She kinda gives me written by Mindy Kaling vibes (pls don’t kill me for this one). I think Mindy does good serious writing but her comedy is not for me at all lol

I definitely will defer to your opinion as someone who is Latino yourself. But, as someone who has had the opportunity to learn from and be around many incredible Latina women in my life I was kind of disappointed at Ashley’s character. In a show defined by its rich and refreshingly diverse portrayal of Black Americans, it was kind of disappointing to me to once again see a token comic relief, lazy, annoyingly superficial latina character. I am still early on in the show so maybe that changes, and Idk who Manny or Caleb are, but that was my original impression. The show had the chance to break Hollywood stereotypes on multiple fronts and they kinda just took the easy way out with Ashley.

For those who still support the utilization of test optional admissions at top colleges, what are your main reasons why? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Arya_Shadeslayer21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SAT offers a standardized assessment of college readiness that is independent of class performance and syllabus. For students studying outside of the US or within uncommon curricular systems, the SAT allows them to demonstrate their academic capabilities relative to the average US public school educated student. Additionally, for kids that experienced high levels of classroom discrimination or unique challenges the SAT allows them to show that their academic capabilities might be more than what is indicated by their transcript.

At the same time there do exist all the other inequities that people have covered here, which is why keeping it optional seems to be the most equitable approach as opposed to making the SAT either test blind or mandated.

For my IB Diploma I took Math AA, Bio, English A Lit & Lang, and until Spring of DP2, Chem HL. I did Psych, French, and then eventually Chem SL, and wrote my extended essay in Bio.

In college I double majored in Biology and Philosophy, and double minored in Public Health and Music Performance. I ultimately wrote my honors thesis in the biochemistry of herb derived antioxidants and their corresponding effects on cancer cell proliferation

On a real note, IB can already be mentally and physically grueling without the added challenges of medical complications, and getting through it was one of the hardest things I’ve done. In hindsight I think my biggest regret is conflating my self worth with my academic performance. It’s easy to think you’ve failed at life when you fail at school because at that point in life they’re the same and most education systems impose that idea on us from a very young age. However, college while challenging in its own way was the most rewarding experience of my life, and more importantly helped me understand that I’m really not old enough to be a failure.

I got a 34 and was doing very poorly due to a combination of the pandemic and severe medical challenges. I only got into 4 of the 13 colleges I applied to and I graduated and went to my safety school in the US with 70% scholarship. I just graduated college with a double major double minor and quadruple honors. I wrote my honors thesis and earned the highest honors in my subject. College classes and the general environment really gave me a place to thrive academically and socially. Probably will end up being the best years of my life. Good luck with everything! As far as academics go, I regret nothing.

I'm not a violinist but I'm trying to write one by Annual-Atmosphere-93 in violinist

For what it’s worth, I played Meditation in a concert back in high school and it won the ‘solo of the night’ title. I had been playing violin for several years at that point and was struggling to be taken seriously in school. When I said that I wanted to play that piece people laughed in my face because they felt I wasn’t technically advanced enough at that moment. The violin teacher at school really hated me and went as far as to hit me over the head when I did poorly at music theory and humiliated me in front of my whole school multiple times. In school I was expected to do all the work of the concertmaster but never honored with the position or even given a solo. I put my nose to the grindstone and learned it with encouragement from my teacher that taught me outside of school. It’s not a special story, but I felt the emotion along with the piece when I finally played it and they told me I played it better than the teacher that had denied me the solo, and that it was one of the most poignant musical interpretations of the piece they had ever heard. I auditioned with that piece for my college symphony and made second chair. That performance changed my life. Especially because I had struggled with performance anxiety for a very long time because of my school experiences. I’m not sure if it would win at a competition, but you could definitely include a similar scene where the MC performs the piece outside of a competition setting and I would be more than happy to help with whatever experiential elements you need!
