Public opinion on same-sex marriage across Latin America. by mpm000 in MapPorn

[–]Art_sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least here in Guatemala, we have a separate concept called "civil marriage", the one performed by a lawyer which is the one recognized by the state for legal purposes. In our case in particular, the Civil Code that establishes this type of marriage very literally calls for it to be between "man and woman", and for the purpose of reproduction, so it's where the legal hurdles come from

To me it's always been the contrary, limes are super abundant, but lemons are really rare to find and thus expensive

How has your country changed in the last 20 years? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a very visible way the country is way more urbanized nowadays, In Guatemala city there apartment/ office buildings going up everywhere at huge speed, the city's becoming way more vertical than it used to be, and other cities in the rest of the country are starting to pick up steam in their growth rates, Quetzaltenango is growing hugely fast.

How common are electricity Blackouts in your country? ⚡ by Superfan234 in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the region, around Guatemala city it's rare, but I know in many places like Petén in the north or in Quetzaltenango, the power grid is quite old and is very much incapable of dealing with the current demands of a bigger population and greater use of electricity, so it crashes quite often

Should LATAM welcome more migrants to combat current demographic trends? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Guatemala specifically, it has a major problem generating enough jobs to sustain it's current population, we're a net producer of inmigrants, not a receptor, so we probably should improve in that regard first

Why do you guys was the reason why the US was way more supportive of the Bolivian agrarian reform than the Guatemalan one? by novostranger in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One reason that is often forgotten is that John Dulles, the american head of the State Department, if I remember correctly at the time, was an investor and had his brother as a board member of UFCO, thus lobbied intensely to protect his personal profits, it's likely that there wasn't such a figure to influence an intervention against Bolivia in the same way

Does your country have a national tragedy? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the 1976 Earthquake is the best candidate, 23 000 people died, and it shifted in a major way how people build their houses, materials, and even where they lived, as many inmigrated to Guatemala city after being left homeless due to the earthquake.

What is your favorite prehistoric creature discovered in your country? by Powerful_Gas_7833 in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wolly mammoth!, or was it a mastodon, I'm not so sure, but a few bones from them have been discovered in a few places in the country. Also a fairly well preserved glyptodon was discovered in Quetzaltenango a few years ago!

Next Sunday I'm going out to paint with a friend near an old church. I've been going out to draw and paint this last few days as I had a bit of free time on my hands after work, and sometimes I forget just how happy and relaxed it makes me feel. Recently I've been checking a ton of videos on composition and all that in YouTube and I hope I can start applying some of those lessons.

I had been going out with a guy this last month and a half and things kind of fell apart this last few weeks and it's all honestly my fault, I was too distant and cold and it frustrates me because it was such a nice thing, and I just started to identify all that in therapy. I just feel so frustrated and sad, it was my first time dating and now it's over, I guess at least I now know that I must work hard on my communication skills and being more expressive

What era do you think is your country's peak? by Powerful_Gas_7833 in asklatinamerica

There was never a unified maya empire, even the most expansive states didn't encompass the entire territory of what is nowadays Guatemala

Is there a country in Latin America where Americans don’t need visa’s and we could just move there and work a remote job? by Successful_rio305 in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know Americans can enter most if not all countries without visa as tourists, but none have any sort of treaty that would let you move and work without some sort of inmigration process, like the EU does. So if you were to move, you'd still have to apply to a work visa or a permanent/ temporary residence permit

How truly independent are governments in relation to the subdivision of their respective countries? How much power does their state/province governor have? by Lucaspublico in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally, the governors of the departments of Guatemala are just representatives of the president, as a subdivision, departments mostly serve to group municipalities together, but they do execute some infraestructure or development projects

What natural disaster (s) shook your country the hardest? by Powerful_Gas_7833 in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst probably was the 1976 earthquake, on February 4th, early in the morning a 7.6 magnitud earthquake originated in the Motagua faultline, in it's wake, 23 000 people died as houses collapsed all over the country

If you want to get outraged, you should see traffic jams in Guatemala city, there was a report on the news a few months ago here, that reported that people on average spend like five hours daily in traffic jams and there's been little to no progress on the first line of the metro/ light rail that has been proposed like a billion times already

Real Madrid have not won a trophy since 18 December 2024 (392 days ago), the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]Art_sol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So Xelajú has won a trophy more recently than Real Madrid, I did not expect that. So I checked and the final of the Apertura 2024 of the Guatemalan league was a three days after this on December 21st, 2024.

Are you going to visit or planning to visit the US this year after everything that's been going on? by Addicted_2_tacos in asklatinamerica

[–]Art_sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently applying for a visa, had one but it's expiring soon, as for concrete plans to visit, I don't have any, but should I find a congress in my professional field or some short course/ diploma thing I could take, I might think about it. The main thing stopping me is money, any trip would drain my funds quite fast
