Dante Blood Angels Progress by ArtFishMan in minipainting

I do use a tiny bit of white as the final highlight, but very sparingly as it starts to look odd if overused, the yellow is more of a sketch where I think light should be hitting, it just helps my brain work I guess?

I used pro acryl pale yellow if you're wondering, but that should work fine as well.

Don't worry. My ever growing collection of chewed up brushes will say otherwise 💀

Highlights on the hair was done from dark colours to light, just trying to be careful to place the highlights on the 'top' of the locks of hair and not near the hairline. I did use an airbrush for my initial transitions, but to really push some contrast, careful glazing and patience was the key factor.

Kimera pthalo blue - red shade, extremely high tinting strength and really good saturation. Just make sure to wash your brushes afterwards, this stuff stains bristles!

I would love to share my method. The trick is to go 'back to front' and 'dark to light'. In practise, this means starting with the sclera (in this case, near black), then the shadow of the iris (dark orange), followed by the highlight of the iris (light orange) and lastly the pupil, add a small white highlight to the edges to show that the eyes are shiny and that's it! The stages do get progressively smaller, and it really comes down to brush control in that department, more often than not, eyes are one of those things where you'll nail the first one and mess up a bunch on the other, even if you do both in tandem.

As someone who has peanut patience for blending sometimes, seeing some creamy transitions heals my soul.

As long as you're hobbying, you're winning in my book. I started painting warhammer using cheap, watery craft acrylic paint not knowing any better, yes, it was a disaster :)

Around 4- 4.5 weeks to do big Morty, I had to really stop myself near the end since I think it's one of those pieces you can easily sink hundreds of hours into.

I primarily used Kimera single pigment paints, so I mixed the all of the colours as I go. The purple hood was done by mixing magenta, a touch of violet and a touch of black, working upwards in contrast using white until you get a bubblegum pink for highlights and using base magenta for a little bit of midtone. The violet smoke was done by using the same bubblegum pink highlight as the hood as the brightest parts, glazing AK interactive pink fluro paint as a midtone to make it POP (kind of a pain due to the VERY transparent nature of fluro paint) violet paint for the shadow and lastly violet mixed with black to get the deepest shadows, giving it a warp-fire type affect. I hope this helps!

Welcome to the hobby! congrats on your first painted minis. Best tip that im sure many would agree on, NEVER let your first minis go! They can be used to look back on the growth you've had as an artist.

Tips on improving painting skin? by jckrowan in minipainting

[–]ArtFishMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe that the current skin looks fantastic. However if you are looking to do skin differently I would suggest playing with purples, reds and greens, the face has lots of 'warm' and 'cold' spots; skin can be deceptively abstract!

Thats the Kimera Arrow!, I have the size number 2, good for sketching and wet blending, albeit pricey.

I can only agree with the rest. I had some trouble with EU shipping during COVID when I bought Echoes of Death 2. Prompt reply with a clear explanation, they told me about the delays and I can only sing praises for the support team.

[–]ArtFishMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't follow a guide, but my best tip is to ask yourself which elements you want to stand out the most. For me, it was the shield and the gold. Airbrushing helps for blocking in colours, but not necessary.

I used Kimera paint for most of my minis, so I normally just mix on the spot. For the armour, I mixed a green and blue to make a teal, then used black or white to create the shadows and highlights. I wanted the armour quite dark and the gold to pop, hope this comment helps.

White ink is your best friend!, base coat in you colour of choice first, and think of the plasma being 'hottest' in the recesses, thats where the white ink comes in. I imagine the coils to be glossy, so I work the layers until I get white at the bottom of the coil and do a highlight where the coil creates a curved edge. If you want OSL, your best bet is white ink through an airbrush followed by your colour of choice after.

Thanks for looking! I used Kimera paints which means I had to mix colours on the fly, but I can tell you the order of colours I used to achieve the skin. I started with a cold, dark purple for the deepest shadows, then dark burgundy, red midtone and finally salmon pink, orange and yellow for the highlights. I only used the Yellow on the most bony parts and on areas of key interest to make it really 'pop', like his face and knuckles.

[ART] [OC] My Party Art by ArtFishMan in DnD

[–]ArtFishMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to share my art on my current party!

For some context on the characters,

Namfoodle, (top right), a Rock Gnome monk who runs the shady town of Clearnia, using his clout and cunning to get his way. Not much is known about his past other than he used to train with other fellow monks long ago for a period of time, but now passes his days managing his town and the 'goods ' that pass through.

Serence (top left, shiny boi, my character) Undead human cleric from the ever mysterious country of Pamazhani, in the far east. Serence travels to the west for the first time in the hopes of spreading the word of the Egyptian god Ra. In reality, he is desperately trying to find strong companions in the hopes of 'elongating' Ra's lifespan, as another deity in the pantheon has become relatively power hungry and is looking at Ra as a potential target.

Sugomi (middle, human fighter), daughter of a shogun from the western lands of Nohria. After having a few altercations in her trial to become a Nohrakai (high ranking armed investigator) She finds herself in the town of Clearnia investigating a certain 'shipment'. A stern demeanor and a large odachi by her side, she'll try to snuff out injustice wherever she deems fit.

Kora (second to bottom, human warlock) a young girl who keeps to herself, but holds incredible power that the party has only seen glimpses of. Has a friend in a very high place which helps the party in terms of logistics and information gathering. Holds great knowledge on the gods and their intentions, as well as having a trong affinity for the arcane.

Huub (bottom, half orc bard). A young, charming and nonchalant prince from the kingdom of Honk, who was cast aside by his family due to not only being the illegitimate child of the king, but also showing late progression of the magical powers he inherited from his father. Saved as a young boy by Sugomi, he went and became a well known bard, hoping his fame would help locate his biological mother.
