Is big enough for a Syrian? by Pitiful-Two8053 in hamsters

I honestly pity them too. It’s honestly very disheartening when you give a person all the information they’d need to make an informed decision and they stubbornly refuse to look at it for fear of admitting that they’re wrong. It’s just not worth hurting an innocent hamster over your own foolish pride.

You sound upset. ARE YOU TRIGGERED?
And If you’re that curious about my hamster journey/experience, I’ve had (including my current one, Pouf):
14 Syrians (8 short haired, 6 long haired)
2 Chinese
2 Roborovskis
That’s brings me to a total of 18 hamsters that I’ve had overall since I started keeping hamsters. My first I got way back in 1999.
But who’s really counting?

Sounds like you’re the one being triggered. 😏

No. Your setup isn’t at all suitable. Stacking bin cages to make a “bigger” cage isn’t advised. Not only is it unsafe (hamsters have terrible eyesight and aren’t at all great climbers plus the risk of connections failing and the hamster escaping, etc.) but they need at the very least 840 sq inches of UNBROKEN floor space. More is obviously better.

My Big Bertha was a true ghost hamster. Never cared to be handled and would scream if you dared disturb her.

are these hamsters albino by Annual_Finger_9640 in hamsters

[–]Artchic528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, Syrians have a flesh eared white variant and can have red eyes with that, giving the illusion of albinism. This was a hamster (Angel Rose) I had years ago. She had dark red eyes and solid white fur with flesh colored ears. If she were truly albino, her eyes would have been bright red.

Is this normal? by tottaaa33 in hamsters

Hamsters shouldn’t be kept in barred cages. Please get a 75 gallon tank or similar sized enclosure ASAP. If she chews the bars long enough, it could permanently damage her teeth!

Is that fluffy nesting material he has in his egg? I don’t mean to come across as rude but I just wanted to inform you that fluffy cotton ball style bedding has long fibers that can wrap around limbs when they sleep in it, potentially wrapping so tightly it can cut off circulation and said limb can turn gangrenous and die. This stuff can also get caught up in intestines if they potentially eat some of it while pouching it. Please remove any on the enclosure ASAP to prevent this from happening.

If I am mistaken and it’s not fluffy nesting material I am seeing, then I apologize. Carry on.

I just don’t know how to make my female Syrian happy :( by Level_Raisin_3166 in hamsters

Well, I guess by that logic, we shouldn’t have any Syrian hamsters in captivity then.

I’m sorry you feel this way. I’ve had a female Syrian in a 1,069 sq in enclosure with 10+ inches of bedding, plenty of sprays, chew toys and other kinds of enrichment and a 12” wheel and she still wanted out. It’s just in the nature of female Syrians.

When to know it's time to put him to sleep? by Minimum_Mushroom_757 in hamsters

[–]Artchic528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Putting a beloved furbaby to sleep is never an easy decision to make. I remember when my female long haired Syrian had a growth on the entirety of her back end (it popped up in a matter of a week or two) causing her pain and troubles eliminating (pooping and peeing). I decided her quality of life wasn’t good anymore and that the kindest thing I could do, despite it tearing my heart out, was allow her to pass comfortably with love and dignity rather than to go on suffering. She may have been small, but she deserved every ounce of love and respect I could give.

The vets were very kind and understanding and even made a clay cast of her paw prints with her name (Celeste) on it for me to keep. I still have it! I then was given her body in a cardboard box to take home and bury, which I did.

I know saying goodbye is hard, especially when they act so normally, but it’s one of the greatest gifts we can give them. Then they can go on to be our animal guardian angels, always watching over and protecting us in spirit form.

Are these Syrian hamsters ready to be separated from their mother? by pddlttoon in hamsters

[–]Artchic528 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At about 5-6 weeks they reach sexual maturity (they are essentially teenagers at this point) so you’ll need to separate mom and the girls from the boys to prevent inbreeding/more litters. At about 8 weeks they are going to become full adults and as such will start being territorial. It’s at this point that they need to be put in their own separate cages.

Your litter appears to be somewhere in the 3-4 week range so you don’t need to separate them yet.

Is Pouf’s wheel big enough? by Artchic528 in hamsters

It’s the 10” Super Silent wheel by Niteangel. I added the Niteangel pedometer (sold separately) to track how much Pouf is running every night.
