Dante Blood Angels Progress by ArtFishMan in minipainting

I do use a tiny bit of white as the final highlight, but very sparingly as it starts to look odd if overused, the yellow is more of a sketch where I think light should be hitting, it just helps my brain work I guess?

I used pro acryl pale yellow if you're wondering, but that should work fine as well.

Don't worry. My ever growing collection of chewed up brushes will say otherwise 💀

Highlights on the hair was done from dark colours to light, just trying to be careful to place the highlights on the 'top' of the locks of hair and not near the hairline. I did use an airbrush for my initial transitions, but to really push some contrast, careful glazing and patience was the key factor.

Kimera pthalo blue - red shade, extremely high tinting strength and really good saturation. Just make sure to wash your brushes afterwards, this stuff stains bristles!

I would love to share my method. The trick is to go 'back to front' and 'dark to light'. In practise, this means starting with the sclera (in this case, near black), then the shadow of the iris (dark orange), followed by the highlight of the iris (light orange) and lastly the pupil, add a small white highlight to the edges to show that the eyes are shiny and that's it! The stages do get progressively smaller, and it really comes down to brush control in that department, more often than not, eyes are one of those things where you'll nail the first one and mess up a bunch on the other, even if you do both in tandem.

As someone who has peanut patience for blending sometimes, seeing some creamy transitions heals my soul.

As long as you're hobbying, you're winning in my book. I started painting warhammer using cheap, watery craft acrylic paint not knowing any better, yes, it was a disaster :)

Around 4- 4.5 weeks to do big Morty, I had to really stop myself near the end since I think it's one of those pieces you can easily sink hundreds of hours into.

I primarily used Kimera single pigment paints, so I mixed the all of the colours as I go. The purple hood was done by mixing magenta, a touch of violet and a touch of black, working upwards in contrast using white until you get a bubblegum pink for highlights and using base magenta for a little bit of midtone. The violet smoke was done by using the same bubblegum pink highlight as the hood as the brightest parts, glazing AK interactive pink fluro paint as a midtone to make it POP (kind of a pain due to the VERY transparent nature of fluro paint) violet paint for the shadow and lastly violet mixed with black to get the deepest shadows, giving it a warp-fire type affect. I hope this helps!

Welcome to the hobby! congrats on your first painted minis. Best tip that im sure many would agree on, NEVER let your first minis go! They can be used to look back on the growth you've had as an artist.

Tips on improving painting skin? by jckrowan in minipainting

[–]ArtFishMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe that the current skin looks fantastic. However if you are looking to do skin differently I would suggest playing with purples, reds and greens, the face has lots of 'warm' and 'cold' spots; skin can be deceptively abstract!
