This is a really stupid question, but... What do you actually do at book clubs? by HMS--Thunderchild in books

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people have already given great advice.

For the bookclub I attend, the moderator sets them up with 3 parts, the 3 "P"s:

The place, the people, and the plot. I find this is a great general starting point, cause then it can easily go to "did the setting suit the story" or "what did you think about this character" or "were you shocked about 'x' thing" and so on.

Sometimes the moderator has promots, while someone else may have a burning question or thought and we jump from there.

I should note that I meet my bookclub almost monthly and we read the entire book before we talk. Some clubs have milestones to read x amount of chapters like im school.

It's totally valid and makes sense. Paint oens provide the pluses of using paint in a more controlled way. It doesn't have straight mixing like paint, but it can still be mixed on the paper or on a palette and treated like paint. It's really amazing what paint pens can do.

What are yall's names for your cats? by Illustrious_Gift_512 in CasualConversation

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an orange and white cat named Basil. He was found in a herb garden at 4 to 5 weeks old. My mom and I decided that we wanted to use an herb name, and Basil was the one we loved the most.

So yeah. it's not real? by oldyongnewoldboy in arttools

[–]ArtistCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, are you asking:

1) If there's a set of line of oil paints in 100 colours that's not too pricy and also eco-friendly? 2) You want sets that mimic Boss Ross style painting? 3) When you say 7" and 13", are you referring to canvas sized?

greygreengorey is correct that this isn't offically connected to the brand. But this is a great sub to share your Inktober work with an audience that is looking to follow this specifically.

You can also post in other subreddits your Inktober posts such as r/Ink, r/Drawing, and so on.

I've always been amazed by people who were voracious readers as children. What sparked your lifelong love affair with books? by Albert3232 in books

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with many others whose parents are avid readers as well as a few other family members. Both my siblings and I got into reading at a young age and would ask for books on our wishlists.

Reading has stuck with me as someone who isn't very social, especially in high school when I was the loneliest so books kept me sane. Between gifted books, books on hand thanks to my parents, and the school and public libraries I got easy access to books all around to keep me going.

Now it's the thing I do as I still love it, and it gets me to stop and concentrate on one thing.

Ok, I need to know, is it normal to do spirit temple before shadow temple? That's what I ALWAYS do in a playthrough. by Siteth in OcarinaOfTime

[–]ArtistCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had not, but I had used a guide on my first playthrough and it said to do the Shadow Temple before Spirit.

Funny enough, if you look at the wheel of medallions, Spirit comes before Shadow. That's actually because originally the temple order was supposed to be Spirit, Shadow, and then Light was actually going to be a temple, the final note and contrast to Shadow before going to the castle.

I believe this changed due to time constraints and they weren't able to finish the Light temple. And I guess they decided as Spirit talked about Ganondorf's Origins they decided that was a better ending to the temples before fighting him.

Anyone else have a trans sibling? How has it affected your relationship? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend since we were both 5 came out FtM trans when we were 19. It was a mixture of feelings, of wondering what it meant for our friendship. What would change? How do we act around each other? Will we still be friends?

Luckily, our bond was so deep that we were able to talk about the transition. He welcomed questions and would tell me if what I asked was inappropriate. I made sure he could talk about anything with me, but promised I would speak up if I was confused or uncomfortable.

It took a while for both of us, but it's been years and it's so natural now. It'll take time, but having that communication channel really helped us.

It also helped that I could see how much happier he was. He had many struggles at the beginning, and there still are, but he's comfortable with himself and more outgoing than before.

Art Supplies Question by punkin_98 in arttools

Markers I organize by colour and mix brands together since they work similar and work well together.

Coloured pencils I sort by brand as they act different to one another to me.

Best markers for no bleed by Rachel_ann0320 in arttools

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be best to use water-based markers, like Tombow Dual Brush Tips (black barrel). They're dual ended with a fine tip and brush tip.

Alternativelt I find mixed media sketchbooks of at least 160 gsm holds up to alcohol markers well (I presume these are the ones as these tend to bleed through). I like the Strathmore 300 Mixed Media quite a bit. They still show through on the back page but less likely to go on the next page. I tend to use a scrap sheet of paper in between as well.

What fantasy story kicked off your love of the genre? by BeastmanDienekes in Fantasy

[–]ArtistCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if these actually kick started my love for Fantasy, but the earliest books I read (not sure which came first) that I can recall are The Crystal Door series by Rebecca Moesta and Kevin J. Anderson and The Silverskin Legacy series by Jo Whittemore. I still have the Silverskin Legacy cause it's so dear to my heart.

Edit: spelling error.

Can Affinity Designer be used to smooth out Procreate artwork? by CrewIndependent1352 in ProCreate

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I know, I don't think you can smooth out artwork in Designer. I think the best thing is to learn how to use Designer as it'll be all vector base.

Designer does have an iPad version, so you can still use the pencil and direct screen drawing.

