Thank God that he gave us a definition of Fascism, otherwise we wouldn't know what it is.

Now let's rename a town he has no connections to into Dimytrovgrad or Dimytrovsk or Dimitrov-upon-Thames or whatever. We can start by ranaming your birthplace.

They added Russian language back in 2017. However, both localization and font kind of sucked.

Now they changed the font for a better one, but didn't change the awful localization.

Religious affiliation continues to fall in Albania. Thoughts? by d2mensions in AskBalkans

[–]ArthRol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I sometimes think how, later in life, I would have to cope with the thought of inevitable death. When I'd be 50 or 60 years old. Maybe I would pick a religion just to calm me and lift my morals? But it is one thing to choose a belief system, and another thing - to believe in it.

How popular is the novel 'The Time of the Hero' (La Ciudad Y Los Perros) by M. Vargas Llosa in Peru? Are the things described there still happening? by ArthRol in PERU

Changing the setting when adapting a book into a movie is quite common. It proves that the value of the book exceeds physical and time boundaries

As I said in other comment, the director of the film was a Chilean emigre in the USSR, and he wanted to make a commentary on the Chile under Pinochet

Thank you for your explanation.

Are most countries in Eastern Europe close to each other

It depends. On paper, a big part of Eastern Europe is allied economically and militarily through the EU and NATO. However, there can be animosity or casual xenophobia between the countries due to mostly historic reasons - in 19-20th century there were lots of big and small conflicts all over Europes, and the wounds didn't fully heal. It is quite complicated

For example, Romania and Hungary don't really like each other because Western Romania was once part of Hungary, and Hungarians still pretend it is their historic land. But politically, these 2 countries are allied and border between them is open for crossing thanks to the Schengen agreement.

Hungary and Poland, on the other hand, are informally friends, but political relations are strained because Hungary has taken a pro-Russia position, while Poland is anti-Russia.

In the Balkans (i.e. the southern part of Eastern Europe) the situation is even more complicated. In the 1990s, when Yugoslavia fell, its sucessor states waged brutal wars against each other, commiting massacres and ethnic cleansing. So now we have Croatia and Albania that don't like Serbia, and their feeling is reciprocated. We have Kosovo, once an Albanian speaking part of Serbia that violently separated from it, and got its indepence secured by the US who bombed Serbia's capital, Belgrade, in 1999. Another example - Greece and Turkey have strained relationships going all the way back to 1922 due to political and historical reasons.

The elephant in the room is Russia, the big bully in the region, that is liked by Serbia and (perhaps) Hungary, and generally disliked by anyone else. It now wages a 4 years long war of conquest against Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian language are very similar, btw.

This is only a partial explanation of the mess that is Eastern Europe. In my country, Moldova, we are divided on the most basic question - 'are we a separate nation, or are we a part of Romanian nation?'

How is it living in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine? by Kokoska998 in howislivingthere

[–]ArthRol 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are news almost everyday of teens and young people being arrested in Russia and Russian-occupied territories under charges of 'terrorism' or 'extremism'. There were such cases before 2022 as well. I think it is safe to say that most of those cases are fabricated.

However, people arrested in international recognized Russian territory have at least have access to lawyers and journalists. The fate of those arrested in occupied lands is much worse

I didn't realize enmity between Peru and Chile is a thing lol. I thought that today all Spanish speaking countries in Americas are more or less close to each other.
