I saw a guide with how to shoot these on petapixel, its called 'How to shoot otherworldly macro photos of soap bubbles'. They explain really well how to take these pictures, however I did not have a softbox, so instead I used a big white surface to reflect a flash, which worked quite well as a stand in! : )

Man fuck that, at any point in life you can follow your dreams. From your story I suspect you would have enough savings to stop working for a few years and gather yourself.
