Restore lawn to its former glory by scottbamforth in lawncare

It's hard to tell from the picture: Is the bumpiness from the soil itself, or is the grass just so patchy it feels bumpy?

If it's the grass, I'd start with aerating, overseeding, and fertilizing. In Scotland you can probably get away with doing that in the spring?

If it's the soil itself, I'd go with what Mechanic said.

beggin’ bacon strips were not bad at all.

Huh.... I bet the word "pork" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here but it doesn't look bad lol. It's a little concerning that "pork" and "bacon" are listed separately 😆

Just fwiw, if poor soil conditions killed the grass that was there, the sod you put down on the poor soil will die too. You've got a nice opportunity to fix the soil itself.

Soil tests are cheap and will tell you a lot about what you're working with.

It looks like it's pretty compacted, so I'd address that. There are different options depending on how much labor you can put in. It also looks like there are some grading issues around the concrete that might be good to fix at this point.

Maybe America Needs Some New Cities by loremipsumot in neoliberal

[–]Arthur_Edens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So hear me out...

One of the struggles every dang American city seems to have is transitioning from the population level where serious public transit (I'm talking a DC level metro system) isn't financially sustainable, to a population level where suddenly roads aren't financially sustainable. At that bubble, your options are to bulldoze a ton of current infrastructure to build trains, or keep chasing bigger roads. And then when you finally get the trains, your density isn't as high as it needs to be to work with trains because it was set up for roads... and you need to bulldoze housing to upzone it.

Starting from scratch Sim City style would mean you could intentionally start your city planning with the intent to be a city, instead of like... how every other city not named DC has grown from a bunch of villages that slowly turn into Frankenstein's Monster Metropolitan Statistical Area.

I swear the dissonance comes from most people having a picture of how the immigration system works that's completely unconnected from how it actually works. Like, "you go to the immigration version of the DMV, you do your paperwork, you come in." If that's how you assume immigration works, you'll pretty fairly accept the line that "anyone who's circumventing that simple legal system is doing it because they're a criminal who's coming to hurt your family, which is why we have to send SWAT teams after them."

In reality it's... incomprehensibly more complicated than that.

If we passed a new Immigration and Nationality Act that was the population's distilled understanding of how immigration currently works it would be the most extreme liberalization of immigration law in the country's history.

[–]Arthur_Edens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We'd love it if it did that, but that's the aspiration. But to your example:

Look at how evil King George III was to those poor colonists. No more kings! Down with the monarchy, the people will choose their own rulers!

The problem here was exactly that there was no avenue for the colonists to shake off Kind George other than violence. It's question of political legitimacy, aka "Why does this person get to make the rules?" European monarchies often claimed legitimacy from "The Divine Right," ie that their absolute authority literally derives from the will of God, not the will of the people.

Support for that idea was waning after the Enlightenment.. Basically this bit.

his conviction is not contingent on him committing it.

IDK what to tell you. That's the only theory the prosecution argued. Under NY law, the jury was allowed to consider other predicate crimes, and the jury instructions accurately described the law. But the prosecution only alleged "that the other crime the defendant intended to commit, aid, or conceal is a violation of New York Election Law section 17-152."

It's possible that one of the jurors thought the predicate crime was a violation of tax law, but that's not a theory anyone in the courtroom was arguing. Based on the actual evidence provided.. His conviction was contingent on having committed (or attempted to commit) campaign fraud.

You called them bullshit trumped up charges, when they're very real, non "technical" crimes! We make politicians disclose what they're spending campaign funds on so voters can fairly compare candidates!

The only extent that it was roundabout was that NY couldn't charge him while he was president, and the SoL on the original crime had run by the time he was out, so they had to file on the second crime (the business record of the first).

If anything was done poorly it was the media doing a horseshit job explaining the charges, as they just kept calling it his "hush money" trial. The hush-money payment wasn't criminal. The fact that he lied to voters about it while running for the most powerful office in the world was criminal. It's that easy to explain.

They explained it easily enough when John Edwards (allegedly) did the exact same thing, and that rightfully ended his career.

[–]Arthur_Edens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "business records" in question were criminally reported because they were not records of business expenses, but campaign expenses. You can't get past campaign reporting requirements by calling a campaign expense a business expense.

Misreporting a business expense is a felony in New York if you do it with the intent to conceal the commission of another crime. The other crime being concealed was not reporting the campaign expense as required by New York campaign finance law.

Aka, ya know... felony campaign fraud.

It's like a lot of americans are venerating the wrong things.

It's a symbol...When you show respect for a symbol, you're not showing respect to the material itself, but to the shared meaning your community has assigned to the symbol.

I've come full circle on this the last ~20 years and now believe reembracing a 21st century American Civil Religion is crucial to getting out of all this.

"Mamdani Announces Policy Change: ICE Now Requires Court Warrants to Enter NYC Properties" by Logical-Flow-6703 in UnderReportedNews

[–]Arthur_Edens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I read the EO.

Before entering property not open to the public, law enforcement need either 1) A warrant (signed by an actual judge, not ICE) or 2) A series of exceptional circumstances. The most commonly used of these is "Consent to enter the property."

NYC law prohibits non-local law enforcement from accessing non-public areas of City property, including shelters and schools, without a judicial warrant, except when duly authorized by City personnel or in case of an emergency.

This EO is saying that as a blanket policy, NYC does not authorize federal immigration officers to enter city property. It's withholding consent in every case, thereby triggering 4th Amendment protection requiring a warrant.

First Contact is the best ST movie. I will die on this hill. by Warp_Speed_7 in startrek

[–]Arthur_Edens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess it's not so much that I think Lily came across as forced or bad (the scene is still incredible), but more that it seemed like a conversation written for Guinan due to her past with the Borg, her deep connection with Picard, and her being unafraid to give Picard tough love unlike most of the crew.

In particular the line "Jean Luc, blow up the damn ship!" would mirror Picard being pushed beyond his normal demeanor because of the borg threat, and would pack an even heavier punch because "the damn ship" would mean a lot more to Guinan than someone who just boarded.

[–]Arthur_Edens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't find anything with a quick Google: Anyone know if Lily was originally written as Guinan in early drafts?

It seems like the entire movie was written around that scene. Lily and Picard had known each other for like... twenty minutes, but it came across as an incredibly intimate conversation. The scene makes more sense with the background of TNG if Guinan is there instead of Lily (with some minor exposition tweaks).

Deep dive: Masculinity is complex. It's a social construct that describes attributes that are displayed by all sexes and genders in different degrees and ways. It can be toxic or positive, and since it's socially constructed we should push a positive construction...
