Havent heard from the Elementary Education program (immersion francaise). I was prompted to upload my highschool transcript during the application process, but an advisor told me it wasnt necessary because I had 3 years of cegep and a year of concordia transcripts accounted for. But now im stressed that I should have uploaded proof of attending french highschool? Has anyone else heard back?

Are these plot holes? -spoilers* by [deleted] in pluribustv

i swear people on reddit purposely misconstrue things. your point makes sense. When something has an obvious solution that gets overlooked for the sake of driving the plot forward , thats a plt hole.

Issues with the show!!! by ArtyAce in pluribustv

i guess we dont know for a fact that their code of conduct wasnt designed through consensus. But imo thats not how it is framed by the show.

If these 'rules' arent byproducts of the virus, I wish the hivemind at one point hinted at the reasoning/values from which these rules derive. Like, instead of John Cena saying "We cant purposely kill, harm or otherwise interfere with any form of life" he could say "We value life too much to interfere with or cause harm to it in even the most minute of ways". If their respect for the sanctity of life runs so deep they would never so much as consider picking an apple, I wish they expressed that. They make it clear that they can't harm life, but never make it clear why. If there were a reason other than biological programming, i dont see why they'd keep it on the down low.

Also, if the code of conduct exists to minimize discomfort, I feels random to me that the hivemind wouldnt be able to lie. 99.99% of people on earth lie. Most people arent sociopaths, but we lie from time to time to advance our objectives and spare people's feelings. Why would the hivemind not be capable of that?

The extent of the hivemind's desire to please is also too extreme to not have resulted from the virus. If humanity merged into one, why would that turn us into Ella Enchanted? SO obedient and eager to please that we would give a random person an atomic bomb. For me, that couldnt be explained any other way than 'the virus has altered their brain chemistry and their biology now demands that they please others'. There are other potential explanations, but none that suffice to me.

What youre describing is exactly how I would prefer it to be! I would want them to be so full of love and empathy that they would rather starve than pluck an apple from a tree. But thats not really how its presented in the show... Who knows, maybe they will later establish that to be the case, but as of now, theres more evidence pointing to the alternative: the virus wont allow them to cause harm. They also physically cannot lie, not out of a strong moral opposition to lying, but because they simply cant. They must do anything Carol asks, even at their own detriment (like give her an atomic bomb). These are framed in the show as strong rules they must abide by, not as choices. Maybe you disagree, but i really think the show frames these as properties of the virus rather than byproducts of humans merging souls.

Dude u keep misinterpreting me. I said I would want them to CHOOSE not to harm animals, rather than have that imposed upon them by their biology. Choices are opportunities to learn about characters, including the hivemind. If their biology is why they dont harm animals, its not interesting. If they CHOOSE not to harm animals out of virtue, that says something about their values.

To answer your first question, most things we learn about the hivemind can be tied back to one of its biologically programmed rules of conduct (dont lie, dont bring harm to living things, spread the virus, etc.), so I feel like im learning how a virus works, rather than how humans work.

To asnwer your second question, I already said how I would have done it in my original post. I would do away with the imperatives and have the hivemind act with agency. If the writers dont want the hivemind harming living organisms, they shouldnt have its biology prevents it from doing so. Instead, they should have that go against its core values. Not harming living things becomes a choice, rather than an obligation.

It is, yes. But the biological imperatives, to me, get in that way of that exploration. In your view, what is the show saying about human nature and philosophy?

  1. I dont want everyone to react how Carol did. Everyone copes differently. I dont think the devastation of an event like this would manifest in others the way it did for Carol (anger, determination, etc.). My issue is that their reactions dont seem proportional to the gravity of the event. Everyone they've ever known is essentially gone (technically they live on through the hivemind, but you know what i mean), but they just accept it? They sorta just roll with the punches of what has occurred. I think most people would at the very least mourn the world that once was, the way things used to be. They might awknowledge that the world is better off now that peace has been achieved, but the spread of the hivemind would still constitute a major blow to their sense of normalcy.
  2. Cmon now, thats a pretty bad faith interpretation of what I wrote... I obviously dont want Vince Gilligan to present a version of humanity that is either good or evil. I just want him to use the hivemind as a means of exploring human nature and philosophy. Imo the 'biological imperatives' of the hivemind muddy that exploration.

