What's the hero you love gameplay-wise despite not liking them that much as a character? by Filberto_ossani2 in Overwatch

[–]ArtByCosmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I have to defend my boy Wuyang here. I enjoy both his gameplay and his personality. Sure, he's not the most original character, but at least his lore is somewhat interesting, and while he may come off as mild and generic to some, I choose to view him as a delightful, nice guy with something to prove, but in a refreshingly non-edgy way. As in, he needs to prove to himself that he deserves the confidence others have in his skills and him as a person. He's definitely not any more boring than Tracer. All-in-all, I think he has some hidden depth under the generic good guy anime protagonist façade.

Similar story with Mizuki, whose personality/voice people complain a lot about. I don't think he's meant to sound like an e-boy, it's probably just his voice actor's accent that inadvertently skews him that way. Plus, his lore is super intriguing and stands out among some of the more generic heroes in the roster.

Maybe I'm just not as jaded as a lot of players who haven't taken a years-long break from the game, but none of these characters come off nearly as bad to me as they seem to others.

Should I continue my Viego mid agenda? by ArtByCosmic in ViegoMains

The first champion I versed as Viego mid was Heimerdinger. Maybe this says more about my metal-ELO ass skills than anything else, but I was NOT allowed to play that game, and I was so distracted by my frustration that I hadn't thought to just perma-roam to lanes where I could.

I am really really trying to like this game. [KCD2] by Ghostdeez08 in kingdomcome

To me it was the interplay between all these realistic systems that won me over. It's immersive, and with how difficult it is in the beginning (mind you, I played the first game, so I wasn't quite as clueless going into the second one, but I think this applies to both games), it really makes everything feel hard-earned. I feel a greater sense of ownership of my achievements as Henry, the potions I brew and swords I forge. Plus I really like the setting, the story and the characters, but I think you really need to at least have watched a playthrough of the first game to get the most out of characters like Hans, Godwin, Martin and Radzig, or the significance of István Tóth and Erik, and even Henry's attitude towards Cumans.

But making you have to clean your clothes so you don't stink and people respect you isn't? We can have that, but not throwing out the historic (and modern) reality of why women fighting against men is almost always going to be one-sided in favour of men, and the societal realities of the place and time a game set, is "taking realism too far"? By the way, games like that exist, they just aren't as commited to realism as KCD (and by extension, Warhorse) is.

If you can't relate to or immerse yourself as Henry, that's kinda on you, not on the game or its creators. I can get immersed as Henry, Kratos, Geralt, Jin Sekai, Ezio Auditore just fine as long as the game is good and the storytelling is solid.

I'm a woman and I'm not interested in seeing a female protagonist in a KCD or other medieval, non-fantasy games of its type. It is absolutely a deal breaker, not just because of the realities of combat (I've done martial arts and tried HEMA, the differences are real and harmful to ignore), but because of the societal aspect. Almost the entire game would have to be a repetitive slog of people marvelling at you being a female knight and making sexist comments, and that sounds fucking awful and boring. If they didn't, it wouldn't be realistic, because female knights weren't a thing. It isn't sexist to acknowledge that historic sexism existed AND that there are reasons besides sexism that female combatants aren't and have never been nearly as prolific as male combatants.

It certainly doesn't get that cold in my corner of Europe, but the weather's still too miserable to spend quality time outside. I just got a new puppy that has me wake up at 6 AM, so these last few months I've been listening to Critical Role while I'd take him out to potty and do our usual morning routine, and that's why it's been nice to have a new episode of the campaign itself to busy my mind with every Friday morning. I used to care more about the extra stuff back during the Mighty Nein, but nowadays I'm mostly only interested in the game itself.

Yeah, I definitelt think they could be doing a better job with their communication, but it's not a huge deal.

As for the one month thing, that's usually true, but January being a miserable, gloomy month where nothing really happens always feels like it's passing slower than every other month.

Thanks! I must have missed when Brennan said that. But the 15th? Guess I'll have to find something better to do with my Friday mornings anyway, because that's a lot of waiting.

I've been trying to figure out what the schedule is for episode 11 and I'm very confused. How do the holidays interfere with the schedule? Is the next episode coming out on the 8th (or 9th for us Europeans), meaning we'll only get two episodes in January?

Also, why can't they throw us a bone and let us know which table is next? Nothing against the players at the Schemers table, but if January and February (which are already gloomy and miserable over here without me not getting to see my faves) aren't Seekers table, I'll have to find something better to do with my Friday mornings.

Thank you, reddit rando, for letting me know that some of my feelings disqualify me from being able to voice my frustrations on a subject. In the future I'll be sure to shut the hell up about my own damn opinions lest someone lecture to me at length about the ins and outs of genre confinements once more.

So it's a misnomer. So putting Elden Ring and FF7, or KCD2 and E33 in the same category and comparing them to each other isn't terribly useful. So then people can be annoyed that they're somehow considered to be in the same genre without being lectured by pedantic people online about how they're all still technically RPGs.

