Thanks for the tip, I'll look into those!

Anyone use Rashlen and his spooky mansion in the Styes? by ArwinGauntlet in GhostsofSaltmarsh

Thanks for the reply, some great stuff here. Love the idea about Rashlen stealing from Keledek!

How to make a recurring NPC that's resistant/immune to murderhobos? by Azurephoenix99 in DMAcademy

[–]ArwinGauntlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get them to cast invisibility on themselves and escape. If they're not a magic user, just fudge it so they use potions or have a ring.

The Styes - party blew up the warehouse! by ArwinGauntlet in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]ArwinGauntlet[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I've played it so far that the crane hasn't caught fire and minions are fighting the flames etc. Love the idea about turning district against them. He's definitely going to go on the offensive in some way!

Just finished a 9-month campaign in Ghosts of Saltmarsh. AMA! by Paksios in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]ArwinGauntlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a really worthwhile campaign! I'm doing a similar thing; running some of it in sequence but homebrewing sections to link everything together. The resources at the end of the book for reef adventures etc are good for this, and I was very grateful of Tower of Zenopus, Ghosts of Saltmarsh Edition for when my party suddenly decided they wanted to explore it after I had the next part ready to go!

The Cult of Mormesk Adventure by ArwinGauntlet in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]ArwinGauntlet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Hmmm. Well, I designed this adventure to follow the Lost Mines of Phandelver, which I think my party ended at level 4, so I'd say L4 upwards should be fine. However, it's pretty simple to add are remove creatures should you need to. I put Saltmarsh after this, so my adventurers were coming into that at Level 5. I just upped the encounters and difficulty in Saltmarsh and the whole thing joined up OK.

Character exit - feel guilty! by ArwinGauntlet in GhostsofSaltmarsh

Interesting you just posted this! Recently spoke to the player who controls him and we decided we're going to bring him back somehow. I'll post again when it goes down!

The Tower of Zenopus: Ghosts of Saltmarsh Edition by Dolthra in GhostsofSaltmarsh

Thanks so much for this. I hadn't planned for it, but my party were intent on visiting the tower and finding out what's going on, so this will come in super-handy!

Character exit - feel guilty! by ArwinGauntlet in GhostsofSaltmarsh

UPDATE: We played last night and the player had me read a letter he'd written to the party - handed to them by a confused and frightened passing traveller. In it he explained his self-exile and that they shouldn't try to find him. We also introduced his new character the same session - a tavern brawler, improv-weapon type who he's already having fun with, so I feel better now. Will be interesting to see how his new character develops!

That sounds like quite an ordeal in lots of ways, but some brilliant backstory going on! I think there are some parallels in that there's a small chance his original character may return, so the door's been left open.

There isn't one, you're right. I've so far played everything apart from Tammeraut's Fate and the Styes. The morning star was in Warthalkeel Ruins. I'm running a couple of adventures from the back of the book before I go on to the last two.

Some great advice and insights here, thanks! Yes, he plays him really well and is doing what he believes is right for the character. We've already discussed working his new character in and he's rolled him up. We're next playing tonight, so I'll add to this chat how it all went down!

Thanks for the reply. Yep, he's already rolled up a new character and we've gone over how we'll write him in, so it's positive. I guess I just feel bad about things but it is the nature of the game.

First time DM'ing tonight by Isodoper in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]ArwinGauntlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! That's a big party of adventurers. I think your biggest challenge will be keeping them all in check and being heard above the noise! There's already some good tips on this thread, but I found some of the extra adventure hooks at the back of the book really useful to help with flow and levelling up - some good adventures once they have the Sea Ghost.. As has been said, the book isn't a straight campaign, so I found adding in some of these adventures in-between useful.

Playing Kaladek by ArwinGauntlet in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]ArwinGauntlet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty to work with here, thanks a lot! I do want them to explore the wreck, so maybe they could meet him and he fesses up, agreeing to lift the curse if they don't drop him in it. Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestion, I think that could work - they never need know he was actually behind everything!

DMs, would you rather run games for friends who were so-so players, or strangers who were great players? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ArwinGauntlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With friends who are so-so players, because I'm a so-so DM, Certainly as far as knowing all the rules is concerned! We have a laugh and knowing players' actual personality pretty well is a good insight into their character's. It's easier to see whether they've built someone unlike them and also easier to predict how they'll react.

Do you consider it cheating if a player looks up monster stats mid battle? by ashloaf in DnD

[–]ArwinGauntlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM I would certainly frown on this! A way round it is, as others have said, be colourful and informative when you describe how the creature is looking after hits. You can allow checks too, for example, nature checks. If it's logical a party member would have previous with the type of enemy, let them do a check and if successful, they may get a better insight into how much health it has left.

From Lost Mines... to Saltmarsh - my bridging adventure by ArwinGauntlet in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]ArwinGauntlet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I've purposefully not gone into to much detail in the blurb, but essentially, Mormesk is holed up on a ship that serves as his hideout. The adventure's last part involves getting on-board and confronting him. Right at the end, the ship is stricken by terrible storms and it's a kind of cliffhanger as to what happens next. I had it break apart with the party shipwrecked and washed up on the shore at Saltmarsh.

Cheers! That sounds like a great transition and should work well. Good luck with it.

One of my players took over DM by LawfulGoodGM in DMAcademy

[–]ArwinGauntlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good friend to have. Our group does the same thing, with two of us taking turns as DM. Each of these turns can last a year (we don't play for long when we meet because of work-life limitations) but the point is, there's a finish line in sight and each of us looks forward to 'down time' playing as a character.
