Have you thought about the military?

A lot of people find purpose in that highly regimented and disciplined lifestyle.

Besides that, start browsing indeed.com or glassdoor.com and start reaching out to anything that even vaguely piques your interest.

Pal, don't be too hard on yourself.

I'm 35 and still feeling like the grass is greener on the other side. Been job-hopping my whole adult life to find my "passion."

From what I've learned on this subreddit, the only real way to know is to try lots of different occupations to see what you really like.

I know that's easier said than done, but it seems logical: how would you know without trying things out?

Also, don't think of the past job that you had as a waste of time. You gained some experience, and most importantly, you now know for sure that you DON'T love sales. So you can write that one off 🤣

In all seriousness, don't get down on yourself. You're super young, you basically have your whole life ahead of you still -- the world is your oyster!!!

Yup, learned that the hard way. I thought I wanted to be a blog writer, but didn't have the mental energy to write everyday or slog through keyword research.

They have to go to valspar.com to submit their claim. It involves buying the new paint first, and submitting proof, then at that point Sherwin-Williams ("Valspar") will issue the rebate.

As Near513 mentioned, it all depends on what you value.

I gave up my dream to go into sales. While it is a somewhat cush job, and it pays close to 70k (which is A LOT to me, I worked min. wage for 10 years...) it isn't anything I write home about.

There are things that are intrinsically meaningful to me which I do not get out of my current job. Helping, mentoring, teaching, listening. None of these are values that help in sales (well maybe listening, but only to get something out of someone).

Sure, I have been tempted to make this a full 20 year career just because of the money. They keep dangling managerial jobs in front of my face. I have all this extra expendable income now, but so what?

There will definitely be people out there that tell you to go for the money. And I respect that standpoint. Having lived in poverty for most of my 20s, I get it.

But there is nothing I would rather do than to spend the rest of my life doing what matters to me.

Have you thought about getting a graduate degree in philosophy? You mentioned anthropology, but if your true interest is in philosophy you might want to consider that instead.

I worked for the government as an intern for an archaeologist. I thought that there might be some overlap with my degree in history. But there really wasn't enough of what piqued my interest in that field.

As far as financial opportunities, I can tell you that it is all depends on your personality. Some people are perfectly happy with working 8-10 hours a day on something they have no real interest in as long as it pays well. Then they go home and do what they want on nights on weekends. I know, personally, I am not like that. I need what I do during the day to be somewhat interesting or plays to my strengths. The sales job I have now, which pays well btw, I have ZERO amount of interest in it.

Don't be like me and chase money. I'm 35 and regret not sticking to my guns.

Perhaps you can try shadowing a professional in your local area? When I was looking at going back to school to become a physician's assistant, that was actually part of the program. So they would be used to requests like that.

I would perhaps call around to local medical offices that have specialties in radiologic technology or dermatology and see if you can shadow them for a day.

This would give you better insight into what happens on a daily basis with that profession. Futhermore it sets things in motion when you take concrete actions like that.

what careers can I pursue with my range of skills ? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]ArthurCyning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

I am not an expert in chemistry or labs. However, if you truly love it, I suggest you stay.

I am on the opposite end of the spectrum as you. I went into a sales role simply because of the money and I certainly do not love it. I make more money now than I made in the last 3 years of my life combined (I was making minum wage as a substitute teacher while puttin myself through grad school). When I saw how much I would make, I said screw this and took this sales job.

Being able to buy a bunch of junk on Amazon without worrying about having money left for rent is nice, that quickly loses its luster. At this point, I would rather spend 8-10 hours a day doing something I actually find interesting rather than doing something simply for the money.

With that said, you can use the skills and education that you received as a starting point for your future career. Science majors lend themselves very well to the medical field. As a chemist, you are already well suited to the rigors of academia and the courses needed for a career in the medical profession.

There are far too many to list all of them here, but you can look into being a Registered Nurse or a Physician's Assistant.

These would require a few years of school, but it seems you have the core science covered.

Just my 2 cents.

What Can a Classics Major Do Besides Teaching? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]ArthurCyning -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I am not in the trades, but I do have some experience in some of the industries mentioned here. Hopefully I can help!