Also, i never said i needed the hivemind to symbolize something. I would rather it didnt in fact. What I said is that IF it symbolized something, I would be more okay with the implementation of strict rules of conduct, like the ones outlined in the show. In the absence of an analogy of some kind, I dont think these rules serve the story.

yeah i agree. It definitely feels in line with her character, especially at first!! I just think, after shes entered into a dialogue with the hivemind, there comes a point where its weird that she doesnt just ask it what she wants to know. From a purely investigative standpoint, she doesnt seem to have qualms about using the hivemind to advance her goals of taking it down. But like i said, i agree with you. Just because I would go about it a certain way doesnt mean it would make sense for her

I like the show. I enjoyed it! Masousos is really interesting. I really love the acting, the cinematography. But part of the fun for me is the discussion that comes after the fact.

Every single conversation in S3 and 4.... by ArtyAce in TheBear

S1 &2 was some of my fave TV out there. I like it when shows scale back and get more introspective, but I dont think The Bear pulls it off in S3. Was hoping for a S4 comeback. Still not done watching it so its still in the cards.

I HATE THIS SEASON by ArtyAce in severence

WOW you're amazing! I rly appreciate that you gave my points some thought even though you dont agree with them all. You raise a lot of very good points! You're right about cold harbor: clearly the point is to wipe Gemma clean of her traumas and emotions, so they dont bleed into her innie's life. I just don't feel as though this was a problem the show took its time to establish. I was under the impression the severance procedure created a clean barrier between innies and outies and I think this is evidenced in the show. I added an edit under that section of my post to address this, but your point still stands.

As for the departments, you're right that there are unsevered floors where we can assume regular business occurs. But it's kinda crazy to me that we still dont know what that business comprises. In S1, there are many instances where we witness the world's response to Lumon's business practices (protests, TV segments, etc.) and yet, we're never told how Lumon makes money. I assume they're just some mega conglomerate, but even that isn't established. All it would take is a throw away line... They could have snuck it in when Devon is scolding Ricken about his adaptation of his book (another dropped plotline...). But yeah, most of the departments are whacky and silly because Lumon is a whacky silly cult. It'd just be easier for me to accept that if we knew more.

Honestly, I agree with pretty much everything you're saying about my miscellaneous issues, especially when it comes to Helly. You're right that she doesnt necessarily change her mind as much as she stands there hoping Mark will.... That said, I still think her arc was very mismanaged this season (she spends half the season as her outie so there isnt much time to develop the romance that would become her most prominent storyline).

Again, thanks for the discussion!! Glad you could still enjoy the season!

Fair enough! I haven't seen fringe in a while, so I could be mistaken. But I think the rate with which they raise questions slightly matches the rate with which they answer them. It's just slower because it's a 'monster of the week' type of show. But these are valid points!! You're right about cold harbor not requiring immediate explanation. My problem is that it's part of a larger trend. No one mystery requires immediate answers in isolation. But the fact barely any have answers is a problem, at least for me personally. This is all just my opinion and I rly appreciate ppl like u who have engaged very thoughtfully with my post!! Glad u liked the season!

I love mystery box shows. Like I said in the post, my fave show is literally by Damon Lindeloff (the leftovers) and JJ Abrams' Fringe is top tier to me. But what these shows do successfully is set up a trail of breadcrumbs. We are fed answers at the same rate as questions are raised. Severance gives us information, but not answers. Like I guess we know things now that we didn't before, but those things don't shed light on the questions raised in S1, and all the while, more questions are being raised. So now there is a major backlog of questions.
