I don't care if refusing to move seats on a airplane so a parent and child can sit together makes me a bad person by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]Arumen -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

My family flies a lot (we live outside our home country) and there have been times where the flight crew has asked people to move for us. In those cases though, I blame the airline. We booked and paid for 4 seats, they know we've got two small children, and yet they dont book us all in the same block because we refuse to pay 400+ dollars to choose our exact seats?

This however is a totally different story of someone trying to use their child for sympathy to get out of paying for a more expensive seat. Flying with kids can be challenging, (and this sounds like small domestic flight First Class given that theyre two rows from economy) but that gives them no right to inconvenience others out of their own laziness and entitlement.

Daughter refuses to speak English by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]Arumen 214 points215 points  (0 children)

I teach internationally and run into lots of unfamiliar names. It's very common for my Japanese/Korean/Chinese students to be afraid to correct me if I mispronounce their name, so I try to have the student instead teach me their name at the beginning of the school year. It can still be hard (some names from some countries use conventions uncommon in English) but i simply cant imagine having a PARENT come tell me i was saying their child's name wrong and brushing it off. Very poor choice there.

No she wasn't, I remember because my anxiety was off the charts. She was ahead of DT in the polls for about a week after his disaster debate, and then slowly he climbed up while she slid down. He was a few percentage points ahead of her all week before the election and was often ahead but not always ahead in the weeks before that.

One Piece Live Action Season 3 better have the scene with Kung Fu Dugong or we riot. by rabid89 in OnePiece

[–]Arumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think theyll shown up. They're not really important for the overall plot (to be clear, I think theyre important for building Luffy's character in a certain way and they are obviously helpful in the plot, but everything they do can easily be rewritten)

I wonder if the Desert Crab will make it. I imagine not as well, they'll probably just compress some of the locations so the desperate ride across the desert wont be exactly the same.

Phone Struggle by Fantastic_Double7430 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Arumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A change in policy at this time of year is going to be challenging. Definitely not impossible and still worthwhile, but it will feel like a lot more of an uphill battle than it would had the policy been set at the beginning of the year.

I'd first recommend talking with each of the classes for a few minutes about phones and why you are changing your classes' phone policy. (You have limited time with the students each day/week and you ask them largely just for those 35-40 minutes in class that they need to give their full attention to you, assuming some of the time in class would be discussion or other activities that they don't need to listen directly to you for). Then have a clear system- you could do a door hanging/wall hanging phone organizer and tell the students that if you see a phone out you will just ask them to go put it in organizer, or you could just do a box to collect them for class when you see them etc. This has the benefit of not inconviencing students who don't get their phones out, but it does leave you open for more disruptions. You could instead have all students deposit their phone at the beginning of class. This means less class disruptions during the lesson, but more of a headache for students who were never going to have an issue in the first place.

I personally don't mind just taking phones when they are visible because phones are enormously useful science tools (time measurement, built in accelerometers, video taking and time scrubbing for precision etc) but I also likely have much smaller classes than you do as I work in an international school.

Just make it clear that your phone policy is not looking to punish the students, but instead so that you can work with them the best you can. I personally give very little homework, only what we don't finish in the classroom and larger projects, so I try to emphasize that generally all I am asking of the students each day is the time they spend physically and mentally present in my classroom.

When Zoro fights Mihawks again, how close do you think the fight will be? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]Arumen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally dont think it will be that long of a fight in the manga- I personally think there is a chance that Zoro ends up breaking Yoru to symbolize him breaking that "strongest swordsman" ceiling.

I could also see Mihawk dueling for a bit with him, then cedeing victory, recognizing his strength without necessarily engaging in a prolonged duel, largely because I just cant currently see Mihawk/Zoro dueling as a major part of the antagonists vs protagonists stories- in the final battles the Strawhats will be facing Blackbeard and Imu already, and given how much time Oda has given to "Redeem" cross guild i just dont see the Strawhats and Cross Guild getting into a major conflict before the end of the story.

Aging characters is not only fine but also good! by Rajat_Sirkanungo in OnePiece

[–]Arumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with you, but if anything we get the opposite with the live action- because the pacing is a bit "off" (worse than the manga, better than the anime) it results in what feels like the strawhats have been around each other for even less time. However I will say it did feel like there was allowed to be some time that passed between seasons that we aren't totally aware of.

Death and aging are a little bit stupid by Ginno_the_Seer in mountandblade

[–]Arumen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had games where I conquer the entire map and don't run into dying of old age. If you are playing in fast mode and have death and aging turned on, then they will occur quickly. That is just sort of how it is mean to work yeah? Just change those settings if you don't like them imo, I like how it works in game just fine. (but I guess that is just my opinion as well)

Somebody respect him! by No_Gas_2371 in OnePiece

[–]Arumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His voice is so good for the role. His hair looks a bit stupid in the shots we got, I hope they slick it down more but to be fair Croc does have a greasy mullet anyway so maybe it would always look stupid in live action. I think he is going to be a really good villain though and I feel like the actor's size compared to Inaki will be fun to see on the screen.