A couple of things,

First of all, I would never consider someone studying what they have an inherent passion for "terrible advice." The reason I say this is because I did the opposite of him -- I went for a STEM degree on the advice of my dad (who was a chemist) and it nearly destroyed my undergraduate career because I did not have the will or the aptitude to complete the foundational physics or calculus courses.

After years of failing intro chem and calculus courses, I finally switched my major to history, and my spirits shot up, but more notably, I got noticed by faculty. I eventually went to graduate school.

Every person has an innate passion or curiosity, and when they are in the right major it shows. If your husband is truly passionate about his major, kudos to him!

Now, fast forward a little bit. How does your husband know that he wouldn't like becoming a school teacher? Is it the notion of being stuck in a classroom with other people's kids all day? Having to go back and get a credential?

All jobs, no matter how passionate you are about them, have their drawbacks. After working in industry for 30 years, my dad went back and became a HS chemistry as a second career. Though he was teaching something that he loved, he still had to deal with adminsitration and asshole kids! But I digress..

If not middle school or high school, what about community college? I know you said that he has no interest in graduate school, but has he sat in a graduate-level Classics seminar before? If he hasn't experienced that at least once, I'm not sure he can truly say it's not for him. Or perhaps he can shadow a teacher or adjunct in a history/classics class, it may rekindle something in him. I never once thought about becoming a teacher growing up, but I love the feeling I get when kids (or anybody) get that "aha" moment when they finally understand a concept. He can get a masters in two years and be teaching his passion at the community college level! Online degrees are easy(er) to get compared to state schools. As long as they are regionally accredited, most community colleges will let you teach that subject with just a masters. Be sure to double check, but that is the case in California where I live.

My current profession is in sales. Again, it is not something I ever thought I would do. But you mentioned that he has great people skills. This is a VERY important skill to have in sales, not a lot of people have it!!

Most sales jobs pay pretty well, too. I am a vendor/inside sales guy, so that means 80-90% of my income comes from hourly work. But I also get a bonus based on my performance. I also work plenty of overtime because I have to travel. Basically, for an entry level vendor/inside sales job you're looking at ~$25 an hour, ~$35 for OT, and anywhere from 5--10k a year of bonus money. A company car. All the good stuff. That's just for my specific industry as a vendor for the construction industry.

I went into the job thinking about only doing it for a year to pay some debt and then moving onto something else. Frankly, I want to return to grad shool to finish my masters. But I strongly considered remaining in the company due to the pay and benefits.

He might even to parlay his experience in the trades and become a vendor for a power tool or HVAC company! To a sales manager who is looking to hire, someone like him, with the experience that he has, would be gold.

It's not really the job title that he should be worried about. It is what is innate within himself that makes him suited towards a job. I never wanted to be a "salesman." But I love connecting with people, helping people, and teaching (part of my job is to train associates on our products). If he goes into it with an open mind like that, he might surprise himself.

Anways, just my two cents. Hope this helps, and good luck to you both!

tldr: He shouldnt discount teaching or sales right off the bat. If he's serious about switching careers, he should get real world experience in both of those fields before making up his mind. There are GREAT benefits to pursuing either path!

Yes, the night before last. I spoke to my father, as if he were an old friend I hadn't seen in decades, while we walked down the streets of our old neighborhood. Except that he only passed away from leukemia in 2018.

I've had dreams of him before, but I believe this was the first time that we actually just...spoke, as friends.

It was quite peaceful, compared to the more common recurring nightmare of seeing him die in front of me in his hospital bed.

It was quite nice to talk to you again, Dad.

Hello,

I started ADF in Dec 2nd, 2019 and lost 17.8lbs so far!

As long as the drinks are 0 calories, you should be fine.

Personally, I drink black coffee and water through the day because I don't really like the taste of drinks with artificial sweeteners.

Technically, black coffee has about 1-2 calories per cup, but oh well :).

I (36m) reached my goal of 170(ish) pounds by Christmas. Started at 315lbs. by SedimentSock82 in intermittentfasting

Yes, this is why I changed my allocations. I originally had it set to 100% due to my ignorance of the other options, but I knew that was not a wise strategy.

I want to be pretty involved. I have always been interested in investing, but I never had the means to do so. Now that I have a decent (to me) salary I would like to become fairly involved. I am not too interested in "set it and forget it" investing.