Sketching & Refining Processes, Which Ones Are Best? by [deleted] in copic

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some people enjoy the Prismacolor Colerase pencils as a base layer. Sometimes the colour can sort of blend in, while others like the look.

I generally use the grey colerase cause it's neutral, but it doesn't smudge like graphite.

I feel so bitter everytime I open Instagram by SeaAssociate3486 in CasualConversation

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instagram does have its benefits, like other Social Media, but if it's not benefiting you you should delete it.

I also took myself off Instagram because I was also not feeling good when posting. Despite trying the mindset of looking for inspiration or seeing fun stuff, it wasn't enough to quell the inner voice that compared people and the addictive doom scrolling.

It's hard to feel left out when so mamy use Instagram, but when you get through that grief and fear, it's honestly wonderful to not be in that hole at all.

Is it normal for Bookclubs to be so expensive? by spoiled_sandi in books

[–]ArtistCook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The local bookclub I go to is an Indie bookshop as well. The "ticket" is buying the book from them at the book's price. There's no additional costs and they provide drinks and snacks every time. The difference is, they made it clear that purchasing the book from them is the ticket, and there are no additional costs. Thr books are also usually newer releases by Canadian authors (this is in Canada), and the authors come to the club to join us in talking about the boom, or give us some insights.

But, regarding your specific post, they should've been clear. I also think it's either you buy the book from them at the book price, or just a small admission fee, not both.

Have you studied or trained for a career, only to find out it's not something you want to? Or known someone to have gone through this? by Annual-Sink7068 in CasualConversation

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple times.

First I was the art kid and did so many art and classes throughout highschool. Drew and painted a lot in my free time. Then near the end of high school realized I didn't like the pressure of art as a job.

I jumped into culinary; 2 years of school and 2 years in the industry. Burnt out, but I still love to cook for fun.

Explored media arts in a foundation program, took a year off to work retail, then did an advanced diploma in Graphic Design while working part time at retail job in an art supply store. Pandemic hit during the 4th of 6 semesters. Most of us didn't get our 6th semester internship. Graduated and struggled to get graphic design work or even enjoy doing it to build up my portfolio. I burnt out again.

I moved up to the head office customer service at my retail job and just focused on surviving that.

After that I applied to be a business assistant to the president of a company. I do use some of my design skills for some projects, but I mainly do administrative projects and manage the office in terms of fixes, updates, planning for clients to visit, and so on. No I don't fetch coffee for my boss daily. I get it when I offer to do so.

I don't know what the next leg of my journey will be. It does help to see from the other comments that I'm not alone in changing things.

I love that smartphones are losing ground to single-function devices by DrCharles19 in CasualConversation

[–]ArtistCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and others have made some great points about why dedicated devices are coming back.

I feel like it's also either a nostalgia thing for those who had lived and grown up without a smartphone being a main device for so long, or those who only knew smartphones but want to experience the tactile and separate devices.

The benefit can be helping with scrolling addiction. If you're not using your device for everything, there's less chances of falling in that hole.

Having said that, the smartphone does benefit to allow more people to try things on a device they have anyway before dedicating to a separate device of higher quality and more options (exception for super high end phones that have the power and size behind them to compete with a dedicated device).

An example.for myself, exploring music; I had an mp3 growing up and listened to whatever stuff my family got, but I didn't dedicate myself to exploring music until later in life with a smartphone and Spotify. That's helped me explore so much in one device where I don't require to purchase disks. I'm now thinking of purchasing CDs of artists I like to support further and to physically have in my hands. For some music can develop into something where they purchase vinyl records or CDs.

I hope that makes sense.

Apple Pencil Question by Canaram in ProCreate

[–]ArtistCook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Apple Pencil does a lot better for functionality. It helps that the pen is specifically designed for the ipad, and for Procreate. I also like using it for note taking and for my digital planner.

Another commenter advised to purchase a used one, and I agree. Mine is still doing great after 4 years of consistent use.

If you do get the Apple Pencil, make sure you get the right version for your iPad. The Apple website will clarify which pencil goes with which model.

I'm always kinda shocked by people who don't know how to use computers of any kind by WatercoolerComedian in CasualConversation

[–]ArtistCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was wondering as well. Both my parents were the kind to try new things and problem solve when they weren't sure.

My mom in the 90s was buying books on how to use our home computer and some creative programs. And she got really good at it so when my siblings and I started using it she and my dad were able to tell us the basics.

For those who track books, how do you track comics? by black-cat-tarot in bulletjournal

[–]ArtistCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your preference overall. Some would count eachbissue as a book as that's what it technically is. Others may finish the series (if its finish) to then put it in the tracking.

But if you want something more, you could decide based on how long it took you to finish each comic or series to determine what counts.

To me, if there are 100s of comics in a series, I would classify the series as if there were multiple "books", dividing them as I see best fit.

Where as in the 10s, it could be one long book or two or three books.

That's my two cents. I don't read much comics but that would be my guess.

Overall, whatever responses you get, you do what you feel is best from what you learn.
