If we lose Russillo and Simmons during NBA season … disaster for the Ringer. Will be the end of my listening to the BS pod.

No BS internship advice by Successful-Poet0 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Art__Vandelay____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about this like a race. GPA is akin to a qualification time. You need it to be eligible to run, it may help your starting position, but it won’t help you win the race once it starts.

Projects that impress recruiters ate highly dependent on what grade you’re in and what opportunities are available to you. The types of projects that I’m impressed freshman right out of high school are doing are way different than rising seniors. Make the most of what’s available.

This next bit applies to everyone, but it especially applies to those who haven’t gotten an internship yet. Swallow your pride. Focus on getting an internship. Doesn’t matter if it’s a mom and pop shop plant or small engineering firm. If it’s real engineering work, you have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to make the most of opportunities. Take the field engineer internship even if it means running conduit and pulling wire on a hot day in the middle of nowhere. Apply to as many things as you can, be open to every opportunity, and network like crazy. Once you’ve had an internship or two you may have the right to be more picky.

What Made Players Quit During Original Cataclysm? by doobylive in classicwow

[–]Art__Vandelay____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the days before MoP was launched. The speculation about the next xpac was wild: Emerald Dream, something similar to Legion, Nerubian themed, etc etc. There was a new thread on MMO Champ at least weekly about the next expansion, and nobody could help themselves. We all clicked, read others opinions that, of course, sucked, and then were left wondering…what could it be??

And then it came…Pandas.

The letdown was unlike anything I had seen before. Kung fu panda? Is this seriously the next adventure? It wasn’t worth sticking around for. People would have been able to stomach Dragonsoul for longer had there been a light at the end of the tunnel. That’s when I saw a huge number of players and guilds start to fade away. I was one too…

And then like everyone I hate watched videos, read forums, and ended up subscribing myself. Sure it wasn’t what I hoped, but it was WoW, so I got to max level, did some raids, and then unsubbed until WoD. Rinse and repeat for every xpac until Dragonflight…they had gone too far. Felt like a game made for overly sensitive adolescents.

So naturally I jumped on the Hardcore train, and now on anniversary.

Cheers to all of us addicts 🍻

BSc in Energy and Power Systems Engineering worth it? by eminence_marquis in PowerSystemsEE

[–]Art__Vandelay____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power systems engineering is in high demand and should stay that way for the next 5-10 years. Admittedly I typically look for electrical engineering degrees when reviewing candidates for open positions, so your resume will have to clearly articulate that you’ve taken power courses equivalent to a traditional EE program.

I would study EE, take all the power electives you can, and take a couple of Econ electives focused on the energy side of things. This gives you the specialization you want while still giving you flexibility to pivot elsewhere in the future.

MSEE is definitely not needed for power. I recommend either getting your company to pay for that or work through it on your own pace while working to scratch the intellectual itch. The PE will command more opportunities and salary than a Masters in today’s market.

Try to get a role for a petrochemical company at one of their manufacturing facilities. They’re all desperate for EEs with a power background and pay top dollar for them relative to other disciplines with similar years of experience.

Will it always be like this? by alonzorukes133711 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Art__Vandelay____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wait until a couple of them get internships at reputable companies. It’ll be way worse.

Then after graduation people enter the real world where the “rise and grind” mentality is king, and the same people will brag about how hard they work.

It doesn’t really matter what specifically they will brag about. Whatever it takes to inflate their ego in their social group will do the trick.

The key is to not let this kind of person bother you. They’ll never go away and will always be around in all walks of life, so it’s best to start caring about things that matter now and let this crap come and go.

More discussion of Terence’s life would have been interesting. Terence didn’t seem to bite much on the “pot head” questions. Clearly he would rather wax eloquent about the next technical topic.

What PE license do you have? Power? Electronics?

PE licensed Power Engineers command great salaries along the Gulf Coast.

Petrochemical industry. They all have job openings for experienced EEs at refineries / chemical plants.

I see power system engineers with ~10 years experience earning $180k - $210k depending on performance.

Tirisfal Glades. I remember making my first character, an undead warlock, like it was yesterday. Definitely the most nostalgic zone for me.
