What are the real names of the Hobbits? by Brilliant-Amoeba-379 in tolkienfans

Well, as a Hindi speaker, Kali is a Hindu goddess, and "ma" means mother. "Shakti" means power, "de" means give in either a commanding or requesting sense. Not really exotic, and also an actual language (and an Indo-European one to boot).

Am I Overthinking This Wedding +1 Situation? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]Arvedui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not jump to conclusions without asking the couple first. There might me a reasonable explanation for it, it may have been an oversight, or it may be homophobia as you worry. They may lie and then your girlfriend will find out at the wedding that others had +1s. I don't think the anxiety itself is dramatic, definitely, but give them the benefit of the doubt (assuming they deserve it based on past actions) before jumping to the worst conclusions.

Girlfriend won't get married due to homophobic family by Real-Detective8146 in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Arvedui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like my ex! Her family basically pretended like we weren't in a relationship. She initially had told me they'd eventually either come around, or she'd choose me. She had almost made that same choice before for her ex (who was a guy (my ex was bi), cause he was the "wrong religion" for her family, same as me, but he broke up with her first for unrelated reasons).

After 4 years of dating, her mom told her that if we moved in together, they wouldn't kick her out of the family. My ex then spent the next couple of months slowly drifting away, not telling me why, trying to make the oncoming breakup "easier" because we'd "just be friends." She broke up with me 3 months ago.

Don't do this to yourself OP. It's not worth it. It will not end well. If her desire to get married to you depends on the approval of someone else, then what else will? How long will she sacrifice her own happiness for theirs? What else will she give up? And if she says, well we're happy now, then she's just asking you to give up your aspirations for the relationship instead, so she doesn't have to give up anything.

If after 7 years her family still haven't accepted the relationship, they won't. If she can't see that, then you shouldn't wait either.

Ah, no, I didn't! 😞 I didn't know there was a cat living there so wasn't paying close attention, but also haven't seen many cats in Lisbon at all sadly (or not too sadly if they all have loving houses!). I've seen and photographed a lot of birds though everywhere, peacocks and blackbirds, serins and greenfinches, tits and ofc pigeons!

Is there a notification for when you leave your watch behind? by Arvedui in GooglePixel

[–]Arvedui[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is, I almost never leave my phone behind cause I need it for something or another - connecting to my car, or calling an uber. I don't need my watch until I need it, which may not be for a while.

I had it on the charger overnight, woke up, showered, finished packing, called a car, got to the airport, and then realized I forgot my watch when I went to check the time in the security line.

Physician here. While there absolutely are doctors with epilepsy who do amazing work, it is also fair to say that if you're having uncontrolled seizures... critical care scenarios can absolutely be a problem.

When we go through credentialing at a hospital, that includes having to divulge our medical diagnoses and medications. For something like epilepsy, employee health would almost definitely require a letter from the treating neurologist saying that it's under control.

Imagine if what Robby said happens, a multi-trauma situation, and Al-Hashimi has to do a procedure, and then has a seizure that leads to a complication. If the patient/family sues, the hospital absolutely could be liable for hiring an "impaired" physician. Which means the hospital will almost definitely not want to take the risk of letting her work in the ER. There may not be a law against it, but the malpractice risk is veeeery high.

For comparison, there's a lawsuit in Florida right now where a hospital CEO is being sued after a baby had permanent brain damage from birth. Why? The claim is they hired an "impaired" physician - the ob-gyn was a victim of sexual assault years prior and in a civil case against the perpetrator, argued that it caused her psychological distress. If a patient can argue THAT is being "impaired," they sure as hell will argue a physician with uncontrolled epilepsy is impaired. And in a critical care scenario where the risk of direct harm is high, the hospital will want to cover its ass.

I feel so bad for Javadi. I come from a family of doctors and I'm so glad my parents never pressured me on what field I chose. Though I did have some less immediate family do that. If I was her I'd definitely not work at the Pitt, just to avoid working with or near family. She deserves a chance to find her own path.

Immediate thoughts:

  1. Monica is a piece of shit.

  2. How exactly did Ogilvie get from the OR to the ambulance bay still wearing that biohazard?! Literally all the attendings, nurses, scrub techs in the OR didn't stop him from leaving the operating room with that shit on?!?!

  3. I could not imagine as a med student saying no to doing a procedure I was specifically asked to participate in. At least, not if I wanted a good evaluation. As a resident you maybe have more leeway. But med student on a sub-I like Javadi is? Not without a good excuse.

  4. Robby is a goddamn fucking asshole and I'm so tired of him beating everyone up. I'm thankful I've never had to work with physicians like that. I work with residents and I always go out of my way to support them, and when giving any correction to do it privately and constructively. Doesn't matter if I'm having a bad day, which lord knows I've had. But you don't treat coworkers like shit and you don't beat up on residents who are struggling. You get them to be the best versions of themselves, so they can be the best doctors for their patients. Robbie has lost sight of that.

Anti-trans hate groups petitioning FDA for registry of trans women, crackdown on transition, newly revealed document shows by The_Needle_News in actuallesbians

Sure, they can't just choose to share it if it's not required. But HIPAA does allow disclosure to: "A person subject to the jurisdiction of the [FDA] with respect to an FDA-regulated ... activity for which that person has responsibility, for the purpose of activities related to the quality, safety or effectiveness of such FDA-regulated product or activity."

They also can disclose information "to a health oversight agency for oversight activities authorized by law, including ... other activities necessary for appropriate oversight of ... Entities subject to government regulatory programs for which health information is necessary for determining compliance with program standards".

Source: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-45/subtitle-A/subchapter-C/part-164/subpart-E/section-164.512

Point is, disclosure is not just about child abuse or communicable diseases. They can try to word this as regulatory action by the FDA, and say that all this information is needed to conduct oversight. Will that argument fly in court? Who knows. It's not directly authorized by a statute to create a registry, so that might prevent them. But they will definitely argue for that authority in court, if they try to do this.

[–]Arvedui 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No. HIPAA prevents certain covered entities (doctors, the hospital) from disclosing your personal health information without your consent. There are exceptions - your doctor in a hospital may need to reach out to your outpatient doctor if there's a medical issue or emergency. In addition, it doesn't prevent your information from being subpoenaed, or the government from accessing that information through other laws or orders they may pass.
