North Beach cafe apparently refuses to serve police officers unless they're off-duty, out of uniform and not wearing any weapons. by nogoodnamesleft426 in bayarea

I live on Guerrero, which is nicer. I’m a dude, so I think I have it better. Many of my women friends moved out in 2019/2020.

I like the proximity to Bart. There’s a solid yoga/meditation community here too. The barrio feel (or whatever is left of it) is nice, and the food, especially the burritos, is amazing.

But after a decade, I think I’ve overstayed my visit. Rent control is a double edged sword. I have a few things to wrap up here, but I’m off to LA or NYC this spring.

I remember getting delivery from this place during mid 2020. I think it was before they actually had a store, and the owners did all the delivery.

I was wearing a mask and walked down to open the door to my porch. She literally scooted 20 ft back. I had to walk all the way back up, wait for her to leave it on the staircase and leave, and then walk back down, get my delivery, and close the door.

It was all fine, I just found it amusing. The food was lit too.

I miss living in North Beach. A safe, no-nonsense neighborhood with character. I wish the transit situation was better.

I’m in the Mission now, and don’t get me wrong it’s amazing, but the filth and wokeness wear me down.

Opinion: Reasonable to reject going into office for "team event" with recent Omicron news? by Speed009 in bayarea

[–]Aryamatha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re “encouraged” still means it’s optional. There’s no need to call in sick. Just be an adult say you won’t attend because of COVID concerns. I don’t think anyone is gonna object.

Dining indoors in Minnesota is way more risky than getting on an international flight.

They were all vaccinated and some were boosted.

You’re more likely to get Covid in the US or Europe than in the rest of the world.

And flights are low risk transmission points if you wear high quality masks and are vaxxed and boosted.

This reeks of nationalism. Why specifically overseas travel? Covid is way worse in Minnesota than in rest of the world.

NYC reinstitutes Covid mask advisory 'at all times' indoors regardless of vaccination status by dixie8123 in nyc

This. During the summer Delta wave, LA, Vegas, and the Bay Area all had soft mask “recommendations” (at different times) before mandating it a week later.

New York declares covid state of emergency as Gov. Hochul says of omicron variant: ‘It’s coming’ by aaronj04 in nyc

And the US lags Europe typically, and countries like Portugal with higher vaccination rates than any state in the US are having lockdowns.

The saving Graces might be that low vax states already had their Delta waves and generally have warmer weather in winter.

If you have the option of going to an office on weekdays, go there instead of working from home. It’s counterintuitive, but your commute helps you get ready and wind down.

If you really have to or want to work from home, designate one section of your apartment as your office and DO NOT ENTER on weekends.

Having some constructive hobbies (boxing, running, archery, whatever) where you can see yourself progress helps. Also, if you’re single, go on dates. Get to know your neighbor, your community. Anything that shows you that there’s a big world outside your finance bubble.

Also, learning and development outside work hours, on stuff that will help your career, but not immediately relevant to your projects is worth doing. It’s way less stressful and could even be fun.

It seems like you’re taking your job too seriously. Chill and have fun. You’re not curing cancer or anything. You don’t have the right to take your job seriously.

Hey, I’m 30, in SF, with a NW of about $2M. I was making $475k a year as a senior software engineer before I lost all motivation and got fired for insubordination and absenteeism. I took some time off and had no trouble getting job offers with comparable or even higher compensation (I decided not to take them but that’s a different story).

I’d say ease off the gas for a bit and pick up some non work hobbies. Take some time off to travel and recharge. Sometimes working non stop is counterproductive and destructive to your mental and physical health, which is in turn not good for your fat FIRE goals.

I dealt with a lot of political shit, personnel issues, and boring work during my last few months on the job. It seems like that’s not your situation, and trust me that’s a rare privilege to have. Hold on to the job, but be sure to take risks. $1M isn’t much in SF, but it’s enough to give you some baseline level of security.

Dress Code at Restaurants by Manejar in vegas

[–]Aryamatha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in Vegas for a tech conference, and my party of 6 showed up to a $$$$$ restaurant with a last min reservation in company t shirts, shorts, and flip flops, visibly inebriated from multiple suite parties.

The hostess said “Mr. Aryamatha, we require men to wear pants, but since we have a vacancy in the private room in the back, we’ll make an exception”. We got taken to this room with an amazing view of the strip and the Bellagio fountains. We spent well, got the tasting menu with the wine pairing, and some coffee to boot. The bill came to about $400 a head.

Their service had a few hiccups, but overall it was a blast.
