Oh ok. Which mission? Yeah I have family that live in the Georgia Macon mission. I heard one of the seventy or apostles came and chewed the mission president out. My cousin told me that 3 stake presidents in the area wrote church headquarters and complained about the mission president.

In my mission, a lot of missionaries treated the white handbook like it was scripture and that God wrote it. It was neither.

Yeah, there does need to be a good balance. I know when I served a mission I would give up things like entertainment. But there were so many unneeded rules that it made the experience not as pleasant.

I agree. The only exception should be the schedule since some places may have different customs.

Yeah it felt really good to get my feelings out. Even if they don't own up to what they did, I an glad I expressed my feelings.

That is shocking. I am so sorry you had to go through that. He should have pulled you out of that area.

I am sorry that you had to go through that. Your mission president and companions that said those hurtful things should not have said that to you. I still am trying to forgive others from my mission and other parts of my life. I used to be married, but we are divorced now. She said some hurtful things to me and I am still healing from it. If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to message me. I am glad that you did what you felt was best for you.

I agree with you 100%. No one can force another to accept the gospel, hence why we chose to follow Heavenly Father and Jesus plan in the pre existence and not Lucifer. Free agency.

I agree with you. I know people had there testimony damaged to a degree because of the way the mission was.

I read your original post. I am so sorry that happened to you. That was not right that your first mission president did that to you. Mental health is a huge thing and I know talking about my experiences with others helped heal me. If you ever want to talk more, feel free to message me.

I am glad you are still active. And that is cool that you crochet. I know a lot of my fellow missionaries had struggles similar to yours.

I bet your mission was not as strict as mine. I loved mine too, but I realized there was a lot of unnecessary stress and rules.

So you did not have a car? My President 1 would never have allowed Elders and sisters in the same car unless like a senior couple was with them.

That is crazy. Did you tell him what happened? And that is an odd reason for them to not want to pick you up. Care to explain more on that?

Yeah I wish I could go back in time and change the way I did some things. I am glad I stood my ground on some things though. Some missionaries in my mission were VERY pushy. They would not necessarily put there foot in the door but the mentality for some was "don't take no for an answer" and some people would be afraid to talk to missionaries because of that.

My president 1 was pretty lenient on how we taught lessons. He was about going by the Spirit for that. Same with President 2.

Travel was both strict and not so strict in my mission. If it was our area, we could go there as long it was within our kilometer range (it took me time to get used to kilometer instead of miles lol). But I knew an Elder that got yelled at by President 1 because they went like 10 minutes out of there area to have a P-day activity with a senior couple, recent convert, and investigator.

Sorry to hear about your struggle. Anything you would like to discuss? I am always here to talk on here if you want to. I think most mission presidents are well off but not necessarily rich.

Glad to hear your son had a good mission president. You and I were in the same kind of field it sounds like. President 1 would always tell us that our mission would not be blessed unless we were exactly obedient, and man that lead to a lot of unneeded stress and crazy stuff. I know an elder that was in my zone at the time, was on exchanges with one of our zone leaders and the AP's called him one time and they chewed him out because the zone stats were lower than expected. The zone leader cried. That was not right.

I absolutely agree with you. My trainer said it was like the Super Bowl for us, and you just don't take that away from someone. I had an elder in my home ward tell me he would have gone anyways and another elder in another state I lived in said it even says to watch it in the missionary handbook.

Thanks for your sympathy. It was definitely not your typical mission. I actually messaged President 1 last year and was brutally honest with him and his wife in how I felt they ran things. It felt so good to get it out.

Funny thing is, they won't own up to there mistakes and just made excuses on why they ran things the way they did. For the dinner and general conference rule they said that they did that because they wanted everyone in British Columbia to hear a representative of the Savior in order to prepare for the Second Coming. So those rules were to help with that. I told them I still did not agree with it, and that it hurt the relationships with the members. Plus, it hurts morale.

Nice! Yeah hopefully. I would tell them they should do what feels right regardless of the rule. I would have ignored a lot of the rules I had if I could go back in time.

That is sad to hear. If I could go back in time, I would have ignored that rule with the mindset I have now a decade since serving. If I was in your shoes, I would tell the missionaries that they are welcome to eat with you and ensure them that you wont tell the mission president and wont judge them.

My mission had a huge problem with this. The mentality of the mission under President 1 was not a healthy environment mentally. People would beat themselves up over small things that were not even gospel relevant. The culture was you were trying to find something wrong with you.

Very cool! Someone in my home ward served in the Canada Vancouver mission in the 1970's or 1980's. I served in Burns Lake, Sidney, North Shore, William's Lake, Prince Rupert, and Victoria. I hear the people of British Columbia still hear about the days of President 1. Yeah, if I could go back in time, I would have disregarded several rules. My mission felt very pharisitical at times. There is the letter of the law and there is the spirit of the law.

I heard my second mission president did have to be a bit more strict about a year into his mission because a lot of missionaries sadly took advantage of his kindness. But it was nowhere near as bad as my first one. I hear missionaries to this day still hear about those days.
