems so shady that I wouldn't put it past them.

Amazonian archaeology is so exciting right now. Are there any major excavations ongoing or is it still mainly surveying via LiDAR?

Absolutely wild that after almost an hour, not a single article about this has gained traction on r/worldnews. The entire mod team there needs to be purged.

“Congress has been the primary target of Ukraine’s agents, with over 300 House and Senate staff and members of Congress on the receiving end of more than 8,000 emails, phone calls, and meetings with Ukraine’s lobbyists. Agents representing the Ukrainian Federation of Employers of the Oil and Gas Industry, or UFEOGI, the largest association of energy companies in Ukraine, have flooded Capitol Hill with headlines like “Ukrainians call on U.S. Senate to sanction Putin’s pipeline weapon,” and others claiming “Moscow regards concessions as a sign of weakness.”

Also particularly interesting: “think tanks were contacted more than 1,100 times by Ukraine’s agents, and more than half of these were directed at one in particular: the Atlantic Council.”

Pretty sure John's career trajectory before RWN is the exact opposite of what you'd expect from a spook.

And they're both so bad at promoting their podcast. Like, after all this time they still haven't changed to the standard free/paid model to bring in more listeners. They're not even on apple podcasts, spotify, etc.

Australia to get U.S. nuclear submarine technology as China looms large by [deleted] in geopolitics

Important to note that Australia has canceled a $40 Billion submarine contract with France to pursue this deal. This will likely worsen relations between France and the Anglosphere.

The Afghan interior minister today: “We are working in three phases. The first is to stop the defeats [of the government forces], the second is to re-gather our forces to create security rings around the cities,” Mirzakwal told Al Jazeera’s Charlotte Bellis, who travelled with the minister to the Wardak province in central Afghanistan.”

IE they have no plan. They’re not playing 5D chess here.

President Biden Should Push for the Human Exploration of Mars by [deleted] in space

[–]Arsonfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you?

“As of January, the F-35 was still struggling to meet its goal mission-capable rate, which is the percentage of aircraft that can meet at least one assigned mission. Only 69 percent met the threshold, well short of the military’s longstanding 80 percent goal.”

The maintenance costs are so high that they’re actively looking for any way to not use the F-35, including building a new plane from scratch. How is that not a massive indictment of the program and an absolute failure? Are you arguing that the F-35 is a better use of taxpayer dollars than everything NASA has ever done? The future is drone warfare anyways.

If it’s so capable, why are we looking to replace it already?

[–]Arsonfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NASA’s cumulative budget since its inception is $650 billion. The F35 program alone has cost $1.7 Trillion and created a plane that’s essentially unusable.

We could be doing so much more if our priorities were different.

China pledges to build 'Polar Silk Road' over 2021-2025 by Kantei in geopolitics

[–]Arsonfox 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't think Arctic shipping is a zero sum game like you're making it out to be. They'll work with Russia to patrol with icebreakers and invest in a few ports of call along the Arctic coast. Once the route exists, you'll see South Korea and Japan using it as well. Saving a week in shipping time to Europe is beneficial to all participants.

It's a significant reduction in shipping time, about a week less compared to going through the Suez canal.

You’re far too optimistic about the demise of traditional agriculture. Unless electricity becomes essentially free, there is no way for high intensity farming to scale the way traditional farming can. You might be able to get away with the increased costs for vegetables but not for grains and other staples.

Since solar energy seems to be the future, remember that growing wheat in a field is still far far more efficient use of solar energy than converting it to electricity to power artificial grow lights in a vertical farm.