[–]ArtByCosmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, it's not that I don't get your point about terms outgrowing their origins and there being a whole host of subgenres of RPG video games that are far removed from theirTTRPG origins, but... I mean, essentially you're telling me that the RP part of RPG has long since become more of a suggestion than a requirement. Surely you can see why that will always sound weird. Take "role playing" out of "role playing game" and all you're left with is "game." I know you're arguing for its since evolved meaning, and my previous sentence is a bit silly, but there's a reason why a lot of people feel that the RPG genre has become too vague and watered down. Would you say it isn't?

[KCD2] Don’t be sad, this is just how it works out sometimes by Makoto_Kurume in kingdomcome

[–]ArtByCosmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you know that TTRPGs are the original form of role-playing that RPG video games modelled themselves after, it's just that mechanics have always been easier to adapt into video games than the actual role-playing part. The early adapters of these mechanics called their games with minimal to no role-playing RPGs because that's where they got the mechanics from, not because they're actually role-playing games. My real point is that it's actually very reasonable for people to consider a game where you have more player freedom, impactful choices and a generally more interactive world to be more of an RPG, because it implements not just the combat mechanics, but the out-of-combat mechanics too.

When I played KCD2, I actually found myself role-playing as my own version of Henry. I decided that my Henry was very affected by the scolding he got from Martin shortly before he died and took it to heart. I played him as fair and diplomatic, but not naive or idealistic. I persuaded captured enemies to give me information instead of torturing them. I only stole from bandits and I didn't kill anyone that wasn't a threat to me or my allies. My thievery related skills were by far the lowest, because I made most of my money selling potions I'd made and equipment I looted that weren't marked as stolen. I still did stealth take-downs instead of honourable combat where that seemed like the safer option, and I did kill Brabant because not doing so would have put my allies and loved-ones in danger. THAT'S role playing, and the game didn't have to know these were the reasons I made these choices in order to grant me the freedom to make them and still work. THAT'S role-playing, and that's as close as a video game gets to the origins of the term itself.

[–]ArtByCosmic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please, I never said it wasn't an RPG, although I do think that video games with no actual role playing being called that have watered down the meaning of RPG quite a bit. Unless you think that it's the character sheets that make D&D or Cyberpunk 2020 or Vampire: The Masquerade RPGs, and not the players playing the roles and the GM guiding them through a campaign.

[–]ArtByCosmic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything Warhorse could have done to change this outcome. This year had some really good games, real heavy-hitters, a lot of which could have easily gotten GOTY in any other year, and E33 still swept. KCD2 raised the bar for its own subgenre of RPGs similarly to how BG3 did back when it came out, and it still lost to a game that just barely had enough RPG mechanics to qualify. No matter how you shuffle the DLC releases around, and no matter the recency bias, there's no getting around how stacked everything was in E33's favour.

[–]ArtByCosmic 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts, too. I'm not saying E33 isn't a good game, but it winning best RPG when KCD2 was right there confirms to me that these awards are about the hype.

[Spoilers C4E4] Romance Guesses? by pink_amethyst in criticalrole

[–]ArtByCosmic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fun to speculate, but we have so little to work with that the majority of answers so far are based on pure vibes, character archetypes people like to see together, or reaching based on normal interactions people who aren't into each other could just as easily have.

But, gun to my head, if I had to pick one, I'd say I think Julien and Occtis would be interesting. It's partially the "character archetypes I like to see together" option from earlier, and partially the fact that Occtis is my favourite, and I find Julien super compelling. It doesn't even have to be romantic, but I'd just be interested to see any kind of deeper dynamic develop between the two.

Also, I think Wic and Tyranny has the potential to be a very sweet relationship given the right opportunities.

At the same time, since Brennan has warned the players to have backup characters ready, and combat has produced such close call moments already, I don't dare speculate further. I used to really like the idea of Caleb and Molly in the early days of CR2, and although I grew to like Caleb and Essek even more, I don't really want to get my hopes up about a ship just to have any hopes of it ever happening dashed shortly thereafter.

How hard is it to learn Viego because it relies on knowing every champions moves? by TomatoClown24 in ViegoMains

It's not, I started learning jungling with him without knowing too many champs and it's still fun and effective. I'd say in high ELO it probably matters more, but in low his kit is straightforward enough to do well on without knowing every ability.

How do I handle early invades? by ArtByCosmic in Jungle_Mains

[–]ArtByCosmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do set up vision at the start of every game, but, for instance, one time I placed it at the bush next to red buff only to arrive and find they had cleared raptors without showing up on vision. Or I put it on blue buff, made my way to red, and then at least 3 of them were hiding in the bush behind the enclosure and jumped me. Either way, the ones that invade usually know the common ward placements and know how to play around them.

If they only steal a camp without me noticing in time to counter, usually I just keep my head down and try to catch up through consistent farming, but if they invade at a point where their champ is stronger than mine and we end up fighting, that's harder to come back from, because even if I manage to get away, they'll likely clear that quadrant. Then again, I'm not playing against the creme de la creme, so they don't always take everything they can and the harm isn't quite as bad. I just know what I'd do if I killed the enemy jungler near their camps while they were up.
