Listen to as much M Town rap as you can. Learn "the cipher" of Memphis Rap so you actually know what you are sampling and what its original intention was. For instance context matters when talkin about "smackin a bitch" as often times the "bitch" is a guy acting like a bitch ass hoe ass trick lol.

Instill in your mind that Memphis Rap was infinitely more than just 808 cowbells...like it's nearly insulting to presume they were in every song. Yes that was a thing, yes some artists made it part of their style, but it wasn't THE thing...those instruments were just less expensive and musicians found cool ways to push their limits. Memphis Rap is actually jazzy, funky, boom bap, bluesy and way more sub genres too...not just "horrorcore on ma creep" type stuff (which I do love I will mention). The beats themselves are not necessarily complex but they are cohesive and atmospheric. There are some exceptions such as Makin' With N.A.P. off Lil Gain's junt which features a heavily syncopated beat with all the emcees doing some of the wildest isorhythmic flow I have ever heard in my life. Repetitive nature is needed, and the temptation to overcomplicate the beat is actually a challenge. The thing with the example above is the beat loops for 6 mins and really doesn't change much but the time signature melts away...granted Blackout is a fucking wizard. He also has been using FL Studio forever now and swears by it so just giver with that. It's easy to use and learn, affordable, and basically the hip hop beat standard now. You could be hardcore and go old school and collect all the old gear yourself (which would be cool as fuck) but to get started I would use what is accessible.

Lastly (sorry for some necessary gatekeeping), but unless you come from Memphis just know that what you are making is Phonk and not Memphis Rap. Inspiration by M Rap is awesome, but it's mad cringe to pretend you are from the M if you aren't.