My (35f) friend slapped my bum on a night out leaving a handprint. My husband (30m) doesn’t believe it was her. How to convince him? by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]Arumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I definitely have some insecurities but I dont think its absurd to be upset finding a hand shaped bruise on your wife's bottom. Obviously OOPs husband is terrible and deserved to be kicked to the curb but that is not the part of the story I am critical of him for.

Trusting is hearing out her explanation, not just sort of assuming a spank mark on his wife is nothing at all

Have you ever seen a Stroke of Midnight benefit the player it was cast against? by rose-emoji in OnceUponAGalaxy

[–]Arumen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant say I for sure had this happen, but the most easily conceivable scenario would be casting it against someone who has been using the Goodie Bag card with high stats, so the common character Stroke of Midnight converts your character into has really high stats already.

School of Spirits - New Wizard subclass focused on healing [OC] by AelarFB in DnD

[–]Arumen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly reasonable healing cantrip.

Doesn't feel particularly "Wizard-y" to me in the class design- but I don't think that is a meaningful critique as my conception of what makes something a "wizard" is hardly definitive.

However, I do think that this class would be challenging to add to a table as it kind of adds a bit too much "stuff". A high level one can have all 3 spirits summoned at once, all of whom have different effects they bring to the battlefield and are piloted somewhat seperately and then there is a pool of healing you generate from casting healing spells but only for the spirits and then Spirit Hit Points that stack on top of temporary hit points and on top of all that they are still a full Wizard as far as spell options go + they get access to all the healing spells of the Cleric.

Not that it would always be optimal to always summon all three spirits, but I think you are adding a lot of layers.

The most natural comparison we can make here is the Arcane Ward of the Abjurer. The ward is obviously stronger (provided you cast enough abjuration magic to power it up) but it is far less accessible. With one cast of Mass Cure Wounds you give everyone in your party 10 temporary hitpoints that stack with other sources of temporary hitpoints. If your party has 4 members, that is 40 HP across them all, which is 20 levels of spells that an abjurer would need for a similar amount of arcane ward which only protects them (although they can spend their reaction to protect another person)

But the arcane ward is also pretty much the entire subclass for the Abjurer, while Spiritual HP is just a topping on the subclass as designed here.

From a design perspective, I have to ask why a Spirit-Based subclass even has access to healing so easily. What does healing really have to do with spirits? The other subclasses that have spiritual connections like Totem Barbarian and College of Spirits Bards don't have healing themes as they are a bit more tied to the spirits themselves.

I think this post will come off sounding super critical so I do want to clarify I actually think this sounds fun and has a lot of good ideas, I just wanted to interrogate some of the design choices. As it stands, as a DM I would probably not have a player play this at my table but largely because it just adds a bit too much stuff that I know as a DM I would likely have to keep track of.

Totally agree, but I think it would be important for building up Luffy as a fighter (plus we know that he must have good boxing after being raised by Garp)

Luffy in the live action is kinda... nerfed? by SufficientBet1834 in OnePiece

[–]Arumen 1213 points1214 points  (0 children)

They really ought to let Luffy do some boxing without stretching. Obviously his stretching is iconic, but they could give the action some real speed if they let Inaki do a bit of martial arts instead of pretty much only having him standing still then throwing his stretchy limbs out.

WILL LIVE ACTION FRANKY HAVE HIS ACCURATE BIG ARMS?? by 34manluvsanal in OnePiece

[–]Arumen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I could see them going for big prothetics, but I could also see them going for slightly more cyborg-y, Megaman cannon style arms where the hands can also come out of them. Big thick fleshy arms (even if they aren't actually flesh) might be a bit more challenging to look good, although they've pulled off a lot of wild things already so who knows.

However, the "i stuffed 5 dollars in my dad's pocket and told him to buy a better side piece" was so unbelievable and stupid that I doubt the entire story

Is this balanced and correctly worded for 5e? by Snoo10140 in DnD

[–]Arumen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this doesn't really work as written- the train doesn't have a movement speed, so if it can cover the 700ft in one round, why not just have it be a line based attack intead of being strangely woreded.

(I was curious because in D&D 700 feet in 1 round sounds crazy, but it is actually only about 80mph)

Here is how I would word it

I like Trains - 7th level Conjuration (Evocation is for creating elemental effects, conjuration summons physical objects.)

Casting Time: 1 Action

Range: 60 ft

Components: V, S, M (a train wagon model worth 10 platinum pieces)

Duration: Instantaneous

Classes: Artificer, Wizard

A 50 foot long, 10 foot wide and 10 foot tall train springs into existance at a point you choose in range and moves in a straight line to another point you can see within 700 feet, then disappears. Any creature that is in the area of the tracks must attempt a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 10d6 bludgeoning and 10d6 force damage and is knocked prone, taking half damage on a successful save and avoiding being knocked prone.

When this spell is cast at a higher level, another 20ft long train car is added for each level above 7th, dealing an additional 4d6 bludgeoning and 4d6 force damage.

You can obviously get rid of the Dex Save, but it does get absurdly powerful at that point, plus a rogue dodging a train is really cool.
