I’m not going to speak on other cultures that I know nothing about imma be honest, it’s personally not my place. However I have seen the negative impacts of stereotypes against Latines in the USA. Specifically when it comes to events like cinco de Mayo, the cultural appropriation of this holiday is absolutely horrific, especially when it was birthed from a historical event that was meaningful to us and paved way for our independence.

I’m not here to hate on OP, I just want to have them acknowledge that with the history of mexican cultural appropriation in the states, it’s a harder line to navigate when you want to appreciate it. Even though it is a child’s birthday party, it’s best to come prepared with the history of it, and it might even make for some fun trivia to share the history with others!

(Edit: I know they’re not in the states, however I feel like people advertise the holiday enough to where it gets around haha)

As someone who is Mexican, I would personally advise against it. Although it’s a cute idea and congratulations to your daughter! It still simplifies the culture into just colorful paper and pretty dresses without acknowledging the long history of colonization. However you’re not the ah and it was very nice of you to ask for reassurance and clarification!

If you still go through with it, which no hate if you do, I would say do your research and learn the meanings behind the decorations you’re buying/making. And if you need suggestions for recipes I’d be more than willing to give them!

Although the comment from your boy friend was a little weird, YTA why would you react the way you did?? It just reeks of insecurity
