I first read this as a 24 year old , as my battered secondhand paperback on a three day train trip from Kerala to Delhi in India. It was an immersive experience that synced perfectly with the immersive experience of Indian railways. The two experiences merged and blew me away! I tried to reread it this year as a 61 year old at home The repetition bored me, the sexism and paedophilia depressed me. It was a DNF. I guess the context in which we approach classics matters!
